| 1 | VideoWorking towards a socially relevant, responsive and engaged societal psychology | Social and health inequalities are ever-present today and are associated with growing urban poverty. Professor Darrin Hodgetts has researched the everyday lives of members of the underclass in New Zealand and England. He looks at the role of media and public perceptions in either addressing or perpetuating social disadvantages. | 18 4 12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 2 | VideoPhase Transitions, Waves and Chaos in the Brain | Physics tells us that most systems can exist in a variety of states or phases. For example, water can be a liquid, or a solid (ice) or a gas (steam). We have developed a model for the brain that describes major brain states in terms of distinct patterns of electrical activity. These states include conscious awareness, natural sleep, general anaesthetic coma and seizure. In this session Professor Moira Steyn-Ross discusses this model to better understand some of the transitions between states and to provide some clues about the fundamental purpose of sleep. Other potential applications include enhanced measurement of depth of anaesthesia, and, in the longer term, the possibility of both detecting and suppressing seizure events. | 12 12 11 | Free | View In iTunes |

In this inaugural address, Professor Brad Morse seeks to situate the legal, political and economic place of Māori in a broader global context that involves a comparison with the rights of Indigenous peoples in Canada, Australia and the USA as well as emerging international law standards. | 7 11 11 | Free | View In iTunes |
