The Dark Horse
'Happy Ending' is like a pair of Adidas three-stripes - a bit retro but comfy as hell. The Phoenix Foundation bring their simple, yet elegant off-beat songs to another level with interesting arrangements and great lyrics. 'Happy Ending' has all the ingredients to keep you coming back for more, the 'Dark Horse' of Wellington music is here to stay! Stand out tracks: 'Bleaching Sun', 'Gandalf', '40 years', 'Irrelevant Noise', 'Pure Joy', 'No One Will Believe Me When I'm Dead'.

Personally I tend to separate my music into the background type and the OMG!GIVEMEATTENTION type, but this album functions well in both camps. There's enough variety on the album to please almost everybody yet it's still distinctively The Phoenix Foundation and definitely very like-able. Favourites include the climaxes (and the build up to them) in Pure Joy and Slumber Party and the groovy instrumental Omerta.
