Toolstop Podcast #101 - The UK's Last Power Tool Company | Last week it was all tuxedos, kilts and prizes galore. This week we're back to basics with a good old sit-down chat with someone who is immersed in the world of power tools. CEL-UK's Chris Elsworthy is not stranger to the spotlight. Appearing in an episode of the BBC's "Dragon's Den", not to mention several editions of this very podcast, Chris is used to talking about his products, particularly the Power8 Workshop. This time, though, we chat about: Chris's approach to business in terms of designing power tools and creating new concepts and seeing these processes through to completion the fact that CEL-UK is the UK's only power tool company and Chris shares how this makes him feel how manufacturing and tooling costs in the UK force companies to take this aspect of building power tools overseas Chris hints at CEL-UK's movement into the pro market whereby he's creating power tools that will meet the needs of the professional on the jobsite we discuss what CEL-UK's niche market is Chris shares how important it is for him and CEL-UK to listen to the customers and how, by doing so, new products are created we learn that CEL-UK are expanding their 10.8v lithium-ion battery range, as seen in the Multi2 Pro we also learn how Chris and his design team work through the process of designing a brand new power tool and how they decide which power tools to design and manufacture what part of CEL-UK power tools have been designed by Chris and his team? He reveals all, especially regarding applying ingenuity to product design we have laugh about how it still surprises Chris how well his products actually work, especially the POWERblower! This, perhaps, illustrates how important it is for consumers to give positive feedback to the manufacturers! Next week we'll learn about the brand new professional-class tools (see the above image for a clue) that Chris is bringing to market, product design and where he thinks CEL-UK will be in 5 years. | 21 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

On the podcast John explains how the new charger will work, how the intelligent switch draws the power the tool needs from the battery without allowing you to damage the motor and the fact that the same handle is used across the range, thus giving you an improved ergonomic experience. Also, DeWalt are launching a new range of tool boxes, the ToughSystem. Expect to pick up your new XR tool in one of these boxes. More info coming soon from the Power Tool Spy. Toolstop Podcast #78 - DeWalt Power Tools Exposed! | On this week's podcast we sat down with John from Dewalt. He is Dewalt's UK and European training manager, and there's nothing he doesn't know about Dewalt power tools. He started work with Dewalt 14 years ago, so we asked him what, of the latest range of tools the company has produced, he's particularly impressed with. He listed: - Dewalt DE7033 Heavy Duty Short Beam Mitre Saw Leg Stand - Dewalt DE7035 Heavy Duty Work Support Stand - Saw Horse - Dewalt D26204K 8mm (1/4in) Combination Plunge & Fixed Base Router - Dewalt DCT410 inspection camera with 10.8v battery - Dewalt DCT414 10.8v thermometer John also shares one of his most embarrassing moments as a demonstrator for Dewalt, plus talks about how he's seen the technology continue to improve during his 14 years with the company. He explains the innovation Dewalt are employing in their range of hammer drills, including the manufacturing processes, the changes to gear box structure, and much more. But what would be his favourite Dewalt power tool? You'll need to listen to find out! John will be joining us again in a few weeks to talk, in-depth, about the brand XR range of lithium-ion powered tools from Dewalt. Exciting stuff! | 13 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Toolstop Podcast #77 - Buying Guide for Tile Drill Bits | On this week's podcast we combine our usual banal chat with news that we're visiting Bosch and DeWalt next week, so get your questions in for us to ask them on our Facebook Page, plus we were joined by Malcolm Kilpatrick from Bosch, and asked him to explain how users should decide which drill bit to buy that will most effectively drill into tiles. Download. This is becoming a more common problem, that of tradespeople having to drill holes into porcelain tiles. Porcelain tiles are traditionally very hard to drill into, not just because of their surface, but also because of the risk of breakages. The popularity of these tiles, not just on kitchen and bathroom walls, but nowadays more often on floors, meaning that tradespeople are faced with tricky cuts and drills into a hard, often slippery, surface. Bosch offer 3 solutions: 1. The cheapest is the Bosch multi-construction drill bit with a tungsten carbide head which forms a multi-purpose tip. The shaft is cylindrical with multiple diamond ground edges forming a steep spiral. These drill bits aren't specifically designed for porcelain, but are perfect for someone wishing to drill just a few holes to, for example, fit some bathroom fixtures. 