There are covers and then there are Silver Lining covers
1986! What a year for music it had all the iconic songs for that decade in one year. Top Guns Dangerzone, Bon Jovi's stadium anthem Living On a Pray and one of John Peel's favourite tunes There is a Light That Never Goes Out by The Smiths. While each of these are proper classics sometimes its refreshing to hear a new or modern take. This is what this album is all about really, with the help of some of Ireland’s established and emerging acts aswell as the next crop of talented sound enigneers.
Right from the offset you know this album is for real. It hits off with a powerful larger than life version of Peter Gabriel's Sledgehammer done by Superfly with Bressie of The Blizzards.
Louize Carrolls You're The Voice is pure pop as if lifted from latest chart toppers.
James Vincent McMorrow does what he does turning something great into some thing beautiful and soulful Higher Love is no exception.
Some stay faithful like Superfly and Paul Noonan (aka Bell x1) singing the fantastic You can call me Al. Paul Noonan's vocals hit the spot while Superfly don't miss a beat, backwards bass thrown in for good measure too.
Then there are the down right imaginative covers where the artist put their creative and unique spin on the track. The Cast of Cheers did this with their take on the high octane Highway to the Dangerzone, and it delivers with a punch of synth and what can only be described as 80's nintendo sounds. At only 2.30 Its addictive!!! Play on repeat and save yourself the repetitive strain injury of pressing the back button. This Club turn to the dance floor for their rendition of Dancing on the Ceiling. It has to be one of the highlights of the album up beat chessey-ness. And RSAG does atmospheric instrumental tribute to The Smith's track.
You will catch yourself singing along to all these hits as if you've heard them some where before but can't place where. And its all for charity!
