Exceptional
I did not register for the course or read the assigned material.
This course might be called The Church and Philosophy in the Modern World. The unifying thread is the progression of modern philosophers and the impact they had on the church. Philosophers include Kant, Schleiermacher, Kierkegaard, Barth, and Bultmann.
Have you ever taken a course in a subject you were really interested in but you were disappointed in how the professor presented it? Well, this was just the opposite for me. I’m really not interested in modern philosophy and I find it difficult to follow but Dr. Hoffecker’s presentation was exceptional. Both his delivery and his scholarship are excellent. It compares favorably to The Teaching Company’s extensive library of philosophy courses but this course is oriented to the seminarian preparing for ministry in the contemporary Western society.
I’ve listened to three systematic theology classes, four Old Testament courses, four New Testament courses, and three other historical theology courses and this was by far the most challenging course for me. It really helps to have some understanding of modern theology starting with Hegel and Kant. Still, Dr. Hoffecker is so effective that it is worth the considerable effort required to follow this course.
At the very end of the course (in the Culture Wars section), his objectivity fades and he advocates his personal position more strongly, particularly with respect to homosexuality.
Excellent Lectures
I also didn't take the course or read the material. Dr. Hoffecker was most knowledgable and his presentation style was well organized. Overall this was an excellent course I think it is more than 10 years out of date which is a minus since this is a course on modern culture. The only reason I give it four stars instead of five is that I wanted Dr. Hoffecker to presonally engage the ideas he is presenting. What is HIS viewpoint and reponse to Bultman and others? That would have made for a livelier lecture series.
