CleanKPE Episode 202 | "Seadog" by Dorothy Butler Taiapa and Mokani have really enjoyed reading Seadog and recommend this tale of Old New Zealand to us. Dorothy Butler seems to like writing stories set in New Zealand over a 100 years ago and we learn lots about life for the early settlers from these books. Last year Kayla and Crystal entertained us with another one of her old tales, "By Jingo". "Seadog" is set in the wild west coast of Waitakere in 1890. It tells the story of a 10 year old boy called Joseph who is disabled and what happens when a dog comes from the sea and befriends him. Joseph's family has settled by the sea at Karekare during the 1890s. One day, unable to scamper about the rocky outcrops with his brothers due to his disability, Joseph discovers a dog washed up on the beach, injured and exhausted but still alive. Josephs father reluctantly agrees that they may keep the dog until its wounds are healed but no longer. Joseph and his brothers set out to convince their father otherwise. | 26 12 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 201 | "The Boy Who Bounced Around Aotearoa New Zealand" by Christine Hurst This is another special podcast made by two members of the same family. We love it when older family members help the younger ones with their reading and in this podcast you will hear Jordan, who is in Year 6, help his young brother Kingston produce his first podcast for KPE. Kingston has chosen a funny book to share with us (you probably guessed that already from the title) about a boy called Zac who does a lot of bouncing - including bouncing on the bed. And from what we hear in the podcast it is not only Zac who who does this! We wonder how many kids annoy their parents bouncing on the bed? In the book Zac bounces from one place to another in New Zealand, so if you want to learn more about New Zealand as well as enjoying a fun read you should read this book. | 26 12 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jaydn and Elijah are proud to be podcasting the 200th book for KPE. They have chosen a book that fits with the school-wide Inquiry for term 4 -"Go For Green" The book is called "Recycled" by Sandy MacKay and as you can guess by the title it is a story based around the theme that is very important at Pt England School at the moment; reduce, reuse and recycle. We enjoy reading books by Sandy Mackay as she is one of our favourite authors. She came to Pt England School a couple of years ago and published a podcast herself with Alosina, one of our past pupils. | 30 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 198 | "The Pipi Swing" by Sarona Aiono-Iosefa Malama and Kathleen tell us about this cool New Zealand book that talks about something most New Zealanders do every Summer. Even if you have never called it 'the pipi swing', when they start telling you about it you will know what they are talking about. You know when you go to collect pipis, and you dig your toes in the sand and start swivelling your feet so your toes go under the sand until they feel the pipis? And then you bend down and pick them up before a wave washes over you? Well, that's the pipi swing. | 30 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 197 | "The Cindy Limpics" by Michael Wilson Caleb and Ibyss review a story from the School Journals. This was a story inspired by the Sydney Olympics in September 2000 and their class had been reading lots of books and stories about the Olympics in Term 3 because of the Beijing Olympics. In this story Cindy Baxter is determined to do well at her class Olympic Games. But Cindy is accident-prone and her training sessions always seem to end in disaster. This funny story tells us about a series of incidents that eventually wind up with Cindy (who is injured) having an Olympic event made up especially for her. CleanKPE Episode 196 | "Brodie" by Joy Cowley Karen and Robin chose to podcast this book because they really liked it when their teacher read it to the class. In this book everyone in the class knew that Brodie was sick, but they thought he'd get better. Maybe it was because he talked a lot about being a chopper pilot. Brodie was a really talented artist as well and he shared a lot of his dreams with them through his artwork. This book is a happy, funny, sad book that talks about how the class support a very sick friend when he is in hospital and how they cope when he passes away. We are sure you will enjoy their podcast and their discussion about how Karen felt last year when she was sick in the Starship. | 30 11 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 195 | "A Booming in the Night" by Ben Brown On a still, quiet night, when the moon is full and the stars are winking in the sky, Pukeko is woken from her slumbering by a booming in the night. Kakapo is lonely, so Pukeko sets out to find him a friend. She meets many others but none of them want to come along to find some company for Kakapo, they’re all too busy. But who’s that peering out from behind the leaves of the forest? Perhaps Kakapo doesn’t need Pukeko’s help, for it seems – with a tumbling, blundering flap of feathers – that the booming in the night might have attracted just the right sort of company after all. This latest podcast is the work of the students from Room 8 and they show us that 6 year olds can podcast too! Jonita and TylerMarie are the podcasters and you will be amazed at how talented they are when you listen to this episode. CleanKPE Episode 194 | "The Supertastic Marvelistic Storiez and Poemz" 4 kidz by kidz! John, Tinei, Jaydn and Simone went to Auckland's North Shore to track down the authors of this book. This book is a collection of short stories and poems that have been written by students from Stanley Bay School. We had enjoyed hosting them at Pt England School last year when they came to learn about podcasting from our Year 6 students. Their goal is to raise money for a local cancer charity, Kenzie's Gift. We read this book and chose our favourite stories before we set out to interview the authors of the stories. It