Presenters include: Bill Kurtis: Clarence Darrow Keynote Address James Ellis: Darryl Atkins Capital Defense Attorney before the Supreme Court Ajitha Reddy: The use of IQ tests in jury trials Dr. Marla Sandys: Jury Interpretation of Evidence Relating to Mental Health Race to Execution Luncheon Bryan Stevenson: Effect of Atkins Below the Mason-Dixon Line Carol & Jordan Steiker: Impact of Atkins on Future Capital Cases Andrea Lyon: Challenges in Selecting Capital Juries for Mentally Retarded Clients Song Richardson: The Future of Atkins v. Virginia In the landmark case, Atkins v. Virginia, the Supreme Court held that there was a national consensus that the mentally retarded should be categorically excluded from the death penalty. The 2007 DePaul Law Review Symposium is focusing the application of the decision in Atkins and will discuss its many practical and theoretical implications. Additionally, as part of the Symposium, there will be a luncheon at which scenes from the documentary, “Race to Execution” will be viewed.
