THOMAS PATRICK GILMARTIN OPINION: THE MAHON tribunal report has come as a nearly complete vindication of my father, Tom Gilmartin. Without my father, Ireland would never have found out about the corrupt activities of people like Frank Dunlop, nor the existence of a corruption ring at the heart of planning in Ireland. It is due to my father that the tribunal discovered that Bertie Ahern had huge amounts of money going through his accounts for which his explanations do not hold water. My father led the tribunal to perhaps its biggest success – it was he who, in early 1998, told the tribunal about his suspicion Dunlop was being used as a “bagman” for corrupt payments to politicians. He showed it accounts which included payments to a company called “Shefran Ltd” – whose very purpose was to hide the scale and purpose of the large round-figure, VAT-free, invoice-free payments being made to Dunlop. My father openly demanded, in front of witnesses, to know what the purpose of Shefran Ltd was, and he was not told precisely because it was known my father had complained vociferously about corruption several times. When the tribunal contacted my father in 1998, he immediately told it what he believed, but could never prove, had been going on. We now know that Dunlop, contrary to the dominant narrative, did not have a Pauline conversion to the truth in April 2000. He continued to cover for developers and senior politicians. My father’s allegation about what he was told about payments from Owen O’Callaghan to Ahern has also been found to be true. The report agrees that O’Callaghan did tell my father that he had paid Ahern, but it couldn’t, because of Ahern’s untruthful evidence, establish whether the payment took place – it could neither prove nor disprove it. My father was telling the truth all along. My father was brought to the attention of the tribunal by a Garda report in 1989 which included a number of allegations, now found to be true, that the Garda then dismissed without even interviewing several of the main witnesses. It was admitted at the tribunal that Liam Lawlor was probably not interviewed because he was a TD. My father received a phone call during the investigation from someone purporting to be a garda who told him to “f--k off back to England”. The tribunal found that the phone call did happen and that its purpose was to intimidate my father into keeping quiet. NATO's assault on Syria | For the past six months and longer once Libya had fallen to the NATO sponsored 'rebels', we have faced a continuous media onslaught about Syria with reports of protests, shootings, killings, attacks, bombing and so forth. The backdrop to the narrative is that this is part of the Arab Spring which started last year and it is a good thing overall. So many people are probably wondering what really has been happening, given that this is the same media that was cheer leading the Iraq war almost 10 years ago even though at least a million+ are now dead as a result. And yet somehow they want to imply that they are doing the right thing now. We should also recall that this is the same media that is promoting austerity and encouraging us to accept the blame for the mad years of the bubble and as a consequence we should pay up the €90 billion bailout and in the process see all the state services stripped to the bone. ExplicitEoghan Harris whips establishment into line on Sinn Fein | Eoghan Harris suffered a rare sideswipe on Marian Finnucane's radio programme on RTE RADIO ONE on Sunday 9 October 2011. Former Fine Gael minister Gemma Hussey said she wanted to say something on Martin McGuinness. Fianna Fail supporting Marian was more than happy to oblige, thinking perhaps that there was to be some McGuinness bashing. Instead Gemma noted what is obvious to readers of the rag every week, but is rarely mentioned on Marian's radio programme, that the Sunday Independent seemed to be having an anti Sinn Fein day. She also mentioned that Eoghan Harris claimed to have received a death threat and that a reporter from that paper claimed to have have had a rough time with McGuinness supporters. Ken Murray noted that had the the Sunday Independent had its way there would have been no Hume Adams talks and no peace process. Unused to such clear criticism, the Sindo editorial team went into spasmodic shock. Eoghan was dispatched to clarify matters and to get the spokespeople for the establishment back in line. He barged his way on to the programme and laid down the law, Joe McCarthy style. Gemma Hussey had not demonstrated supine subservience to the Sindo's sermons. Eoghan made the very prim and proper ex-blueshirt sound subversive. He didn't get it all his own way and was sent wittering back into the outer darknss from which he came. The two segments are in the attached AUDIO, first Gemma Hussey and Ken Murray, then Eoghan Harris yapping down the telephone line at Hussey and Murray. Is the long icy grip of Sindoism slipping, or is it just a Presidential election effect? Note that Hussey said merely that she was sorry if she 'upset' Eoghan. She did not withdraw the tenor of her remarks, perhaps knowing full well that the person most identified with Gay Mitchell's disastrous Sinn Fein basing strategy is none other than Eoghan Harris. Certainly, if taking up arms were a disqualifying factor in seeking high office, the pages of Irish history would be filled with a totally different list of players... I believe that this presidential election provides the Irish people with a unique opportunity to have their say on a series of issues that have been decided upon without their involvement or consent. Here I speak of the bank guarantee, NAMA, the socialisation of private debt, the loss of economic sovereignty to the EU and IMF and the austerity programme which has brought untold hardship to the poor, the vulnerable and the disadvantaged. I am convinced that any candidate who takes a critical stand on these issues and who is willing to become a voice of opposition to the swingeing measures that are being unfairly imposed will gain the support of the majority of Irish people who are both angry and hurting as a consequence of the present unjust situation. Along with him giving thier support are many more, perhaps not the most well known or the creme de la creme of irish society, but many that are very well respected by many normal people in their communites; Film, Sport, Art, Writing... ExplicitTranstioning from OIL DEPENDANCE to local RESILIENCE, through peaceful REVOLUTIONARY action [1] | Thanks for that T, I had not heard about Mike Ruppert before but am in agreement of much of what he has stated. I am well aware