Lisa: Hi, Yo. Yo: I would like to ask you some questions. Lisa: Unh. Yo: What did you find the differences in… differences of school in Japan and in America? Lisa: Ok, uh… in the university in UNP I haven’t noticed a lot of differences. One difference I’ve noticed is lifestyle that in Japan, many of you live in at home with your parents or maybe in your apartment. But in America, we usually live in a dorm, so we stay on campus. So that’s the difference. But really there seem to be a lot of similarities, things that are same with, um…how people interact and spend time together when go to different classes. Uh, I see a lot of interaction or talking with students and professors here really fun and that’s really wonderful. Yo: Yes. Lisa: And that’s really wonderful. So I was… I also fortunate, I’ve got to visit an after school daycare for 6 and 7 year olds. And there I have noticed a lot of differences. Uh, it was really fun and the kids were beautiful. Uh and I’ve noticed that in Japan, children when they arrive they take off their shoes. Yo: Yes. Lisa: Yeah, I love that! We need that in Minnesota! Yo: Really? Lisa: Yes, cause we have dirty shoes with snow or even in the spring with mad, so I wish we did do that. I’ve also noticed that many of the kids put on slippers to go to the bathroom. Yo: Yeah. Lisa: Yeah, it’s great idea! But we don’t have that (idea). Uh, also sitting on the floor Yo: Yes. Lisa: With this low table is very practical. Uh, I tried but my legs gotta a little bit sore… Yo: Oh… Lisa: Ha ha… but it was still fun. Yo: Yes. Lisa: So I think that …uh …not having chairs is very…it’s a good idea. Because our kids in America rock… in their chairs sometimes. Yo: Oh… that’s not good. Lisa: That’s not good…so… Yo: Uh, finally, uh… could you please give us message for the students who will come… who will go to (the) Minnesota next year. Lisa: Uh-huh, sure. Well, I would like to tell those students that I am excited to welcome them to Minnesota that I love every year finding new personalities and new students, and it’s so fun to get to know new Japanese people. Yo: Yes. Lisa: I’ve worked with Japanese students for 11 years that I’m always learning about the Japanese culture. And every person I meet I learn something new. So, I’m really looking forward to meeting more people and so are the host families that they are really excited every year to welcome Japanese students. Yo: Thank you very much! Lisa: Yes, thank you, Yo.
今回のスクリプトはこちら↓↓ Koyori: Hello Shown: Hello Koyori: How are you? Shown: I’m Okay. How are you? Koyori: I’m fine too, thank you. It’s very cold today. Shown: Yeah. Very cold. Koyori: eah, and this this year is ending soon and thinking back about this year, what is your strongest memory? Shown: My strongest memory, Well, I graduated from college this year. Koyori:Oh, this year! Shown:Yeah, in, December! Koyori:Oh! Congratulation! Shown:Thank you. So, I graduated last year but, I came back to Japan this year after collage…so coming back and driving in the real deep snow when I go back. That was the good memory. Yuuki:My strongest memory is… I went to Keiwa University and I saw a speech contest. And one of our student Koyori san won a Ganbatta-de-syo! Koyori:Oh, yeah… Yuuki:Yes. That’s my strongest memory. Melodie:Strongest memory, actually that have happened recently. Last year, I have.. I have to tell you about last year to compare this year. So last year, it was my son’s first Christmas happyokai at his preschool at his yochien. And he was …it was very dramatic experience for him. When the curtain opened, he saw all the people, he panicked! He he turned around he turned around and he was facing the back and crying. Koyori:He was nervous? He was very unhappy and we were very worried about him. But last weekend was his second happyokai and my husband and I were worried and we were sitting in wondering. And the curtains opened and he sang and he danced and he was smiling. And it was such a big difference we were so relived because ……. we were worried that the same thing might be happened. But actually he was very comfortable and happy performing on the stage…with everywhere. So that I think that’s the best…strongest memory I have. David:I will have to say that’s the strongest memory is the birth of my second child last February. Koyori:Oh, Congratulation!! Thank you. He was supposed to be born on my birthday. But he was three days late. So, finally he was born on February the 21st. Koyori:Wow! David:Thank you. Koyori:What what is his name? David:His name is Subaru. Koyori:Subaru. Oh, good name! David:That’s Subaru. Koyori:Wow, very cute! David:Thank you. Koyori:So, it is your strongest memory of this year? David:Yeah, probably. | 10/12/22 | 無料 | iTunes で見る |

