Album Review

After Radiohead refused to accept the mantle of "world's biggest and most important rock band," Coldplay stepped up to the plate with their debut, Parachutes. Tasteful, earnest, introspective, anthemic, and grounded in guitars, Coldplay was everything Radiohead weren't but fans wanted them to be; Parachutes became a transatlantic hit and the sequel, A Rush of Blood to the Head, was even bigger, positioning Coldplay to be new Radiohead and the new U2. To that end, Coldplay's third album, X&Y, is designed to elevate them to the major leagues. It's deliberate and sleek, hip enough to sample Kraftwerk and blend in fashionable post-punk allusions without altering the band's core. X&Y is hardly a bold step forward, but rather a consolidation of Coldplay's strengths, particularly their skill at crafting surging, widescreen epics.

Customer Reviews

Next time keep it simple....

The burden of expectation on Coldplay to come up with the goods for their third album shows. Instead of progressing from their first two excellent efforts we instead get some flashes of brilliance surrounded by what can only be described as filler. One can only imagine the pressure they must have been under from all angles... fans, media, record label and most of all, themselves. The sound is way too "big" and over-produced on most tracks. When they let themselves loose from this constraint on such songs as A Message, Low and Till Kingdom Come we get a glimpse of what might have been. There is no doubt that this is a good album but there are four very talented musicians and songwriters in the group who deserve to make a great one. If they stop trying to be the best band in the world and to emulate U2 they might actually accomplish this.

Excellent - The Best CD of 2005?

A great CD with some top quality tracks. As other reviewers have noted, the quality of the songs varies. Square One, What If, Talk Swallowed In The Sea are my personal favourites. But even the weakest tracks such as Til Kingdom Come are good. The production on the CD is incredible. Listen to this on a good quality sound system and it sounds amazing.

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