2. Bosch diamond drill bit. This is a bit more involved as it needs to be water cooled as you drill, implying that you use a cordless drill! A cutter like this will allow you to drill 2o-30 holes. 3. Lastly we have Bosch's easyDry diamond drill bit. It's the most specialised offering from Bosch. Hard wearing, the oil filled drill bits will provide you with a high number of holes drill and is a lot less messier than the water cooled option above. The oil reservoir within the bit can be refilled, thereby extending it's life on the jobsite. See it in action in this video. The oil is released as the bit rotates in the drill. It doesn't spray all over your work piece, but it provides just the right amount of lubrication to drive the bit through the hard surface of the tile. All of these drill bits can be used in any standard, 1/2" chuck drill. As noted above, only use a cordless drill with water cooled drill bit. And don't use the hammer function on your drill; you'll be more likely to break the tile. | 12 5 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Toolstop Podcast #74 - DeWalt Have Got a Leg to Stand On | On edition 74 of the Toolstop Audio Podcast, not to be confused with our chart topping Video Podcast, Neil and Mark run through some new accessories from DeWalt, including: they've launched a new leg stand, the DE7033, which DeWalt are claiming significant improvements over the previous DE7023 leg stand new features include a paddle lock, quick release detent paddle levers, all in a new compact, shorter design (1.12m - 2.6m fully extended), while holding onto some of the convenient features from the previous model, such as its attachment system. the main selling feature seems to be the fact that the DE7033 benefits from an almost telescopic ability to package down to 1.12m overall length. This means you can easily stow it in the boot of your car. Plus, it comes with a carry handle. DeWalt have also launched a new mitre saw workstation, the DE7035. The top beam is compatible with DeWalt's DE7023 mitre saw clamps, and will support up to 1200kg in weight. The legs benefit from quick release locks. Again, it looks like it's going to be a very portable, and stowable, piece of kit. Play or download We also launch a new Facebook competition. Toolstop Podcast #73 - A Fresh Bouquet of Bosch plus ToolGuyd's Ultimate Power Tool List | Mark and Neil run through another selection of brand new power tools from the Bosch stable. Download First up we have the Bosch GRL300 HV G rotational laser that comes with a green laser for greater visibility, particularly outdoors. Then we have the Bosch GRL400 HV, no green laser this time, but a greater range when used with the receiver. Bosch GOS10.8v Li-ion Professional Inspection Camera, which would have made it onto our inspection camera case study, had it been available then! However, it wasn't, but that doesn't mean that the GOS 10.8v Li shouldn't merit your consideration, particularly when considering the price point and the features it offers. It's also part of the Bosch 10.8v lithium-ion range of tools, so if you're already packing a couple of those batteries in your kit, the naked version of the GOS10.8v Li will suit you to a tee. After that we look at Bosch's new "sabre" saws, or recip saws as we like to call them. First off the GSA 1100E and GSA1300 PCE. Bosch claim "class leading low-vibration", particularly on the GSA1300 PCE with its anti-vibration handle. Both are packing lots of power and features, including LED job likes, ergo-handles, SDS blades and a "counter-balance" feature on the GSA1300 PCE which optimises the size of the machine versus its power. Staying with saws, we move onto a very affordable jigsaw offering from Bosch GST90BE. Bosch are pitching it at tradespeople who aren't going to be using a jigsaw all day, every day, but will regularly need a jigsaw to help them get the job done. The spec is professional, as you'd expect from a Bosch blue product, including quick-change SDS blade change, variable speed trigger with the 650w motor and a 4-speed orbital action. In other news, we'd posted a challenge to the Toolstop fans on Facebook for you guys to list your ultimate power tool kit. Stuart from Toolguyd responded with his list. Roger came to visit us with a lorry load of brand new Bosch lawn and garden tools on, what turned out to be, probably the worst day weather-wise of March so far. You wouldn't believe the snow! Roger explains the awards the ergonomics on the lawnmower have received. - Mark and Roger salivate over the Bosch Rapid 2000 Impact Shredder and how it gobbles your garden cuttings up and produces a fantastic, compost ready mulch. - Roger outlines the new innovations found in the Bosch hedge cutters, and explains the criteria you'll need to establish before you buy one. Plus he explains what ABS