Momoko: Today, I want to ask you some questions about Japan. This trip… I know this trip is for the first time you came to Japan. Lisa: Yes. Momoko: So, what was the first impression of Japan? Lisa: I was, in my first impression, was how helpful people are. When I arrived at the train station in Tokyo, people came up to me, and wanted to do help me find my train. Also people are very polite in bowing, giving me my credit card or something very helpful and very polite. Momoko: I see. So, in Japan, where did you go? Lisa: Well, I arrived on Friday, and since then, I have gone to an onsen and ocean was wonderful! That was really beautiful. I saw the sunset in the Sea of Japan. It was so beautiful. And I also visited Murakami. The old… it’s kind of style town of Japan, it was very beautiful. And then, I went to Shibata. Momoko: Shibata city? Lisa: Shibata city, which was very nice all of the rice fields were really beautiful to see. And it’s fun to be here in fall because that’s when you harvest your rice, so that’s been special and fun to learn about. Momoko: That’s good. Lisa: And then next weekend, I will go to Tokyo. Momoko: Oh, really? Tokyo! Lisa: Yes, I will spend two days in Tokyo before going back to America. Momoko: That’s good. Lisa: Yeah, it’s since been wonderful. *****Interview 2****************************** Momoko: What did you eat in Japan? Lisa: I have eaten so much and I’ve loved it. I was little nervous about Japanese food before coming, but I really love Japanese food. I’ve had yakesoba. Momoko: Yakisoba? Lisa: Yakisoba? Thank you. Yakisoba, in fact last night, I helped my host sister make noodles with cabbage, carrots, meat, so I helped to make yakisoba. It was very fun. I love Niigata rice, the sticky rice. Momoko: Thank you. Lisa: Oh, it’s delicious. And I’m using my chopsticks, so I’m doing my best with the chopsticks. I’ve also had tempura, which I really love, and chou cream, the dessert very sweet and very delicious. Also I had niku… jaga? Is that right? Momoko: Yes that’s right. Lisa: Nikujaga, the beef with carrots and some potatoes, it was delicious. I love that. Momoko: I love it, too. Lisa: Do you? Do you make it at home? Momoko: Ah, sometimes. Lisa: Okay. I would like to know how to make nikujaga. And of course miso soup. It’s fun to have miso soup and rice for breakfast. Very different from serial in America, so miso is very warm and salty, it’s wouderful for breakfast. Momoko: So, you ate a lot? Lisa: Yes, a lot. I love Japanese food. Momoko: Thank you. Shiori: Hello. How are you? Bethany: Okay. How about you? Shiori: I’m (a) little sleepy. Bethany: Sleepy, Okay. Shiori: Today, I’d like to know about your country. Bethany: Okay. Shiori: Where are you from? Bethany: I’ m from USA. Pittsburgh in the USA. Shiori: Pittsburgh. Please tell me about your country. Bethany: Okay, okay. Anything specific that you want to know. Shiori: I want to know what…what is your favorite thing or culture or something. Bethany: Okay, okay. I think that the point about America in culture or life in America that I like the most is that there is lots of choice for everyone. And everyone has choice, choice is about everything where you go to school, where you live or carrier you want or I think that if somebody works hard and if somebody does the best they can, or makes a goal for themselves. Then there is a possibility for it to happen. I think the society is opened enough for choices and to become reality. I think that’s all I like the most. Shiori: Anything else… do you like in your country? Bethany: I like the size. Shiori: Size, big!! Bethany: I like the fact that like there are of course there are towns where many people and shopping but you can also find places where there are no people and no signs of people or there is one house and nothing and one house. That’s space the fill in the space is the something that I miss what I’m in Japan. The everything fills very close and very there is the nature in Japan. There is the nature in Japan but it’s intermingled with human life and things. So, I miss that space, I think. Shiori: Thank you very much. Bethany: Sure, my pleasure. | 10/12/16 | 無料 | iTunes で見る |

