About this App

This simple calculator gives you a quick estimate of the Income Tax and National Insurance contributions you can expect to be deducted from your pay each week or month of the current tax year. It also gives you a summary of these amounts over the year and shows how this money will be spent by the Government.

This App will be useful if you don’t have a pay-slip, for example you are about to start a job and you want an estimate of the amount that will be deducted from your earnings.

It was developed by HM Revenue & Customs and uses official Government information.

Who can use this calculator?

The calculator is suitable if all of the following apply:

you are a United Kingdom taxpayer who pays tax through Pay As You Earn (PAYE)

you are under State Pension age

you are entitled to the basic tax-free Personal Allowance

you pay Class 1 National Insurance contributions

you do not contribute to a company or personal pension through your employer

you have employment income only – not occupational or personal pension income or other income, e.g. from savings

This simple calculator only works with National Insurance letter A and tax code 810L. If you earn more than £100,000 per year or your tax affairs are complex, this simple calculation won’t give an accurate estimate.

What you will need before you start

The only information you will need is your expected weekly or monthly ‘gross pay’ (the amount you earn before Income Tax and National Insurance are deducted), or your hourly rate and the number of hours worked each week.

What the calculator doesn't do

It doesn’t provide a result that is legally binding, nor is it a demand for payment. Remember, it is just an estimate.

The result is based on the figures you enter and relies on accurate information. It is calculated for information purposes only.

It doesn’t ask you for any personal identity information (you may have to provide your date of birth if it affects the calculation).

It doesn’t store or transmit any of the information you enter – HM Revenue & Customs cannot access the data.

It doesn’t calculate other taxes such as Capital Gains Tax.

How to use it

Simply enter information on your earnings (current or expected) into the calculator.

The results

The amounts estimated by the calculator are shown on the screen. You can see a breakdown of how your money will be spent by the Government and find out how your estimate was calculated.
