Brilliant Debut album from CODES!
Those of us familiar with the work of this up-and-coming band from Dublin have been waiting on this album for some time. It certainly has been worth the wait. This is a stellar debut album and showcases exactly what CODES are about. They are not a band who follow trends; they are keen to pursue their own path musically. With soulful lyrics and vocals combining with a strong combination of bass, percussion, synths and guitars Codes can be quiet and mystical before turning over a powerful anthem such as the title track. They show their mellow side on tracks like Magnetic North, and even have a strings only piece called Telos that wams the heart of the listener. Several singles are included here; This Is Goodbye, You Are Here and Guided By Ghosts and these help to make this one of the most important Irish debut albums in years.
Truly a great Debut!
This album really surprised me. When I first heard "This is Goodbye' on the radio I visited iTunes to see about the album. I had no idea these guys were Irish which was a nice surprise. I love the quirky merge of the tracks at the start of the album. The depth of variety and range of musicianship and downright good singing on the ablum is impressive with plenty of uptempo tracks as well as some well crafted slower, even classically inspired airs. Personally I love melody when listening to music and this did not disappoint either. I will look deeper into learning more about the band and watch out for their next live gig. It did strike me that there was a wee hint of 'Duke Special' and 'Snow Patrol' in there... but only a hint, production values and arrangements maybe. iTunes puts 'Codes' within the genre of electronic... not sure I totally agree with this. All music is electronic these days. 'Codes' are not rip off artists but have their own distinctive style. Buying this album is a must. You will not be disappointed. Considered giving album 5 stars but gave it 4 instead... 5 stars would suggest that the album was perfect... but this is these guys first album... can you imagine how they will sound when they have actually mastered the craft of making albums? Watch this space!
