Album Review

Continuing their slow crawl toward middle age, Linkin Park opt for moody over metallic on A Thousand Suns, their fifth album. A clear continuation of 2007’s Minutes to Midnight, A Thousand Suns also trades aggression for contemplation, burying the guitars under washes of chilly synthesizers — a sound suited for a rap-metal band that no longer plays metal but hasn’t shaken off the angst, choosing to channel inward instead of outward. So few rap-metal bands have chosen to embrace their age that it’s easy to admire Linkin Park’s decision not to shy away from it, even if their mega-success gives them the luxury to pursue musical risks. The subdued rhythms, riffs, and raps of A Thousand Suns maintain a brooding mood.

Apocalypse of the Past

Linkin Park have dared to do what most bands are too afraid to do, change.
As a follow up to 2007's Minutes to Midnight, A Thousand Suns follows the theme of an apolocalypse, of the goverment, of technology, of life and Linkin Park past has been forgotten to make this masterpiece. As an avid fan, I have stuck with every record and I like to hear that Linkin Park have grown up from the angsty teenagers to the people who give a damn about what goes on in the world around them.
Mike Shinoda has said that the album must be listened in full to understand the concept of the album and I agree completely. The interludes in this album certainly set the mood from the haunting intro of The Requiem to the Japanese soulfulness of Jornada Del Muerto (as Mike Shinoda sings the lyrics to The Catalyst in Japanese) and although there are about nine full 'songs' on this album, it wouldn't need more or any less. When They Come For Me is definetly a highlight in the band's career as they have experimented with many different instruments and noises to make a very exotic arabian sounding track which sets the perfect setting for one of Mike Shinoda's most intense raps ever revealing his thoughts on the past and how they have become tired of people whining about how they have changed making a reference to the album Hybrid Theory. Wretches and Kings is another highlight as a heavy distortion track and for everyone who missed Chester's screams, Blackout is the perfect song showcasing Linkin Park's lead singer's ability to pull off the most melodic voice or the most powerful scream. Waiting for the End premieres a new style of rapping from Mike Shinoda in an almost ragga style rap gelling perfectly with Chester's soulful singing.
A Thousand Suns has bought out the best sounds from each individual member of the band to make this epic explosive of a classic. I would almost go as far as naming this my new favourite Linkin Park album. Linkin Park have officially made an album defying genres unless you go around telling people about the fantastic new electro-punk-synth-pop-experimental-alternate-ragga-rock album you have just heard. Five stars from me.

Open your mind...

This album is in no way a collection of singles, that make it on your workout playlist.
Consider it as one large 48 minute song that should only be played in sequence. Lock yourself in a dark room with some decent headphones or speakers and listen to it as if it was a movie. I guaranty that if you can open you mind and accept change, you will enjoy this.

There are very few artists out there that have attempted to do this, and I doubt many would even have the talent or guts to do so.

I feel Jordy Kasko summed it up best in his review...

"It is an epic quest, a genuinely apocalyptic force of nature, an album that doesn't need to be classified by songs or singles or sales... in other words, it is true art. And it is one HELL of an album."

They have gone in the wrong direction completely

Minutes to midnight i was able to handle only just because they still had some hard songs on there still. but thousands suns i cant handle, you cant even call it rock anymore, disapointing

Sounds more like experiment tracks

Biography

Formed: 1996 in Los Angeles, CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Although rooted in alternative metal, Linkin Park became one of the most successful acts of the early 2000s by welcoming elements of hip-hop, modern rock, and atmospheric electronica into their music. The band's rise was indebted to the aggressive rap-rock movement made popular by the likes of Korn and Limp Bizkit, a movement that paired grunge's alienation with a bold, buzzing soundtrack. Linkin Park added a unique spin to that formula, however, focusing as much on the vocal interplay between singer...
