But rather that moment where you see a tool in action and you mutter, "Ah-hah!". We'll, the Bosch GAM220MF is one such tool. We knew that as soon as we'd uploaded the video of it being demonstrated at the Bosch training HQ it would be a hit. We knew you guys would just get it. Bosch don't reveal much about their tools via the product numbers they give them. So, for those who don't know, the GAM 220 MF is a digital angle measurer and mitre finder. How useful could this be for you on the job site? Where do we get the idea that it's an "ah hah" product? Watch our video for some clues. Right off the bat the biggest advantage on the job site when using the GAM220 MF is saving time, particularly taking all of the arithmetic out of calculating angles. Admittedly tools like this would once have been the staple of the guys and gals in the roofing industry, but, truth be told, there are more and more uses for it on your job site, particularly if you're in carpentry, masonry or general construction. So, for example, calculating the angle for a skirting board in an internal corner where the walls are less than even, the GAM 220MF will work it out for you. Place the GAM220MF into the corner, extend the arms as far as they'll go, hold down the big red button and the device will display the angle you need to set your mitre saw to. How simple is that? No more head scratching while you clutch a pencil and piece of paper, trying to do the head maths as you figure out the correct angle to cut. What if, though, your cut is a bit more complicated than that, for example if you're working on coving or cornicing? Well, this is within the capabilities of the Bosch GAM 220 MF. In fact, it's been designed for such challenges, handling internal and external corners, even when you're working with the device above head height. Not only will it display the angle to mitre, but also the degree to bevel. Within a few seconds your saw will be set up for the cut, no messing around. And the cut will be absolutely perfect for the corner. When we spoke to Bosch's Carl during our recent trip to their UK HQ, he told us that tradespeople he'd sold the GAM220MF to had gone on to tell him that the device had paid for itself in a few short months, thanks to the amount of time being saved on jobs. And that's what, in our opinion, makes a tool ubiquitous: if it saves you time, it saves you money. And if it saves you money, you probably need to have it in your kit. | 21 | VideoBRAND NEW - Bosch GOP 250CE Professional | It's been described as a tradesperson's get out of jail free card, a power tool that is so multipurpose as to be completely ubiquitous. Those who have a GOP in their kit wonder what they ever did without it. And those who don't have one in their kit need to read this blog post. The GOP's been around for a while now, and it seems that the longer it's in the market, the number of applications you can use it for grows and grows. In some ways it reminds me of Apple's iPad. At first you think, "ok, decent looking device. But what would I use it for?". And then you visit the App Store and suddenly you see that vast array of applications you can put the iPad to. It's a bit like that with the Bosch GOP 250 CE. However, rather than buying 'apps', you buy cutters and blades. And via them (buying guide coming later this week), you get to discover how versatile the GOP actually is. When Bosch first launched the GOP as their offering to the multi-cutter market place it was available as a lithium-ion powered version only. Now, however, they've added a power cord. Suddenly, via the GOP 250CE professional, you're going to be able to cut and grind and sand and scrape for hours and hours and hours. Before we continue, though, it's important to differentiate between the GOP 250CE professional and the cutters, blades,scrapers, etc, that you'll fit onto it. As noted above, a guide to helping you buy the correct blade for the application you're undertaking will follow soon. In the meantime, let's focus on what the GOP 250CE is and what it does. Much as the iPad is a big touch screen and via the touch screen you interact with your installed apps, the GOP 250 CE is an 250W motor-powered oscillating accessory holder. Simple as that. If it sounds as if we're over simplifying the GOP, here are some specs to help you grasp what you're getting when you buy one. As well as the 250W motor, you're getting a hugely ergonomic device. Considering that Bosch call the GOP the "blue problem solver", it makes sense that they've liberally applied the surface of the device with adhesion friendly soft-grip areas; if you're going to be using it extensively for a huge variety of applications, you want it to be comfortable in your hand while you solve those problems... The design is purposefully compact, with Bosch boasting that the grip of the GOP 250 CE is the smallest on the corded market with a circumference of 180mm. Within that compact design Bosch have included a variable speed trigger allowing you to dial the speed of the oscillation per the material you're cutting or sanding, and there's a user-accessible panel for fast changing of the motor's carbon brushes. As we noted above, the GOP 250 CE is not battery powered, per its cousins. That means you're trailing a cable around as you work, and given that part of the usefulness of the GOP 250 CE is the ability to turn it to any angle (limited only by the dexterity of your wrists!) Bosch have fitted a ball grommet to the cable to protect it from breakages. Once again, a big part of the appeal of the GOP 250CE is the huge variety of applications it can tackle. Within that enormous range, though, you'll encounter jobs that require more grunt from the motor than others. For example, you're cutting a piece wood on a door frame and you hit a nail. Bosch have included their fabled constant electronic control to the motor to make sure you'll have the power you need, even under heavy load. And Bosch are claiming that the the "stacked construction" upon which the Bosch has been designed is going to make the GOP 250CE robust, but, perhaps crucially, lower in vibration output. An important consideration in today's health and safety mad world... So, you're excited now. You fancy the idea of having a "get out of jail" power tool in your kit.
