Description
Annette Gordon-Reed dashed down from the Pulitzer Prize luncheon in New York on Thursday, May 28, to accept the 2009 George Washington Book Prize for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. The winner of what The Washington Post styled "a literary triple crown" — which also included the National Book Award — Gordon-Reed was presented with a medal and $50,000 check from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, which co-sponsors the prize with Washington College and George Washington's Mount Vernon. The black-tie dinner at Mount Vernon honoring this year's three finalists was attended by about 170 people, including faculty, board members, students and dignitaries from the worlds of publishing, academia and politics.
