Customer Reviews

It's a grower, give it a chance.

On first listen I wasn't sure what to make of this album - my first thought was that it was a disappointment after Songs from the Deep Forest. However, that is more a reflection on just how good that album was and still is - I would rate it as one of the best albums of the last 5 years. However, after repeated listens the album has really grown on me, and while I wouldn't say that it has the exuberance of the first album it certainly has some exceptionally good songs - Why Does Anybody Love, Sweet Sweet Kisses, Let Me Go, By The Skin of My Teeth, I could go on. I consider Duke Special to be a unique artist, and I think the songs as captured on the album reflect how he sounded at that moment, in a few months time when they have been road tested further live they will probably have acquired lives of their own as the older songs have. I can't wait ot see him live again, and to hear how these songs will have developed.

Gets better after a while

Now at first I didn't like this album but after a while of listening to it, it started to grow on me. His last one was still better but this is still 4 stars for me.

Definitely a grower...... some very good tracks

Its definitely not as good as the last album, Songs from the Deep Forest. However there are some really really good tracks like Nothing Comes Easy, Mr. Nobody and Mocking Bird Wish me Luck. It's a bit more of a pop album too. Overall another solid album from Duke Special.

The self-proclaimed creator of "hobo chic" — a reference both to his distinctive dress style and his unusually refined spin on traditional music hall and vaudeville forms — cuts a striking figure on-stage, often performing alone with only his piano and old, squeaky...
