Thanks, Al Gore [Podcast #30] | Barry Shein - photo via ICANN photos on Flickr (http://www.flickr.com/photos/icann/3345169510/) This week’s guest is Barry Shein, President of The World, the first company to offer Internet access to the general public, when it started in 1989. Today some people consider Internet access to be a human right, but back then it was very different. Barry still has the email he received from the US National Science Foundation, granting him “permission” to sell internet access to ordinary people, as opposed to “bona fide researchers”. It’s heavy on the nostalgia this week, but we also discuss Twitter’s new Terms of Service, Facebook’s IPO, and Google’s new enhanced services for brands. Google is also in the news this week over anti-trust concerns by the EU, and we also discuss the announcement by the Dublin Web Summit organisers that they are bringing their F.ounders event to New York. We also try out So.cl, Microsoft’s new test platform for social search. It’s only so-so. Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Now you can register .co.uk domains up to 10 years! They’ve also got a special offer on .be domains. Find out more on the award winning Blacknight blog! File It In The Shredder [Podcast #29] | A paper shredder (Photo credit: Wikipedia) This week’s guest is Francesco Cetraro of Afilias. From their headquarters in Dublin, Afilias run top level domains such as .info and .mobi and also provide the GoMobi mobile website builder tools (currently available on a 30-day free trial from Blacknight!) For this podcast, Francesco joins us from his home in Sweden, with Michele in Carlow and Conn in the studio. Thanks Skype! There is a regrettable amount of adolescent sniggering on this week’s episode, but it’s hard to blame us with the news that endakenny.xxx has been registered along with the names of several of Ireland’s political parties. On a serious note, we view at as a symptom of Ireland’s failure to engage with the internet at an official level. Heard about the newspapers who wanted to charge people for linking to their content? No, really! You couldn’t make it up. Tesla was cool – Edison was a douche! And we talked about the Facebook IPO too! Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Now you can register .co.uk domains up to 10 years! They’ve also got a special offer on .be domains. Another Arrow in the Linux Quiver [Podcast #28] | Our guest this week is Paul Savage, SEO expert and Irishman abroad. Paul lives and works in Munich, where he runs BlackDog.ie, an SEO consultancy business. He’s a regular listener to technology.ie and after a twitter exchange with Michele he agreed to come on the show this week for a chat about Search Engine Optimisation. Paul points out that for most people, it boils down to a choice between time or money. If you’ve got time but no money there’s a lot that the average webmaster can do to improve his or her traffic without having to hire a professional such as himself. He lists 8 common SEO pitfalls to avoid: Buying spammy links, selling links, link exchanges. It doesn’t work and wastes money. Purchasing video views / Facebook likes / Google Plus votes. See above. Non unique content – i.e. copying supplier manuals FAQs, glossary, marketing : what you can do to either stop this content being indexed or thoughts on re-writing it. [nofollow/noindex] Navigational issues cleaning up after you remove pages. : should you 301 it or leave the page there hanging ? linking to relevant sources : linking to outside resources is good, linking to competitors bad, but if you have to do , rel=nofollow them. Over optimisation, to the detriment of of user experience: Writing usable titles, anchors, navigation What is keyword research: seeing your site from your customers perspective, or different types of customer perspectives, and now what are they potentially search for. Structuring a website, having a hierarchy, showing search engines and humans a relationship in your content Not testing your own ideas : Don’t be afraid to test, wait and analyse. If you have an idea why not try it and see how the SERPs react ? Both Paul and Michele agree there are a lot of free online resources to help improve SEO, such as robotstxt.org and Google Webmaster Tools. Got any suggestions? Leave them in the comments – thanks! Also discussed on this week’s podcast: Newsle.com. It searches your Facebook and LinkedIn contacts and creates a news page of stories which mention your friends. As Michele points out, it’s only interesting if your friends are, but it’s surprising all the same to see some of the news stories about people you know. Damien Mulley has FOI’d the support given to F.ounders and DWS by state agencies. We’ve got mixed views on this. And speaking of Mulley, the Social Media Awards shortlist is out for the event on May 17th. EA games are offering titles for Ubuntu. Meanwhile, Ubuntu is on track to ship on 5% of PCs next year! Facebook’s IPO Roadshow rolls on – but Wall Street raises an eyebrow at Mark’s hoodie. Finally GettingBusinessOnline.ie celebrates its first anniversary this year, with over 10,000 new Irish businesses online. It’s supported by Blacknight, along with Google, An Post and the County Enterprise Boards and it will continue for another year. Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Now you can register .co.uk domains up to 10 years! They’re still running a GoMobi promotion and the recruitment campaign continues. Also, this week they’ve got a special offer on .be domains. Like the show? We love making it! War Driving, SEO and Michele’s Inner Voice [Podcast #27] | This show was recorded late on Tuesday night, with Michele in a Dublin hotel room prior to taking a New York flight the next day. We talk about the Google ‘Wi-Spy’ story. The New York Times identified the Google engineer who wrote the software – it turns out he’s also the author of Netstumbler, a very useful tool for analysing the WiFi access points in a given location. I’ve used it myself, when trying to find a Wide-Area WiFi solution to a rural broadband problem. Speaking of Google, Streetview is moving indoors! We also discuss the Referendum Commission and their Check the Register campaign on Facebook. (Fine says Michele – but this kind of data should be accessible with an API, like the Companies Registration Office.) Dublin Beta was on this week. Bullet Accounts was the people’s choice on the night and you can hear an interview with one of the founders here. Speaking of startups, Damien Mulley has an idea that some kind of Kickstarter element should form part of the process of state support for innovative ideas. We discuss the contrasting fortunes of Nokia and Samsung, and we wrap up the show with a chat about SEO, and an extract from an interview I did with David Quaid for The Small Business Show. Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. BIG NEWS! Now you can register .co.uk domains up to 10 years! They’re still running a GoMobi promotion and the recruitment campaign continues. Blacknight are sponsoring the IIA annual conference next week. Want to go? Cooking with Patrick [Podcast #26] | This week’s guest is Patrick Ruddell, a domainer, and the owner of sciencefiction.com. With a background in real estate, he became interested in domains as an investment career when the property slowdown hit in the US. But he’s quick to point out that the real-estate analogy for web domains is over-used and not very accurate. When Patrick bought ScienceFiction.com for $175,000 it was just an affiliate marketing page with almost no traffic. He and his wife have developed it into a content-rich site serving the science fiction fan community. Also this week we discussed the newly launched Google Drive: there’s a lot of talk about it – but has anyone used it yet? Also Larry and Sergei want to mine asteroids. And something about a cloud in the shape of Ireland? Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Lightly Salted [Podcast #25] | Serbian tech blogger and social media marketeer, Nebojsa Radovic, aka ENIAC, joins Conn and Michele as a guest on this week’s podcast. Being the week that’s in it, we remember a former flagship of Irish technology with an unfortunate history. Titanic has been somewhat rehabilitated by the movies in recent years, but the current fad for using it in marketing is still a bit of an acquired taste. We discuss Viber, Vox.io and VOIP in general, as well as the privacy issues in sharing your phone contacts with a service provider. Michele’s got a new toy: “Iomega® Home Media Network Hard Drive, Cloud Edition” with lots of bells and whistles and web interface (screenshot here). There’s also a business user version. Facebook appear to be dragging their heels slightly in complying with the Irish Data Protection Commisioner audit requirements, but the DPC Office says they are satisfied. Some of Facebook’s critics however are not satisfied. Conn tries out the “Download Your Data” service but wonders where is the information they collect from all the Like buttons? Facebook say they’re happy with CISPA, the new cybersecurity bill, but the White House is not. Michele thinks we can expect it will need major amendments if it is ever going to pass. But the Calyx Institute have a plan to set up an ISP which would find themselves incapable of complying with a request from law-enforcement for customer data. Their proposal: end-to-end encryption of all services. Finally, Michele’s found his motivation for exercise: running from Zombies! Dot-Bubble [Podcast #24] | A bubble. