Wiping the slate clean for The Winchesters
As my previous review of Season 5 will show, I have so much love and time for Supernatural! Season 5 was epic, not only in storytelling, but in addressing some very interesting religious themes that are unbelievably relevant to the sad and ever changing word we all live in - but always with a Supernatural tone. Season 5 ended the immensely emotional 5 -season story arch that has gripped all Supernatural fans, and tied up most of the answers to questions that began in the Season one Pliot, and I for one feel they wrapped up the 5 seasons beautifully, with the sensational and poignant Swan Song episode leading us nicely into Season 6. Described by the show writers as a Noire, dark atmosphere, we begin with Dean having retired from Hunting for his "Apple Pie" family life with a previous fling, Lisa, and her son Ben, where regular watchers of Supernatural will recognise both from the 3rd season episode,"The Kids Are Alright". This storyline was the best direction to have taken Dean in - for so long, he has sacrificed all of his hopes and dreams for the realisation that hunting is all he can do, yet this superbly places Dean in a very uncomfortable position of normality, which is completely unnatural to him. Jensen Ackles plays Dean perfectly throughout this season, a real duck out of water side to his character that we have never seen from Dean before - uncertain, gulity and trying desperately to keep it together for the sake of his new family, whilst never being able to truly let go of who he knows he is, v's who he wants to be. Surrounded by family, but never more alone, we see Dean's pain and grief after losing his brother Sam to Lucifer, and the ultimate sacrifice Sam made in Swan Song - his life. However, you will know going into this that the huge twist was Sam had returned fro hell and watched over Dean's new life, but how much of Sam has come back? That is the very interesting theme surrounding Season 6, so I won't go in to too much in this review, but it's safe to say that Sam is played very differently by Jared Padalecki this season, and he truly shows his continued excellence in taking a character we all know so well, and playing him totally differently, a Sam none of us truly knows, and it is testiment to both the lead actors that we get two totally different characters in season 6, which provides, much like the tone and writing in season 6, an unsettling experience, both for the characters and fans of the show.
Season 6 isn't the best season - but it is a totally new story to tell, and along the way, there are some outstanding episodes - Weekend at Bobby's (first time direction for Jensen Ackles - superb!), Live Free or TwiHard, You Can't Handle The Truth, Caged Heat, Appointment at Samarra, Frontierland and the last three episodes of the season are truly amazing - possibly the best the show has ever written. Also, special mention to The French Mistake - the bravest, most creative episode the show has EVER done, and the funniest by far!! Season 7 begins shooting in July, so we are guaranteed another fabulous season of THE best show on TV - and where the shows creators, actors and crew will take us then is debatable, but the way Season 6 ended, it will truly be epic I am sure! Special mention must go to Sera Gamble, the new showrunner after creator Eric Kripke stepped down at the end of Season 5 for being fresh and brave with the show, and adding a new direction to take it into - not always paced well, but definately leading the way for what looks set to be a fantastic season 7! Jump on board the little show that can, and make this THE show to start watching in 2011 before season 7 - it truly is a show for the FANS - respectful, faithful and ALWAYS pushing boundaries and taking us to places we never imagined it would go! Supernatural is growing in creative respect in the US, and we can finally see it reaping the rewards it deserves - these actors, particularly Jensen Ackles, are beginning to be recognised for their outstanding body of work on this show, and if he doesn't get nominated for an Emmy this year, it is a huge injustice!
Supernatural Season 6
Unlike the other reviewer, i am really glad that Supernatural is back. There is one thing that Supernatural is not, and that is boring. The first episode was really good, as we see the reunion of Sam and Dean Winchester after the season five cliff hanger. Supernatural is one of the only TV shows i have seen that has a strong cult following, and it hasn't lost its edge since the very first season. I haven't missed an episode of the show since my cousin encouraged me to watch it. Every episode has been very entertaining to watch, some have been harrowing, some have been dramatic, some have been emotional, but thay have all been incredible. Supernatural has seen most supernatural creatures, like Witches, Werewolves, Vampires, Zombies, Skinwalkers, Djinn, Hell Hounds, Ghosts, Poltergeists, Ghouls, Wendigos, Shapeshifters, Angels, plenty of Demons, Gods, The Devil and the worst of them all.... Paris Hilton. I am really looking forward to the other episodes to air, and to see how the story continues. This is one of the best TV shows on at the moment and i highly recommend it.
Winchesters are back
I've just finished watching the new series (Series 6) from the `USA. Granted it starts slowly but believe me it starts to move on fast and in a direction I never imagined.
Give it a try, you won't be dissapointed