is and why it's so essential to Bosch hedge cutters. - Roger also explains the turbine cutter and safety innovations in the Bosch AXT23 TC and 25TC shredders. - Another great innovation from Bosch Lawn and Garden can be found in their Aquatak Clic high pressure washers, including the 'click' cable and hose system, and the amazing 'torsion flex' hose. All in all we had a great time with Roger, but it was a real pity about the whether. Toolstop Podcast Edition #66 - Rambletastic | It's edition 66 of the Toolstop Power Tool Cook Book Podcast! Download it here. Neil and Mark have a bit of a ramble on this edition of the Toolstop Podcast, covering; Buying guides. Neil runs us through the content of the latest buy guide from Toolstop covering mitre saws. This is a feature that will be live on our blog very, very soon. Here's a sample: Cutting on a sliding action allows you to cut longer pieces. As with blade size, check the specs of the saws you’re looking at to see the capacities of cut they will do for you. If you plan to be cutting mainly dado, you won’t need to slide too much and the capacity needed will be less. However, if you plan to be cutting fencing posts you’ll need a bigger blade and a bigger width of cut capacity and therefore a sliding mitre saw is for you. Saws without a slide function are sometimes referred to as chop saws or cut-off saws. Stanley and Black and Decker report a killer 4th quarter Innovation in power tools, particularly with the RIDGID TC-40 turbo cordless pipe cutter Remember to subscribe to our YouTube channel! Toolstop Podcast Edition #65 - Part 2 From RIDGID in Leuven | Part 2 of our chat with the RIDGID guys in Leuven today. We were joined by Enver, Walter, Mike and John (stars of our recent YouTube video). Download. Enver is one of the product managers at Ridge Tools and was delighted to show us some of the brand new laser and measuring tools available from RIDGE. Check out the challenge we posed Mike and John on using RIDGE ratchet cutters verses their new cordless cutter. Enver points out that the RIDGE TC40 is ideal for installers and plumbers who use multi-layered pipes. We also reference the massive range of pipe cutters we demo'd in this video. John explains some of the history behind the product of the hand tool RIDGID are perhaps best known for, and most certainly launched the company, the pipe wrench. See the entire range of RIDGID pipe wrenches we stock here. Enver fleshes out our knowledge of the P-TEC 3240, including explaining why RIDGID feels this is a revolutionary piece of pipe cutting kit. We move onto the ratchetting pipe cutter and Mike explains the concept behind its design and who would benefit from having it in their toolkit. See our video. Mike also shares some of his passion for RIDGID threading and grooving machines, including the fabled, 40-year-old 300 machine. At first we thought they were Doctor Who-style fazer guns, but, as Mike explains, they're actually RIDGID SeekTech tracers, which, bizarrely enough, are favourite's of his young daughter, something Walter picks up on as being a key benefit to the tool; how easy they are to use. A huge thank you, once again, to the RIDGID team in the UK and in Belgium for their time, hospitality and expertise on our trip. In other news, keep your eyes peeled for a revolutionary breakthrough exclusive to Toolstop that'll change how you buy power tools! We've also launched a service that'll make it easier for you to choose the power tools that're right for you and your job. Rather than being faced with potentially hundreds of cordless drill/drivers, for example, we'll be able to lead you to a selection of tools that'll help you make an informed choice, especially if you're on a budget. To avail yourself of our help, email powertoolsupport@toolstop.co.uk. If you use Skype, you can call us or send us an instant message to toolstop1. Finally, Neil gives us a sneak preview of some brand new Panasonic power tools. Toolstop Podcast #64 - John Stark and Makita's New Tools | Neil is joined by Makita's John Stark to talk about the new range of Makita tools for 2011. Get each new edition of the Toolstop Power Tool Cook Book Podcast as a free download from iTunes. Click here! Makita now have 39 tools in their lithium-ion range, thanks to some new and improved offerings; BHP456 the replacement to the hugely popular BHP452 combi drill. The BHP456 promises to be a better all-round combi drill than the BHP452, which is saying something; the latter is one of our best selling products, so you guys obviously love it. Makita are reporting that the BHP456 boasts a more compact and lighter design, married to a more ergonomic grip. It's carrying 16 torque settings, plus drill, and will give you up to 22,500 blows per minute on high speed. Makita, as before, are offering their new tools in naked versions, so you're going to be able to upgrade according to your budget, keeping your existing lithium-ion batteries, simply