Album Review

If ever there was an ideal candidate for a holiday album it’s Susan Boyle, the reality TV show contestant who caused a sensation with her pretty, old-fashioned performance of “I Dreamed a Dream” in 2009. If ever there was a genre that calls for old-fashioned prettiness it’s the holiday album, a genre that cares not for the whims of fashion, a genre where predictability is cherished. For the most part, The Gift is indeed predictable in its sound — a continuation of the glassy, stately march of I Dreamed a Dream — and songs, relying on carols, not secular seasonal tunes. Well, that’s not entirely true. There is a very, very large exception to that rule and that is the inclusion of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah,” and Neil Finn’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” These three modern standards are given the same somnolent treatment as the rest of the record and popped right into the thick of The Gift without explanation. Of course, since they sound like as the rest of the record, they don’t necessarily stand out, they merely meld into the album, providing an appropriately tasteful soundtrack to any holiday occasion you may choose.

Oh Susan, you need to rediscover the dream

Susan Boyle is a newcomer in the world of high-profit music-making. She is a valuable commodity, the dynamite sensation who stunned us with raw talent, sure musical feel, and that soaring voice. What does the global company fortunate enough to "own" this voice do with such talent? Well, apparently they play safe. They carefully define her market, and limit her opportunities to step out.

This is a pleasant album. But it is not as good as her first, when we might have hoped it would be better. Susan Boyle is all about courage - the ability to take the jeers of the sceptical crowd and judges and "sock it to them", with interest added!

There are some risks taken in this album: Perfect Day, Hallelujah, and Don't Dream. It is these that pay off, contrary to early music critics' reviews. In the first two in particular, we hear her emotion and hints of her power; just enough to make the album worthwhile. Some critics have written 'what does she know of the themes behind these songs?'. Rubbish! She is an artist who has had her own hard road and suffering to boot. Does every actor have to have personal experience of they stories they portray? Do we pan them for this?

But the remainder of the album...a Christmas album?! Oh no, Susan Boyle is so much more than this.

I hope as she learns the ways of the music industry she finds her way back to who she is, to "The Dream". It is not, and was never, about making money or just singing; and certainly not about Christmas albums.

It is about courage. It is about giving heart to people.

On the evidence of that first, soaring, searing performance on Britain's Got Talent, I think she just might find her way back...

Don't Dream it's over

Not bad--just everything the same, without the dynamic or rhythmic variety that makes music interesting. If she can't shake it up on her next album I fear the dream will be over for this inspiring talent. Come on, Susan, I know you can sing something up tempo!

Biography

Born: 01 April 1961 in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Amateur vocalist Susan Boyle became an overnight sensation after appearing on the first round of 2009's popular U.K. reality show Britain's Got Talent. Boyle, who was born in Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland in 1961, caught the judges (and the world) off guard with her masterful rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" from the musical Les Misérables, due in part to the unemployed and undeniably plain church volunteer's "salt of the earth" demeanor and country spinster back-story. Boyle attempted a singing...