of the PEAK OIL situation, I helped set up the Transition group in Barcelona (transitioning form oil dependance to local resilience) and here in Barcelona, where I live and have been participating with the #SPANISHREVOLUTION im glad to say that much of the transition / permaculture / degrowth / peak oil ideas have entered the discourse and affirmative action is happening at many different levels. Im sure your aware of Transition groups, it did originally come from Kinsale permaculture course, are you aware of the movement, are you involved, if so where, how is it going, what is your take on the movement. Last July, 2 of us traveled from Barcelona to the Transition Network conference in Liverpool, while there we communicated to the people about what had gone on, in transition terms, during the still ongoing 15M "Spanish Revolution", there was a huge and very supportive response from people there, people from all over the world; japan, brazil, US, europe, Australia... So hopefully the idees are spreading further. It seems, from afar, that the US transition movement is really taking off, im not sure how many "transitioners" are part of the OCCUPY communities and groups, i hope and expect quite a few, I posted on their facebook page about the goings on but have not heard any responses, yet. See end of this post for the vids and from that time, but more so, listen to the audio after we showed short vids in an impromptu session one night, gathered there were rob hopkins, ben brongwin, peter lipman (who displayed an excellent knowledge of the revolutionary and pre civil war republican times in barcelona, which included huge participation, local currencies, local food distribution, real democracy) pete north (liverpool based geographer, author of LOCAL MONEY) and many others, it was a very passionate discussion and hopefully it served as an important step in the transition story. My own view, is that we are at a very special moment. Transition was in its own kind of ghetto, in england its been seen as very white, middle class, nice, non confrontational, almost an extended cookery and sewing class. This view, I think is firstly unfair as it is more mixed than that, but i feel it needed to enter that type of world at first for general acceptance and now it, the movement, is growing and going off into exceptional territory... On the other side, the "activist world" has also been in its own ghetto, now something has erupted and that has alllowed for the breaking of ghetto walls and true mixing... I think the 15M discourse is stronger and deeper becuase its had transition / degrowth and ecological critique entered into the discourse more, ie, really pointing out what are the core problems (infinite growth impossible on limited planet, peak oil will give us a right kick in the bolix very soon...) but also that the transition movement is all the better for people, whether or not with transition hats on, have been participating in the revolution on the streets of barcelona; sleeping in the square, involved with commissions, setting up a community garden in placa catalunya (to further highlight oil - food - crash and collapse story) thereby pushing the limits of what exactly transition is. Our own transition group, as well as many other groups here in Catlunya does focus on economic situation, we have alt currency and no money networks (xarxa - the network) there are much intercambios (free no money exchanges) and a growing culture of sharing or alternatives to money (watch the great doc about all that at Homage to Catalonia II ). Local currencies is a big part of the transition movement, have you seen the "Brixton Pound". And in case you doubt the diversity of the transition movement, we now have the first favala (shanty town) of Sao Paolo, Brazil in Transition, as well as a whole host more initiaves all around | 5 10 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

ExplicitTranstioning from OIL DEPENDANCE to local RESILIENCE, through peaceful REVOLUTIONARY action [2] | Thanks for that T, I had not heard about Mike Ruppert before but am in agreement of much of what he has stated. I am well aware of the PEAK OIL situation, I helped set up the Transition group in Barcelona (transitioning form oil dependance to local resilience) and here in Barcelona, where I live and have been participating with the #SPANISHREVOLUTION im glad to say that much of the transition / permaculture / degrowth / peak oil ideas have entered the discourse and affirmative action is happening at many different levels. Im sure your aware of Transition groups, it did originally come from Kinsale permaculture course, are you aware of the movement, are you involved, if so where, how is it going, what is your take on the movement. Last July, 2 of us traveled from Barcelona to the Transition Network conference in Liverpool, while there we communicated to the people about what had gone on, in transition terms, during the still ongoing 15M "Spanish Revolution", there was a huge and very supportive response from people there, people from all over the world; japan, brazil, US, europe, Australia... So hopefully the idees are spreading further. It seems, from afar, that the US transition movement is really taking off, im not sure how many "transitioners" are part of the OCCUPY communities and groups, i hope and expect quite a few, I posted on their facebook page about the goings on but have not heard any responses, yet. See end of this post for the vids and from that time, but more so, listen to the audio after we showed short vids in an impromptu session one night, gathered there were rob hopkins, ben brongwin, peter lipman (who displayed an excellent knowledge of the revolutionary and pre civil war republican times in barcelona, which included huge participation, local currencies, local food distribution, real democracy) pete north (liverpool based geographer, author of LOCAL MONEY) and many others, it was a very passionate discussion and hopefully it served as an important step in the transition story. My own view, is that we are at a very special moment. Transition was in its own kind of ghetto, in england its been seen as very white, middle class, nice, non confrontational, almost an extended cookery and sewing class. This view, I think is firstly unfair as it is more mixed than that, but i feel it needed to enter that type of world at first for general acceptance and now it, the movement, is growing and going off into exceptional territory... On the other side, the "activist world" has also been in its own ghetto, now something has erupted and that has alllowed for the breaking of ghetto walls and true mixing...