slotting them into your brand new Makita power tools. One of the exceptions to this in the new range is the BVC350Z which is only available in a naked version. However, if you're already packing 18v Makita lithium-ion batteries you'll be able to use get full advantage of its 3 litre dust bag capacity, plus high/low air volume settings. It's worth noting that the BHP456 comes in an option that supplies 3 lithium-ion batteries with the kit. Therefore, you would be well equipped to power up the BVC350Z. The guys chat about Makita's unique 18v cordless slide compound mitre saw, the BLS713RFE. Featuring a 190mm blade that will allow you cuts of up to 300mm, 4 linear ball bearings supporting the 4 sliding poles, Makita are confident this is going to be a top seller. John explains Makita's thinking behind the brand new 10.8v lithium-ion powered circular saws HS300DZ & HS300DWE. No surprise, confined spaces factor highly! They also cover something that's unique to Makita, an 18v mitre saw. There are four in the range; LS1016L & LS1016 each with 260mm blades. Then we have the LS1216 and LS1216L, with 305mm blades. The signature features of these saws is the "deep cutting" and "exact cutting". John explains what these mean, but basically we're talking greater cutting capacities with greater stability. The guys also cover off the new range of outdoor power and gardening tools, including a blower, pressure washers and line trimmers! Next time on the podcast we'll bring you part 2 of our trip to Leuven to visit RIDGID tools where we'll meet Walter and the SeeSnakes. | 3 2 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Toolstop Podcast #63 - Report From RIDGID Tools Part 1 | This is part 1 of our full report from our visit to RIDGID. You can listen to us talk about RIDGID Tools with Mike, John and Walter from Ridge Tool Company on the podcast. Download Neil and I have travelled the globe visiting the bastions of power tool design and manufacturing with the sole purpose of bringing power tool lovers, via the magic of the interweb's tubes, the latest and best in blog posts and videos. Well, when I say "travelled the globe" that's only true if you count Milton Keynes as another country. Yes, we've been to Bosch in Denham, Makita in Milton Keynes, Draper in Southampton and now we've visited the seat of European parliamentary power, Brussels. Brussels. Home of mussels, sprouts, beer, chocolate and eurocrats. However, we didn't stay there too long. Once RIDGID's Mike was allowed through customs (which gave Neil and I enough time to sample a couple of Belgian exports - see right), we were off down the road to Leuven, European base to pipe-wrench purveyors Ridge Tool Company, better known to us as RIDGID. Right away we felt completely at home, a feeling that was helped by the fact that everyone we met spoke better English than us. And that it was peeing down with rain. Home from home. However, we checked into our hotel in the centre of Leuven, once Ridge Tool's John had manage to negotiate the narrow, cobbled streets that were choked with parked bicycles (he only went down one pedestrian precinct. Oh, and a one-way street the wrong way. Pesky roadworks...), and then embarked on a quick recce to find an eatery that would allow us to sample the finest in Leuven hospitality. We settled on a rather grand affair situated on a wonky, cobbled thoroughfare of indeterminate age (it was at least 500 years old, but that's a rough guess) and were waited on by the quintessential European waiter. Open any dictionary to the word "waiter" and you'd see a photo of this guy. He was brilliant with his slightly haughty-yet-hang-dog laissez-faire, an attitude that said "Meh, here's your table. Here's your menu. And wipe your feet." The food was exceptional, of course. As was the local beer. In fact, it's hard to know what was most impressive about Leuven. The beer, of which there was hundreds of choices (see left for one example), the food, of which all previous power tool manufacturer excursions have met their match, the scenery, of which you were spoiled for choice; the pretty European bicycle riding students or the grand, Gothic spires of the town hall, or the hand and power tools on display in Ridge Tool's Leuven base. We've enjoyed the clinical beauty of Bosch's European training headquarters. We've felt at ease in the dusty technical workrooms of Makita's training facility. We've been overawed at the scale and scope of Sealey's product range and distribution warehouses. But with RIDGID we had it all; clean, European, technical efficiency. And that was just John's new Volvo 4x4. In truth, we are very impressed with Ridge Tool Company's operation in Leuven. First of all the training facilities were top-notch. What we expect from a tool company's training operation is simple; we name a tool. You quickly get the tool. You show us how to work the tool. We get to use the tool. And this all happens in a safe, well lit and ventilated