Zjina is located in the lower reaches of the river basin, so the river… the… actually starts from the Gracious, Gracious is the very top, high mountains. The melt(ed) water from Gracious and the snow will flow through many oasis cities, finally it’s flowed to Zjina. In Zjina, there is the forest, it is in the middle, there is the actually it is very famous for the forest of the trees it’s called… it’s called “Hunan”, it’s kind of the poplar, poplar trees. Haward: Yes, of course. Momoko: So, have you ever taken part in some activity or events in Japan? Haward: Yes. Actually just last month, my wife and I are building a new house, so we took part in a traditional ground breaking ceremony. Momoko: Ground breaking? Haward: Yes. Priest came to our land, and read a special prayer, and then we had a ceremony to dig in the ground for the first time. Momoko: That’s good.Thank you. Haward: You’re welcome. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Marie: Hi, John. John: Hi, there. Nice to see you. Marie: Ah, are you interested in Japanese culture? John: Yes, very much. Marie: Oh, really? Oh, have you ever taken part in Japanese culture? John: Yeah, many times. Yeah, all different types of events, really. My… my biggest memory of a Japanese cultural event comes from Nagano Prefecture. I lived near Lake Suwa, Suwa-ko, and I took part in the Onbashira. Marie: Onbashira? John: Event. That’s a famous event from Nagano Prefecture. Do you know Onbashira? Marie: No. What is Onbashira? John: Umm…it’s a traditional Japanese event where people in the Suwa area, they take long trees, they cut the tree down, and they take the tree to a temple, and during the journey they must pull the tree over mountains, across rivers, and then, they push the tree down a mountain, and the men try to ride on the wood, and it can be very dangerous. Marie: Don’t wear clothes? John: Oh,well…they wear the special uniform. Each area has a different color, and my area in Okaya was yellow. Marie: Yellow? John: So, I wore a yellow uniform. Other areas were red and blue, so it shows the differences, and so taking part in an activity, meant that I had to wear a yellow uniform everyday. So, my wife said I look(ed) like a banana! A banana on a piece of wood! Marie: Good experience. John: It was little dangerous at the time. All the people who took part there were friendly, but some participants actually died. Every time they have the Onbashira, every seven years, and some participants actually fall down in the water or have an injury or some died. So, it can be little bit frightening. | 21 | VideoLesson 17 Part 2 | Menu 前回に引き続き、小さいころの夢について聞いてみました。 Nao What did you want to be in your childhood? Ah, when I was a little girl, I wanted to be a cookery teacher, cooking teacher. Cooking teacher. Cooking teacher, because my mother used to teach cooking in the evening. Um…so when I saw her teaching cooking, oh, “I want to be a cooking teacher” as well. Yeah. Ah, what, ah, what did, your dream changed? Yes, my dream changed. I’m not a cooking teacher. I’m an English teacher. So obviously it’s changed. But I’m so interested in being a, kind, teacher. Ah, teacher! Yes, yes. Um…when you were in elementary school, junior high school, did you want to be a teacher? Well let me see, mainly I didn’t think about it so much, but when I became a college student, there was a course to be a junior high school teacher. So I used a course to be a qualified a teacher, and…it was ah, very difficult to pass public school teacher’s exam, but I tried many times, maybe three times I failed, and it (was) forth time I finally passed (the) exam, then I could become a teacher. But maybe in the elementary school, junior high school, I was not thinking to be a teacher. Yeah, but I was a o…in junior high school, I started to learn English. Ah, English. And I am so interested in learning English. Um…I thought it will, well, my, um…and learning English gives ah, gives me kind of entry to different world do you see? So um…I’ve thought that, when I become a… college student, I can learn English and also I can teach English, that would be really nice job to learn to be an English teacher. Ah, so you now an English teacher, do you have fun for the job? Yes, yes. I like teaching very much. Ah, when I was 30 years old, I quit ah…working in the junior high school and I went to England to study more at the post of graduate student, then I came back, now I’m not teaching in the junior high school, but, yeah, I like teaching university or college student(s) now, yes. OK, thank you. Thank you very much. Mizu What did you want to be in your childhood? I wanted to be a baker. Baker! Or I wanted to be a pastry chef. I liked cake, I really like to bake cake and cookies. When did you start to think(ing) to be a teacher? Ah, teacher…um…junior high school, ah~, when I was 12, 13 years old. I met a wonderful English teacher and I liked her and I wanted to be like her. Ah~, that’s nice. Are you having fun with teaching English? Uh-uh, uh-uh. I am. What makes you happy when you are teaching English? When students bring some questions and I answer, and then they suddenly make this beauty and smiley faces and very smiling “thank you”, and I really like that moment. And then also they try to speak English to me and make a conversation and that… it is also a fun moment and interesting really, I like that moment too. That’s fun. OK, thank you. | 22 | VideoLesson 17 Part 1 | Menu このレッスンでは小さいころの夢について聞いてみました。 