Too academic
I greatly respect John Frame I like one other course he taught. It seems as though apologetic courses tend to be overly academic. The whole purpose is to "give a reason for the hope that lies within us" but I feel these lectures do not train you to do that. You could study the epistimology of all the great writers but then when you talk to the person in the marketplace, you are not prepared to give a defense. I audited a WTS course on apologetics and it was the same thing. Maybe two stars is too harsh but I don't feel this course prepares one to go into the marketplace of ideas and give a defense of the gospel which is the whole purpose of the course.
Disappointing
I did not register for the course or read the assigned material.
This course is an introduction to apologetics, a philosophical defense of the Christian faith, and Dr. Frame is one off the best scholars in the field. Major themes include the historical development of apologetics, proofs of the existence of God, and various approaches to apologetics.
I have listened to nearly all of the RTS courses on iTunes and this is the only one that I would not recommend to others.
There is much to be commended. The course is well organized. Dr. Frame is a very good speaker. The recording quality is good. In general, the material is presented well.
The problem for me is the material, not the presentation. For example:
• There seems to be as much or more time devoted to Augustine and Cornelius Van Til as to Jesus Christ.
• In Lecture 21, Dr. Frame says, “I usually don’t need my Bible in an apologetics class.”
• Proof and epistemology are the core of this class. But can one prove faith? Doesn’t perfect proof drive out faith? Of all the testimonies you have heard, how many people became Christians because it is true as opposed to becoming a Christian because they encountered a living God by faith?
• In Lecture 11, Dr. Frame asserts, “There is no part of Scripture that is contrary to reason.” But is that true? Romans 5:8 says, “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners Christ died for us.” Is that reason or is that a mystery?
• This course presented apologetics as Christian philosophy. But it seems to me that the difference between philosophy and Christian philosophy is like the difference between a yo-yo and a Christian yo-yo.
Based on this course, I would say that apologetics is God in the abstract while the Gospel is God in the flesh. It is the latter that I seek.
Great message
O believe this this message must be heard by many. I loved it because you have to come without any been sided with any body to understand someone.
