Description

In Dr. Cara's examination of each of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), attention is given to overall structure, the thematic emphases of each Gospel, and the theological contribution of the Gospels to Scripture and Christian theology. Listeners are familiarized with the history of Gospels criticism and critical methodologies, while being equipped to defend a traditional approach to Scripture's authority. Dr. Cara will prepare you to answer challenging hermeneutical questions, ashe tackles thorny issues within Evangelical scholarship. These issues include developments in the interpretation of parables, the meaning of the Kingdom of God, traditional interpretations of the Sermon on the Mount, and different approaches to the Olivet Discourse.

Customer Reviews

Not a good presentation manner

The lecture style seemed rather disconnected. The lecturer appeared disorganized and didn't start from the overall picture down to the details in a coherent way. There is an abundance a parenthetical comments that disrput the flow. I listened to the first 5 lectures. Maybe if I listened further it would have gotten better. I'll try out the legacy course.

Excellent Treatment

Dr. Cara is to be congratulated on a very good course on the Gospels. His lectures on hermeneutics and the synoptic issues are particularly excellent; all serious New Testament students will benefit from these lectures. I hope that RTS publishes a course by Dr. Cara exclusively on hermeneutics. Also, I was challenged by the lectures on parables; I’ll need to think through them some more. Finally, the lecture linking the Last Supper with passages on the Passover in Mishnah really got my attention. For those students who are Jewish or are familiar with Jewish traditions, pay particular attention to the Four Questions.

Unfortunately, the recording production quality is poor. In particular, the volume is too low. It is as though the microphone were too far from Dr. Cara’s mouth. The production quality detracts from the excellent content.

The listener should be forewarned that, at times, Dr. Cara mocks perspectives other than his own by his tone of voice.