Key Expression What did you want to be in your childhood? John What did you want to be in your childhood? Well, that’s a good question. I think I had many dreams when I was a child. When I was a young boy in England, I think first of all I wanted to be a sports man like every boy to be a successful, soccer player, for example. And then, later, I loved to look at books with the ships in and I loved old ships and I loved to draw old ships. I think maybe for a short time I wanted to be an artist. But I wasn’t, I wasn’t very good. But I loved that. Then, oh…for a short time, I, I remember watching a very popular TV series about a hospital. And I thought, oh…I would love to become a doctor. But then I discovered it was very difficult to study to become a doctor. So I gave up that idea. Um…what else…um…then later asI grew up and I went to junior high school, I became interested in languages. And I loved to study French, German and Latin. Do you know Latin? It’s a very old language. But I really was interested in languages. Not so good, my results were not so good. But, I think, my dream then in the future was to have some connection with language. Maybe to teach language or to…study more languages myself in order to become multilingual, for example. So that was the last dream I had and it’s now, come true! That’s nice, isn’t it? Are you having fun with teaching English now? Yeah. I really, I am actually. Since I came here, in April, I found that the students are, ah, very enthusiastic about English. Um…and the level is a little higher than my old college. Um…I really loved my old students but my new students are a little different, ah, university students. How, how different? Well, I, my old students when I was in at college in Nagano, they were very friendly but some of the English levels were very low. When I was teaching, I came out. “I have a pen, do you have a pen?” “I have a dog, do you have a dog?” Bhhhhhhhh (He don’t remember what he said.) But now I can teach more interesting things. Um…for example, in my academic English classes, I can teach a little bit about business, in different countries, which is very interesting and very important for the future studies next year. So now, I think, I’m having fun because the, it’s, the more…bra bra bra, variety…in the studying, not just “I have a dog” Thank you. You’re welcome. Bethany What did you want to be in your childhood? My childhood. Um…I don’t remember from my childhood, my very young, like 6 years old, 7 years old, I don’t re…I don’t think I was thinking about a job yet. But probably from about around junior high school age, I started to want to be a CIA agent. CIA agent…what?? CIA is the, Central Intelligence Agency in the USA, so it’s like a spy, a spy. And um…so I imagined to be, or police, police force FBI or CIA, some kind of spy, secret police. Ah. I had that, idea until probably…late high school, early college, and then, I understood politically how, CIA politically, does not do good thing in my opinion, my political views changed, or became more solidified, so I changed my mind. And through university, I realized I wanted to be a teacher. Ah, teacher. English teacher? Um…during university it wasn’t clear what, I know what I want to teach, and I wasn’t clear what I want to teach. So then I came to Japan, um…and I had the chance to try teaching English and I enjoyed that, so I stayed. Ah, so you have fun with your job now? Yes, I enjoy my job very much. I have a great job and I’m very happy to be an English teacher here, yeah. Oh, that’s great nice! OK, thank you. Thank you. | 09/11/25 | 無料 | iTunes で見る |

Key expression Did you have any trouble when you were a high school student? スクリプトあります。