Description

The Stockyard Institute is a collaborative artist project and radical teaching organization in Chicago. It began in 1995 in the Back of the Yards community behind the abandoned Union Stockyards property to work with a group of gang members and support the development of a new experiemental middle school in the neighborhood. Our efforts have been to mobilize our energies, resources and an expanding network of artists, teachers, youth and friends to develop work throughout the city and internationally. We (here) have placed a handful of our audio experimentations and low watt radio segments. Audio and radio is a consistent tool for project development, community outreach, activism and archiving pedagogical strategies. The Stockyard Institute has positioned itself within a growing and constantly expanding effort in Chicago of alternative collaborative projects and multiuse sites. Our network of alternative sites and/or experimental outposts has extended our work outward, beyond the city. We are building temporary programs, collaborative workshops, exhibits and shared publications, in an exchange of energy, support and practice with a vast group of producers. They include an interdisciplinary membership of architects, educators, youth, designers, teachers, performers, growers, artists, students, writers, composers and others. The Stockyard Institute is aligned with many groups and organizations in Chicago and has a direct association in working with underserved youth, issues of experimental learning and pedagogy, public art and life in the city. This site is used for my courses in arts education and to place pieces for public use.