space. With RIDGID it was "check", "check" and "check". Not only did they have what seemed like every single hand and power tool in the RIDGID catalogue to hand, they even had a team of guys available to us who knew everything there ever is to know about these tools and were able to show us, in a succinct fashion, how to use them and explain who'd benefit from owning them. Seriously, you cannot ask for more when you're on one of these fact-finding trips. First up we had Enver. He's a product manager. Traditionally, we expect product managers to be a bit prissy and overly protective about the products. You know, acting as if the product in question was actually birthed by them. Toolstop Podcast #54 - Stuart from Toolguyd | This time Mark and Neil are in front of the proper studio mics, and amazingly they sound just as bad as ever. But not because of the audio quality... Download the podcast. However, they're joined briefly by Stuart Deutsch of the excellent Toolguyd blog. Stuart says the following of Toolguyd; "I launched ToolGuyd because I wanted to provide a tool "guide" that could help others user their tools better and make more informed tool-purchase decisions. My intentions were to discuss my favorite tools, how to select the proper tools for a particular job, stuff like that. The blog has evolved from then as its visibility attracted more readers and the attention of tool manufacturers. Today, DIYers and pro tool users are most interested in news about the latest and greatest tools, so we place more emphasis on newly released and upcoming tools. We do occasionally receive review samples from manufacturers to test out, and I work hard to review the tools in as comprehensive, objective and honest manner as possible. What's the point in a review that cannot be trusted? Our reasons for occasionally linking to Coptool and other tool blogs vary, but here is a good example - http://toolguyd.com/2010/09/a-sneak-peek-at-milwaukees-new-m12-multi-tool/ . Jay attended a media event and took photos of Milwaukee's new oscillating multi-tool. I felt that our readers would be interested in the photos, so a few weeks later I posted them with Jay's permission. Yesterday I directed readers to another blog that I follow, Bolty.net, because they put together a nice tutorial on wire-tapping. One more example - a few months ago Jay broke the news about Bosch's new L-Boxx configurations, and you guys posted an excellent overview of them http://toolguyd.com/2010/06/first-bosch-l-boxx-tool-case-combos-announced/." The guys also chat about the massive new consignment of Draper tools that arrived today, Toolstop's new check-out system, and the football. Also, look out for a blog and video about Metabo's brilliant BS18 LTX Quick Li PowerExtreme drill/driver. Have a great weekend from everyone at Toolstop! | 19 11 10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Toolstop Podcast #47 - Old Versus New | As mentioned here, we found a 'vintage' Black and Decker rotary hammer drill. This inspired us to talk about the differences between tools like this (from the early 1980s), including the materials they're made out of, safety features that are built in, including the likes of 'anti-vibration' control, something not present on similar spec of tools back then. [podcast]http://traffic.libsyn.com/tartanpodcast/Toolstop47.mp3[/podcast] Download the podcast. However, what was surprising, as we note on the podcast, is the different - if any - in terms of power output. Toolstop Podcast #46 - Bosch for Pros and DIYers | Mark and Neil chat about the videos of Tite-Fix's products, Screw-Tite and Tongue-Tite, check them out. On this week's podcast, we focus on using Bosch power tools, both for professionals and for keen amateurs, plus Neil updates on a trip he's making later this month to Bosch's launch event where they'll unveil their brand new tools. Download the podcast. Spending your hard earned cash on new Bosch power tools isn't something you're going to enter into lightly, so for professionals Bosch is giving you the chance to become part of their pro-product testing team. You get the chance to try the tools and then give Bosch your honest feedback. Click here to read reviews and to contact Bosch to get involved. Keen DIYers may wonder how they can get the most out of their power tools. Oftentimes we have a few jobs around the house that we know we'll be able to use our tools on. But in order to justify dropping a bit of extra cash on a Bosch power tool, such as their 'green' range, we'll probably want to make sure we've got enough jobs to justify the expense. Bosch have come to the rescue with a great DIY website that gives you some great projects to use your power tools on. Check it out, it's called "House of Bosch". Be sure to let us know what questions you'd like us to ask the DeWalt training team when we visit them next month, either here on the blog, Twitter or Facebook. | 16 9 10 | Free | View In iTunes |