こちらからどうぞ~^^♪ Script Did you have any trouble when you were a high school student? Well…not especially, I didn’t have any trouble with bullying which is a major problem you might be telling us about that in a minute. Oh…my first memory of high school and trouble would be, thinking back to when I studied physics. Physics. Yeah, studying energy and all that sort of thing. Am…and that was because I really didn’t enjoy studying that class, mainly because I was terrified. Terrified? Terrified to stone of the teacher at that time. Yes, I think the reason why I was terrified from the beginning, was my brother, before me, my elder brother had told me about this teacher. And so I had, kind of, you know, built him up and worried about this teacher even before I got to the high school. Right. So when I was in his class, I was, you know, already terrified. But he was, actually, very terrifying as a teacher. He’s just loud, would get very angry, if he was handing the homework back in a book, even if you’d done it well, he would throw it across the room. At you? Yeah, on to your desk. And the book would…fu fu fu fu fu like this, disintegrate. He was just, he was right he was rude when I think about it. Yeah, I’ll say. And he was annoying, but mainly terrifying, we were just, I and other students too, just, you know, really terrified of this guy. He never hit, hit me, but I do remember him you know, he would get student by the neck, ahh By the neck?! By the neck! Is that OK at school? Well he did it. You know, maybe now he wouldn’t get away with it. Ahh! And he, ah. Terrible! Oh, I think I remember him going like that on somebody too. He was very severe. Yeah, I’ll say. So needless to say, I had trouble passing. And did you pass? No, no. I think for physics, I failed and…maybe even got a U-grade. “U” means “ungraded”. But I should’ve got a “T” for “terrified”. So… “Scared”, “S” for scared. Yes. So unfortunately, yeah, I had bad experience and I had trouble studying at all. Yes, also my physic teacher was like that. Oh, OK, OK. But I did, I did, you know, have, problem with, with the other students. Did you have any trouble in high school? Yeah, yeah. I was, in a high school, I was very shy that was a skinny guy, you know. Sounds like me now?? Sort of kept away to himself, I had my group of friends we were all very quiet. And I had trouble, sort of, avoiding this big gorilla like muscular guy who thought it was his duty to pick on me, bully me. And so I had, it was really difficult because he was, in fact…, in, the same home room as me…because his last name, first letter and my last name, first letter were quite close in the alphabet. So I had a hard time, you know, not meeting him. Right, right. And ah…usually I tried to walk on the other side of the hall or sit on the other side of the room, or you know, keep my head down because inevitably he tried to take a, what we wouldn’t, necessarily swing me all the time, but he would say, you know, verbally abuse me. That hurts more than physical sometime. Sometime, it does. But, I means, once he actually did hit me and I was so shocked and surprised that, you know, I just didn’t want to have anything to do with him. But strangely enough we were both in the chess club, after school. Perfect! And I ended up the playing him. OK, And almost always, Did you lose? I beat him. That’s why! Maybe, maybe. No, almost always, not all the time, but almost always, I was able to beat him at chess. OK. And after that, I’d just run. Fortunately he lived, you know, in, one part of the town and I lived in the other p | 09/10/24 | 無料 | iTunes で見る |

Ah sometimes I had trouble in my English lessons when I was a high school student. Oh really? Yes. I had a lot of trouble writing and spelling. Spelling? Yes. Is it difficult for native English speakers? Not everyone, but it is difficult for some people and I had a lot of trouble spelling. Even now, when I’m writing or using a computer, I have trouble spelling and I use spell check on my computer a lot. Ah. Do you care something to correct the skill? (Did you care something to improve the skill?) I tried many things, but nothing worked for me. OK. Thank you very much. You’re welcome. Mizu Did you have any trouble when you were a high school student? I did. Tell me more about it. Oh I had trouble studying. Studying? For tests. For test? Yes, because I belonged to a club activity. I played basketball. So I didn’t have time to study. Ah I see. How did you overcome that problem? Ah I had to study until 1 O’clock, 2 O’clock in the morning. Yes. I kept studying, studying, studying. In diary (usually) when you had a club activity and you have to study, how did you balance? Well I finished my club activity at 6 O’clock and I came home and had dinner with my family, and then I was really tired, but then I had to study, so I was forcing myself to study and sit in front of … Desk? Exactly. That’s hard to study It was very hard. Ah it’s very good thing(s) to your future…? Right, because I learned how to balance the club activity with studying. So it was a very… Very good experience, yes. Thank you very much. You’re welcome. Tina Did you have any trouble when you were a high school student? Ah, yes, I had a lot of trouble. When I first went to high school, I had trouble finding my classes, so our school was very big. It was only one story, not