There is no shortage of brilliant, dazzling thinkers in our time, but if you look at our society and our media, it really seems like there is a diminshed appreciation for them. I'm too young to remember it, but I've heard there was a time when deep conversation from qualified individuals was even occasionally tolerated on television. If you wonder where this spirit has retreated to, you have found its refuge.

Most episodes consist of an extended conversation on a stated topic (usually literary or philosophical) between a single guest and the host, Robert Harrison. Guests range from graduate students to eminent thinkers. Regardless of the guest, Harrison is their worthy companion in conversation. He seems to have an astonishing capacity to immediately formulate complex ideas and feelings into clear speech. The conversations are far from surface introductions for uninitiated listeners: the best episodes have a way of showing how the ideas discussed are timeless and alive so that at the end when you shut off your iPod you feel, at least for a while, that you have been altered by coming into contact with them.

OK, so there are some clunker episodes. Just like any conversation you might have with your smartest friends, occasionally the topic will be hokey or the discussion will bog down in a pretentious morass, but if that happens, just skip on to the next episode. I do reccomend giving every episode at least a shot. Some of the episodes I've enjoyed the most were ones I didn't initially think I would like. The contrary is also true ... so you just never know.

The show's title derives from its premise that opinions are earned through serious study and reflection. Tune in to broaden and enrich your own opinions.

So Great!

What a great variety of thinkers and subjects! Brining academia to the masses in a totally non-pretentious way.

Incomparably brilliant

More of conversations than interviews. Dr. Harrison is insightful in the way he leads and engages. After listening to the opening music many times I find it annoying. It is the sound equivalent to Chinese water torture.