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Instagram is worth €1bn? What?! In a rare moment of unity, both Conn and Michele are in agreement. Watch out! It’s a big fat tech bubble and it’s gonna blow! Google Plus gets a new look! Social Media Awards longlists are out – and they’re long! Check out Memolane. It builds a timeline of your aggregated social media activity going back years. It’s actually much cooler than it sounds! We salute Red Hat. Some questioned whether you could build a business on free software? 13 years after their IPO, they’re turning over €1bn. ICANN screw up on the deadline for new gTLD applications – not good enough, says Michele. Meanwhile ICM Registry (who brought you .XXX) announce plans for .sex, .adult and – in case you were in any doubt – .porn. Finally, you thought you were safe from malware in Mac-land? So did the 600,000 Mac users whose machines were compromised in a botnet thanks to the Flashback Trojan. Detection tools are available from F-Secure, among others. Hand Waving and Bluster [Podcast #23] | A Sharp MZ-700 8-bit microcomputer. (Photo credit: Wikipedia) Recently the victim of a burglary, Michele puts a brave face on things as he Skypes Conn this week from an aged laptop. We discuss April Fool tech gags, including Google Maps with 8-bit graphics and get nostalgic for simpler times. Nowadays we’ve got hundreds of times more computing power in our pockets. What would you do with 64KB of RAM nowadays anyway – or even 640KB! Why your Company Sucks at Social Media (hint: you hired a ‘guru’!) Jeff Bezos is scavenging space history. James Cameron explores the deep. And Dropbox increases the incentives to refer your friends. Did you miss the recent debate on the Copyright Review with Minister Seán Sherlock? Get it here! Also, the new ‘Center for Copyright Information’ in the US appears surprisingly balanced! Facebook’s ‘Timeline’ is now the default appearance both for personal profiles and for pages. James Larkin explains how to get the best out of it. Michele is charmed by the simplicity of photo sharing service Via.me and he has a cautionary reminder about claiming your username on Pinterest. Finally, check out St Patrick’s Day in the software capital of Siberia! Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Scrapbooks and Supermodels [Podcast 22] | Michele is back from his travels and joins Conn for a podcast that’s all about boundaries. Yes, we’re a pair of loudmouth extroverts, but that doesn’t mean that we share everything! Take Pinterest, for example. Conn likes Michele’s collection of Actresses and Models, but he’s not sure he wants to share his taste (or lack of it) with the online world. What you see on Pinterest reflects your taste and that of your friends, and its phenomenal growth while still “invitation only” has been partly attributed to the curating activity of scrapbooking moms. But back to the boundaries. Some recent cases in the States have seen employers ask job candidates to provide their social media passwords as part of the application process. It’s a practice which has been criticised by legislators and by Facebook itself which has pointed out that it also compromises the privacy of Facebook friends and breaches the Terms and Conditions of the site. We talk about the household charge and data protection. Michele points out that their SEO isn’t very good when it comes to finding the site (although it seems to be improving – your mileage may vary). Also: Hollywood wants us to get excited about movie trailers – so they put out a trailer for the trailer! And Gmail begins providing explanations why messages end up in Spam. Patently Obvious [Podcast #21] | Brought to you by Blacknight, it’s the Technology.ie podcast episode 21, presented by Conn Ó Muíneacháin and Michele Neylon. “It’s not like I’m over here in Costa Rica sitting by the pool drinking nice cocktails all day long and working on my tan”, explains Michele. He’s at ICANN 43 this week and apparently it’s not going smoothly. New TLDs are the subject of much discussion, with special protection being sought for the Red Cross and International Olympic Committee in particular. And some people are arguing for for more verification of domain registrants. Conn is cross with Google again. Copying links from Google search results reveals that they’re being routed through some Google link tracking stuff. It’s not a big problem, but … annoying! Fancy an Apple TV? No not that Apple TV – an Apple TV set! Shout out to #gamesfleadh and also to #coderdojo! CoderDojo is spreading at an impressive rate in Ireland and abroad. Yahoo! are suing Facebook. Are patents helping or hindering innovation? Is the system broken? Technology.ie is brought to you by Blacknight, Ireland’s largest provider of domains and hosting. Like the show?
