Description

Hokusai is a multitrack audio editor for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. Record or import a track, and make it sound the way you want it to: not just trimming the ends, but full cut, copy, paste and delete, and a suite of filters and special effects available.

"Beautiful clutter-free interface" — TouchProducer.com

"Hokusai will convince you that audio was meant to be edited with a touch screen — it's just so natural within this app that you’ll find yourself consistently coming back to it." — iOS Music And You

Edit many tracks side-by-side, mix them together, and export to Wave or MP4 format — then transfer them to your computer, send them to another app on your device, or upload to cloud services.

Hokusai is streamlined to give you a clean, clear view of your tracks. Use the familiar pinch and swipe gestures to zoom right in and fiddle with fine detail, or step back to see the big picture. Select pieces of audio. Live "scrubbing" means you can hear the sound under your fingertip as you make your adjustments. And you needn't fear a bad edit with our full undo/redo support — even after closing your project.

Hokusai comes free with a set of useful tools such as fade in/out, normalise volume levels, reverse time, and basic synthesis. If you need more power, you can upgrade from inside the app to add new tools and effects, including: Per-track volume/mute/panning, selecting across multiple tracks at once, presets and favourites, grain synthesis, noise gating, time-stretching, pitch-bending, echo, reverb, modulation (AM & FM), resonance, distortion, grunge, vocal levelling, monster voice, high/low/band-pass/notch-cut filter and more — many of which can be previewed live.

Good but with serious Interface problems

Thanks to the developer for responding to my possibly too harsh criticisms. Actually the functionality of the app is very good but it’s let down by the interface. Clicking on tracks to bring up the editor regularly simply moves the track by accident (just put a drop down menu on top of the screen). There should be full ‘tape style’ controls visible at all times (not just ‘play’); the huge drop down menu should be either custom-ordered or at least have drop-down panels to avoid continuous scrolling for every single edit. While previewing effects it should be possible to move the play head to the desired point in the audio file instead of having to play the whole thing to the end and restart. These and other basic, simple interface redesigns could make Hokusai a great audio editor on a platform where, bizarrely, there are so few real contenders

Developer Response ,

Hello! Thanks for updating your review. Here are some tips that you may find helpful: You can hold down the Play/Pause button to reset the Play Head to the start. You can customise the list of effects by favouriting the ones you use most for quick access (including presets). When previewing an effect, you can move the Play Head by using the bar that appears at the bottom of the effect’s control panel. You can find information on these features, and many more, in the User Guide, available from the Project Tools menu.

The best multi track recorder around

This is hands down the best multitrack recorder around. It has a very user friendly, no nonsense interface so you can get right into a recording.
Theres also a good bit of manipulation you can do to each individual track that is akin to audacity or other simple track editor programs.
For songwriting or banking musical ideas this is a must have.
Sometimes the app can crash but it saves everything automatically so you can restore your project. it's a small price to pay for a great great application.
