Description
In this course, Dr. Belcher introduces the early biblical history of Israel as recorded in the first five books of the Bible (the Pentateuch) and continued in the Conquest period. Dr. Belcher brings together historical and linguistic features of the original context with the interpretive interests and questions facing modern OT scholarship. Genesis through Joshua traces prominent thematic developments in the Pentateuch narrative, demonstrating a biblical and exegetical basis for a Reformed approach to main theological categories, such as the covenant, the church, and eschatology. Listeners will benefit from overviews of hot topics in the Church today, such as debates surrounding creation, hermeneutics, and the historicity of the Exodus and Conquest narratives.

Hopping through the Hexateuch
Dr. Belcher is to be congratulated for an engaging series on the Pentateuch (Torah) plus Joshua. He is able to show the continuity of the narrative - and he doesn't even get bogged down in Leviticus! His presentation is lucid and engaging. It is clear and easy to follow. He takes a scholarly approach, giving fair treatment of various academic perspectives although the rabbinic viewpoint is absent. Dr. Belcher, who is an ordained minister in the Presbyterian Church in America (PCA), holds a Reformed Protestant position.
Given the obvious time constraints, this is only a survey course; it cannot address anything in any appreciable depth.
The pacing is pretty good, although he lingers on bodily discharges (Leviticus 15) for perhaps 15-20 minutes, while he spends only 60 minutes for the entire book of Joshua.
The production quality is adequate, clearly not professionally done. There is a persistent scraping noise at the end of many sentences. There is also a lot of "noise" trying to pick up questions from the students. (This is evidently a recording of an actual class.)
The course would benefit greatly from a bibliography containing required reading and suggested readings. Lectures are good, but they can be greatly reinforced with a good reading list.
Overall, this is a good course, particularly useful to someone seeking a general understanding of the Old Testament (Tenakh) or someone seeking background to help prepare for Bible studies in the Old Testament. It is a required course in the Master of Arts in Religion curriculum at the Reformed Theological Seminary.
Love it!
Good audio quality for starters. Dr belcher does a great job articulating his thoughts- they are easy to understand. Good for even the armchair bible scholars! A wonderful commentary that all Christians and even nonchristians can enjoy!