was a treat to meet the students from the 2 classes involved in this project, to hear all about how they set about writing and publishing a book, and to make a podcast for KPE with them. This podcast is different from our usual format because we are actually interviewing the authors and we have a number of people contributing to it. We have really enjoyed making the podcast and we recommend this book as an excellent read. You should go to their website and order copies of the book for yourself (- or for your school library if you are an adult). We live in a country with a lot of sheep - in fact we have about 10 sheep for every person in New Zealand. But that doesn't mean we all know a lot about sheep because we don't have any in Auckland city. So we hope that as you listen to this podcast you will find out a bit about New Zealand sheep farms as well as enjoying the story. This story is about Sebastian, the sheepdog with the bad attitude, who is about to meet his match! Of course mud is on everyones' minds after all the rain we have had this Winter. Everytime we go outside we are stepping though mud and lots of our Winter sport has been played in the mud. We hear from Colin about his experiences when he used to live in Samoa and got to ride a chopper motor bike and a scooter around his family's property. CleanKPE Episode 189 | "Not Nice Stories" by John Parker Xeneqe and Tanisha are both in Year 6 and they bring us a very entertaining podcast about a book with 4 short stories. By the sounds of it each of the stories is pretty wacky and very funny. They are the kinds of stories created around 'What if..?" situations. They tell us about one of the stories in great detail - "Superbrain". In this story, Barney Jordan, who is an impressive speller, decides that always eating sheep’s brains is the reason why he always achieves top marks in school tests. Things start to happen though, and his behaviour starts to demonstrate some very scarily sheep-like characteristics. As the girls point out, New Zealand is the land of sheep, but these sorts of things do not really happen down here! Give the podcast a listen and read the book. CleanKPE Episode 172 | "To the Harbour" by Stanley Palmer. This beautifully produced book is presented by Matthew and Wayjo from Room 18. The boys comment that the illustrations in the book make it particularly special. They are photos of paintings done by the author and bring to life what New Zealand must have been like in the time their grandparents were young. From "the New Zealand Listener" The idea for the book came about because some children Palmer knew enjoyed his travel stories (the artist often works for long periods in remote parts of the country, sketching directly from the surrounds) and he wanted to write “the sort of thing you might tell your grandchildren” – and indeed you might; or your grandparents for that matter. Intended for readers from eight to 80, Palmer’s is a classic boys’ adventure told in the steady, laconic tone befitting the era (post-WWII) in which it is set. Both the story and the images convey a vocabulary of a time and place gone by, and the artist has provided a glossary to explain words no longer in circulation, like “bob – shilling in old currency” and “bughouse – movie theatre (because of the fleas)”. On the whole, however, the book recalls a New Zealand we recognise and long for, regardless of whether or not we have direct experience of such a place. For To the Harbour is a memoir of sorts. And as is the nature of memories, things have been changed and mixed up a bit to make a compelling plot. Palmer created the text and prints around the same time, “sometimes [adjusting] the story to fit the pictures and sometimes the other way around”, he says. From the opening pages, adult and child readers alike will be drawn in by the fine age-old combination of word and picture, and in particular by the atmospheric description of the “now quiet city” and the steady flow of dialogue setting up an episodic kind of expectation: The New Year had arrived in the now quiet city. The war was over – only the sound of a far-off car and the pulse of cicadas. “Mum, how about a bob for the flicks this arvo?” said Danny. “But I hate the bughouse in summer,” I complained. “Let’s pitch the tent in the backyard,” David said. “We could go to Graham’s Beach,” I suggested. As a children’s story, To the Harbour has the necessary shape and satisfaction of that genre: the children set out unsupervised by adults to experience adventure, excitement and a taste of danger before returning safely home. As a story for a broader audience, To the Harbour is in the tradition of literature concerned with remembering places and ways that are lost, like Steinbeck’s Cannery Row and many of Tim Winton’s short stories. As such, it represents the author’s politics of conservation by testifying in vivid and sensual detail to how things were (and not that long ago). “The Manukau Harbour [of the book’s title] was one of the greatest fish-breeding harbours of the world, yet they polluted it,” Palmer says. He recalls the harbour teeming with life, and regrets that there were not enough people to object to the ruin of its water and upper mudflats by untreated sewage. “Insofar as the book is a political indictment,” he says, “it is saying, ‘This is the place it was and look what has been done to it. Here was a place worth preserving.’” Palmer remembers being shocked as a child by people taking sand off the beach and knows that children see and hear a great deal more of what is going on in the world than adults give them credit for. In this story told from his childhood, the children are deeply connected to their natural environment and the images further describe a particular historical moment and age of relative freedom and exploration. A barge at the Onehunga Wharf, a lighthouse no longer standing, the classic conglomerate of general store/post office and red telephone box, pup tents beneath macrocarpa trees, a sun-burnt farmhouse at dusk and bird-swept coastlines