The Boys from Cork Make Good!!

I saw these guys live in concert and they are just excellent. Passionate about their music and their energy and enthusiasm onstage reflects and projects that. This album is a testament to their innovative outlook on music and consolidates them as one of Ireland's most brilliant dance/electronic groups. Best of luck lads with the new album... as we used to say in the ould days.... it's KICKIN!!! :)

If you’re looking for a bit of audio escapism, then I recommend throwing on the new eponymous album from Exit Pursued by a Bear.
The first track, ‘Grey in Grey’ is a perfect opener. Rather than opting for a standardized simple drum pattern, Phil Lambert lays down a more intricate polyrhythmic drum part, dominated by off beats; both infectious and intense alongside the synths. Halfway through the song, the surprise change in tempo and tone is beautifully orchestrated and it departs in a more mellow direction.

‘Pish’ further lightens the mood. Tadgh Hickey’s soothing, somewhat plaintive vocals are like a subtle Morrissey, drawing you into an already hypnotic, synth-driven soundscape.

Rudely awoken from my reverie with the assault of ‘Earstwhile’ was perhaps too much of a departure from the rest of the album. It seems extreme to suddenly replace calm vocals for an angst driven rant in this one-off song that might have sat better elsewhere.

The album settles into a more ambient theme for the most part with tracks, ‘Charter of Basic Principles’, ‘Hug’ and ‘Lending Ears’, ‘Lucid Me’ and ‘Amédée’. Stand out tune is dance track, ‘You Got Burned’, taking things up a couple of notches with its throbbing bass line, forceful rhythms, trance inducing chanting and it really cooks.

The mystical gem ‘Squirm’ rounds things off nicely and left me with a lingering sense of calmness and well-being.
