Description

In this course, Dr. Belcher introduces you to the biblical books of Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Job, and Lamentations. Combining Biblical exegesis with practical application, this course will not only help you attain vital knowledge about the books themselves, but will also empower you to embrace your place in the great story of the redemption of God’s people.

Worthwhile

Dr. Belcher provides a very good overview of poetic books from Tenach/Old Testament. His approach is basically to discuss the meaning of each such book (including Lamentations, which is normally studied in conjunction with Jeremiah). He is careful to discuss a variety of perspectives on the major topics, always respectfully although it is always clear what he believes and what he hopes his seminary students believe. As always, Dr. Belcher is easy to understand, careful not to lose the listener by being either too simple or too sophisticated. And as always, the production quality of the recording detracts from Dr. Belcher's lectures. The volume jumps around and there are frequent distracting background noises.

I thought that Dr. Belcher's treatment of Ecclesiastes was very good and his treatment of the Song of Solomon was phenomenal. However, I was disappointed by his treatment of the Psalms. It seemed to me that he spent too much time on the structure of the book and not enough time on how to get to the meaning of a psalm, e.g., using parallelism and genre.