a high building, right, and everything was very far away, so one class would be on one side of the school, another class would be on all the way on the other side. And I was a new student, so I couldn’t find my class, yeah. And ah another problem I had, ah, I had trouble walking in the hallway, because there were many big students, very tall boys, you know, like football boys. And they would knock everybody when they were walking, and many times I was bumped or I dropped my books on the floor yeah. So I had a lot of trouble. Did he (feel) sorry to you? No. Nobody said sorry, because, you know, the football boys are kind of like kings in the school, and they, you know, walking around like a king and everybody else is, you know, nothing, so yeah, and new students are looked down at, you know, they are not respected. Yeah so everybody has a hard time ah has trouble in the first year, I think. Yeah, ah first year students are often picked on, picked on, ah… the big students like to make jokes or tease the new students, yeah, sometimes the boys would take a new boy and throw him in the garbage can. Eee… (Wow!) It’s really terrible, isn’t it. Yeah, yeah, so we have lots of trouble. OK. Thank you. Special Thanks Brown-sensei, Suzuki-sensei, Koyama-sensei | 09/10/22 | 無料 | iTunes で見る |

Yes, occasionally I’ve had trouble. Let me tell you one troubling experience I had when I lived in Kanagawa. Ah. At that time, I had my first car which was a Nissan car, very nice car, and I parked it outside my apartment. Uh-huh. And I went home, slept, next day, I woke up and I went to my car that I parked outside and there was a big orange label attached to the mirror on the outside of this car. It was from the police. It was a lock. I couldn’t take it off. I had trouble taking it off. So I, there was a message on this orange label lock. That said you have parked illegally. Illegally? Must not park here. Ah. You must come to the local police station to have this taken off. OK. So at first I had trouble driving this car to the police station because I was so embarrassed, because this big orange lock was on the side of my car, so I had to drive to police station, with the big orange sign on. I was very ashamed about that. Ah. At police station, ah they obviously took it off, but they said that I had to go to court to pay a fine or something. A few days later, so I was very worried about this, and so I was worried for a few days. So what happened? After a few days, I got a letter, came through the door, from the police. In English? Ah… I think my wife translated it for me. OK. It may have been, I forget actually it might have been English because they knew I was from England. Anyway I went to the police station, and before I got to the police station, there was a police man waiting at the door outside of the police station. For you? Yeah, he was waiting for me. I was walking up to the door, uhm, what’s gonna happen? And he said “It’s ok you are Greg Twomey, because you are English, a foreigner, probably you didn’t understand about illegal parking so you don’t have to go to the court. Be careful, you can go home.” So I was very pleased, yeah. So you didn’t have any trouble paying. I did actually have any trouble, I just had, ah, had trouble driving back it was just embarrassing situation. Ah OK. Well I’ve had trouble with a parking problem too, but it was here in Niigata. Yes. When I was living here, about a year, I didn’t speak much Japanese, but I was working at an eikaiwa by the city office. I… it was my car actually, I parked my girlfriend’s car in front and I went up stairs to the second floor to teach my classes and when I came back, my car was gone. Oh… And I didn’t know what to do, I had trouble understanding, you know, what was happening. So ah… fortunately the eikaiwa owner’s husband, Japanese, and he speaks English too, so the police had chalked a message, where the car was. And he read the message and together he and I went to central police station but unfortunately, ah… the police officer, that we encountered ah… was not very helpful, in fact he was, you know, pretty nasty about it. Was he young or old? Ah he was, you know, late middle ages and he insisted that I show my passport, of course, now, even then I knew by reading the handbook that Niigata provides for foreign residents that I didn’t have to carry my passport I have, ah, was is called a gaikokujin-card, and it has my picture on it and my address, so I knew that I only had to carry that, but this policeman was, you know, very insistent that I had to show him both the passport and the card, and so, you know, we argued about this. He had trouble understanding this for some reasons.
