"The Voices of the Chesapeake Bay Interview Project is created to help us further develop our 'sense of place.' The Voices Project is ongoing, inherently 'inclusive' and well-rounded, giving us the ability to see our bio-region, the Chesapeake Bay watershed, from a variety of perspectives and points of view. With this ability we can fully and truly appreciate this incredible place called the Chesapeake Bay." - Michael Buckley, Project Director

Danny McCready, Tangier Island, VA - Pt 1 of 3 | Tangier Island Virginia is located 12 miles west of the historical waterfront community of Onancock Virginia on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. A different way of life; absolutely. Tangier Island residents have no vehicles to travel about on the Island. Transportation on the Island consists of Golf Carts and Bikes. Visitors can rent bikes at Tangier Dock upon arriving on the Island. As far as golf carts, ask when you call for reservations at your local bed and breakfasts or ask your boat captain. Tangier Islanders take pride in their Chesapeake Bay heritage and have maintained a simpler way of life to some. On the other hand, lifestyles of Tangier Island are diminishing due to the waterman of the Chesapeake Bay struggling today to keep alive working the waters of the Chesapeake Bay. Due to tight regulations and restrictions placed by the Commonwealth of Virginia many Tangier Island youths will have to seek employment off of Tangier Island, as independent Tangiermen working the waters of the Chesapeake Bay is much different from days gone by. Life on Tangier Island is quiet and serene, residents are warm and friendly. Tangier Island, itself, is a nature's wonderland. Visiting Tangier Island is stepping back in time. The atmosphere is tranquil, and the Chesapeake Bay breeze that blows offers sweet memories as you travel throughout the Island. We sugguest that you do not leave the island before you visit the Tangier History Museum. Tangier Island Transportation by boat, from Onancock, Virginia and Crisfield, Maryland, is available to visitors and residents, alike. http://www.tangierisland-va.com/island/ | 11/1/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
