Description

Spanning the timeframe from centuries before Christ to the present day, Dr. Frame explores the intersection between philosophical and Christian theological reflection in the ancient Greeks, early Christian Fathers, Medieval Christianity, the Reformation, the Enlightenment, and post-Enlightenment periods. This course will help you understand the thought of major philosophical and theological thinkers, enabling you to become more conversant with what has developed in these areas over the centuries.

Hard to listen!

I am a fan of this topic, and especially like to compare the approaches of secular and religious traditions. While I have no doubt that Dr. Frame has a great deal to offer, and the lecture I heard was very approachable, the acoustics on this podcast are such that it sounds like he is about to swallow the mike, and it is therefore almost impossible to listen to.

Worth the time (even w/ bad recording)

I'll gladly give this lecture series 4 stars for its content, even though the recording quality is poor in parts (of Frame himself in 4-5 lectures, and of student questions in almost all).

Frame gives an even-handed analysis of most major phiosophical schools that have had bearing on Christian theology, from the ancient Greeks (beginning w/ Thales) to the present day (ending w/ Van Til and Plantinga among the orthodox, and process philosophy and ordinary language analysis among the less or non-orthodox).

Frame is open about following his mentor, Cornelius Van Til, in some important respects. He sees a strong rationalistic/irrationalistic dialectic in all non-Christian philosophies, which comes through loud and clear. What's not as obvious (until the end) but maybe more important is his "presuppositionalist" perspective that no philosophical position or worldview can get outside its own presuppositions--that those are foundational beliefs that control the way all subsequent reasoning is done or evidence is interpreted. (This is central to Van Til's apologetical method, and Frame is a cut of that cloth.)

Regardless of whether you're Reformed (or even simply Christian) in your worldview, this is a well-taught lecture series. Just be prepared to endure a few bad recordings.
