The best in 18 years

The most inventive, stirring and uplifting set of songs U2 have produced since 'Achtung Baby'. Its as astonishing that any band can produce a record this good 30 years into their career than it is that some people who claim to like U2 can give this 1 star. Its fabulous, and 'Magnificent' is as good as any song the band have ever produced.

Worth the wait

High quality & versatility that goes with endurance is what makes this band the best in the world. The Joshu Tree defined them, despite some great songs before and after that. But this album is as varied as it is special. The highlight is Moment of Surrender, worth the price of the album on its own. The quality of the music is a real step up on other albums, with Edge continuuing to be a master of his craft. Larry Mullen Jnr reckons this is an album to listen to and he's right! They get better and better as they get older.

U2 fans who are longing for a return to the exuberant days of The Joshua Tree are going to be disappointed with this album. The booming bass underpinning and more "bluesy" feel to most of the songs makes this album a lot darker than it's predecessors. There's also more depth to the music than usual. One normally expects flashy soundscape from U2, but there is a great deal of subtle background instrumentation in the slower songs (probably Brian Eno's influence). There is only one worthless song on the album, the Rolling Stones clone "Stand Up Comedy". For a band that's been going for three decades, that's not bad going...

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands of the '80s. They were rock & roll crusaders during an era of synthesized pop and heavy metal, equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional,...
