Graham Reid sums it up for me at www.elsewhere.co.nz

"This young singer-songwriter from Tauranga came to my attention a few weeks ago when I was asked if I would write a bio to accompany the release of this, his debut album. I get a few such requests but only ever take on someone whose music impresses me -- and a quick check at Thompson's MySpace page told me all I needed to know: the guy has a way with an intelligent lyric and a memorable song. He is a real singer-songwriter (by that I mean in the tradition of Bob Dylan, James Taylor, Don McLean and Paul Simon, not one of your alt.country types) and he augments his guitar-framed music with a small band and some discreetly placed strings. He also cuts a wide swathe lyrically from gentle ballads of personal emotions (with hook-hard choruses) to fat-back band workouts where he tosses questions at you. Songs like Look the Other Way ("you can look the other way . . . but you can never say you didn't know") also show he's a writer who has a social conscience -- which he doesn't batter you with but uses as just another aspect of musical personality. Luke Thompson has already had radio success with a couple of low-key singles, but this mature and confident album suggests he's bigger than the three minute song and is in for the long haul. For that we should all be very happy." Written by Graham Reid - my favourite NZ music critic - at www.elsewhere.co.nz

Talent on show...

Luke Thompson's debut 'Here on the Ground' is an album that delivers surprise and pleasure! This guy is the complete package - musical ability (guitar and voice) that hints at a genetic advantage honed with dedication and application; wonderful songs that grow and develop with each listen; and an album that delivers first class production along with supporting musicianship that deliver that 'wow' factor! 'Here on the Ground' will stay near the top of my most played list and I look forward to following the career of another outstanding NZ talent...

Heart and Soul

This is a beautifully written and recorded album that is perfect for listening to on those long drives or on a lazy Sunday morning. Its a little bit quirky but only in an attractive way that draws you a little bit closer to the personality that wrote these songs. A wonderfully intimate voice that draws you into the song and what Luke Thompson is saying. I would recommend this album to anyone of any age, if you love music you will love this.

Biography

Born: New Zealand

Years Active: '00s

A New Zealand-born singer/songwriter, Luke Thompson was an immediate success upon the release of his first album, 2007's Here on the Ground. His discovery at a festival led to a scholarship year at his choice of music school; Thompson then met producer Nik Manders and convinced him to produce a single that the young artist had been working on as a school assignment. The single led to a grant for a second work, which in turn led to a deal that would allow him to record his debut full-length. Bolstered...
