Description
Acts and Romans offers biblical content and hermeneutical tools for the faithful use of these books in Christian ministry. Dr. Cara, an expert in the Luke-Acts narrative, explores main redemptive-historical, thematic, and systematic theological issues raised in the Acts narrative. The Acts section emphasizes the need to consider original and modern meaning in interpretation. The Romans section traces the main thesis of Paul's argument, explaining and defending the traditional Reformed approach to Romans's discussion of justification, sanctification, adoption, and glorification. Additional topics include interaction with the New Perspective on Paul and an exegesis of Romans 9-11 that provides historical sensitivity and exegetical finesse.

Excellent for the Academic
I did not register for the course or read the assigned material. **** Dr. Cara takes a framework approach as opposed to a Bible study approach. That is, he provides a framework of tools for the student to analyze the text on his or own rather than providing one detailed perspective (the professor’s) for the student to learn. In short, this course is for the scholar more than the preacher. **** Dr. Cara does address the texts of Acts and Romans but only as a survey. His intent is to demonstrate how the scholar would approach the text rather than give a complete explanation of the text. **** The excursus on hermeneutics is exceptional. I wish that Reformed Theological Seminary (RTS) would offer a complete course by Dr. Cara on hermeneutics. **** The excursus on the New Perspectives on Paul (NPP) is also exceptional. **** Dr. Cara also gives a worthwhile comparison and contrast of Biblical theology, systematic theology, and redemptive-historical theology. **** He gives a fair treatment of Roman Catholic theology and how it contrasts with Reformed theology. **** Dr. Cara mentions Federal Vision but unfortunately, he didn’t have enough time to address it in any depth. **** Unfortunately, the production quality is lacking. The volume keeps fading in and out. This lack of production quality detracts from an otherwise excellent course.
