Small Business Show: Company Focus Revisited – Ponaire Irish Coffee | A year ago we talked to Pónaire (Irish for Bean) which was established in 2006 by Tommy and Jennifer Ryan. They import high quality Arabica beans from around the world and hand roast them at their roastery in Annacotty, Co. Limerick. We went back there to see what had changed for the them and what have they learned this past year in business. Jennifer explained why they changed their mind and went back to the government tendering process and how avoiding big name supermarkets has been of great benefit to their business. Small Business Show: Pensions & Finance for the Self Employed | Ronan Bray is an independent financial consultant offering broad based professional financial advice with a speciality in pre and post retirement planning. Recently he came into the Small Business Show studio to outline the options for entrepreneurs when it comes to retirement planning. When it comes to pensions, it’s not a case of “one size for all”, especially when it comes to entrepreneurs. For example, many business people may have no interest in retiring at 65. Sometimes entrepreneurs say that they cannot afford a pension when they are building a business, but it’s worth remembering that pension contributions are a tax-efficient way to take money out of your business, and that even a modest contribution can make a significant impact on the final sum. Small Business Show: David Quaid Spills the Beans on SEO | David Quaid runs Primary Position, an agency which specialises in Search Engine Optimisation or SEO. Recently he met Conn for a coffee and an interview for the Small Business Show. David points out that SEO and marketing is the first step in online business. Before you build the site – before you choose a domain name – you need to consider your target audience: who they are, and how they will find you. Content is critically important, he explains. It should be meaningful and useful, in the language of your customers – not of the ‘trade’. Users go online to research solutions to their problems but they may not know the technical terms for those solutions. Good SEO anticipates these searches and responds with meaningful content that draws traffic. Links are important, he says, but they must be relevant, in the context of the text where they are found and in the overall nature of the subject matter or business in question. You can’t fake this stuff – he says. Search engines devote considerable resources to making sure their results are relevant – otherwise they lose trust and, as a consequence, business. Good SEO, he agrees, is about good marketing and good customer relations. The Small Business Show is broadcast each weekend in syndication on Irish radio.
