Following his massively successful remix of Art of Trance's "Madagascar," Ferry Corsten released "Out of the Blue," which fully confirmed the fact that he understood the making of a great trance anthem. The song itself isn't that complex or innovative, beginning with a forward-moving set of 4/4 beats — a high-hat snare, bass beats, mid-frequency synth riffs — that continues to build until the lulling moment when all the rhythm seems to fall out. A calming ambient synth melody eclipses these rhythms, followed by the song's signature synth hook and its underlying snare roll explosion. This is anthemic trance by the books, and Corsten doesn't do much to convince you otherwise. Like other massive trance hits such as ATB's "9PM (Til I Come)," Bedrock's "Heaven Scent," Paul van Dyk's "For an Angel," the melody is really all that matters. In the case of "Out of the Blue," it's hard to deny the fact that Corsten lays down a truly ethereal, sugary sweet melody that few can resist humming along to.