are eac | 20 5 08 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 159 | "The Short Division of the World Secret Service - Case One: Bobblings" by Robin Kerr. This is a podcast we have all been waiting for. Robin Kerr sent us her books just before the Xmas break and some of our students took them away for a read while on their long Summer holiday. Simone read this book and tells Ramona all about it. They also drew a few pictures in Photoshop to enhance this podcast. There are three books in this exciting series, and in Case One Lucie Lakewood and her best friend Rodney Keino start a new life as agents for the World Secret Service when a secret code arrives in the mail. They use cyber-tracking, wit, fast running and huge brains to discover the lure of the ugly Bobblings. Like all good secret agent stories they have to save the world from a mad villain. Simone says it is a really exciting story to read and also has a message for the readers; even if you're young, you can still do the right thing and make a difference. At Pt England School we talk a lot about 'doing the right thing', so it is pretty cool to think that Robin Kerr seems to think it is important too. CleanKPE Episode 152 | 'Pania of the Reef' by Peter Gossage. Rasil and Iese introduce this well known and loved New Zealand story. They are both Year 6 students from Room 18. In Māori mythology, Pania of the Reef was a beautiful maiden who lived in the sea on the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand. By daylight she swam about with creatures of her reef world but after sunset would go to a stream that ran into the bay where the city of Napier now exists. She would travel up the stream to an area where she could rest among the flax bushes. Karitoki, the very handsome son of a Māori chief, quenched his thirst every evening at the stream where Pania rested because it had the sweetest water. He was unaware she was observing him for many weeks until one night she whispered a faint spell. It carried on the wind to Karitoki who turned around to see Pania emerge from her hiding place. Karitoki had never seen someone so beautiful and instantly fell in love. Pania fell in love also, and they pledged their lives to each other and were secretly married. Pania and Karitoki went to his whare (house), but because it was dark no-one saw them enter. At sunrise, Pania prepared to leave but Karitoki tried to stop her. She explained that as a creature of the ocean, when the sirens of the sea called her each morning, she could not survive if she did not go to them. She promised to return every evening and their marriage continued on that basis. Karitoki boasted to his friends about his beautiful wife, but no one believed him because they had never seen her. Frustrated by this, Karitoki consulted a kaumatua (wise elder) in the village who believed Karitoki as he knew ocean maidens did exist. The kaumatua told Karitoki that being a sea creature, Pania would not be allowed to return to the sea if she swallowed cooked food. That night, as Pania slept, Karitoki took a morsel of cooked food and put it in Pania's mouth. As he did so, Ruru the morepork (owl) called a loud warning and Pania was startled from her sleep. Horrified that Karitoki had put her life in jeopardy, Pania fled from the whare and ran to the sea. Her people came to the surface and drew her down into the depths as Karitoki swam frantically about the ocean looking for her. He never saw her again. When people now look deep into the water over the reef, some say they can see Pania with arms outstretched, appealing to her former lover. It is unknown whether she is imploring him to explain his treachery, or expressing her continuing love. | 25 11 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 94 | "Kiwi Moon" by Gavin Bishop. Caleb and Mokani from Room 16 present this episode of KPE. We are great fans of Gavin Bishop at Pt England School and these Year 5 boys bring to life another one of his books for children. Kiwi Moon is the story of a little white kiwi. When he is born his mother doesn’t recognise him because he’s not brown. Little Kiwi looks to the moon as his mother instead because it is white and bright and round. In the background of this story we see the changing times of a nearby pa. Through illustrations only we, as the reader, see intertribal warfare, the death of the chief, English soldiers arriving and then the burning of the pa. This fire spreads and the two stories become one as the white kiwi’s habitat is razed to the ground. On the surface this is a very simple story but it also contains themes of intertribal warfare, European colonisation of New Zealand, Maori/ Pakeha relations, and conservation. There is much to savour on each page — with Gavin’s stunning illustrations of the main kiwi story, the parallel story of the pa, plus close-ups of insects and plants. | 5 7 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

This well known classic children's story is retold by Gavin and the boys enjoy the retelling and the art work on the book. Both boys are Year 6 students from Room 17. In keeping with the fact that in this version of the story it is an acorn that falls on Chicken Licken's head, Gavin Bishop has used an autumn setting for his story. Rich red, brown and gold oak leaves cover the front and back of the book. The animals are boldly portrayed with Henny Penny and Cocky Lockey being particularly resplendent in their plumage. | 4 7 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

The sea wants the strong young boy who is fishing in his boat for itself; unable to lure him the sea enlists the help of the wind to sink his canoe. His mother's love is strong enough to push back the sea, revealing terrible monsters, before finding her son crying in a coral forest. These Year 6 girls have worked on this podcast together in their reading group and share this interesting tale of early New Zealand with us. The story describes how Horeta and his friends view their first siting of a European ship and their fascination with the 'thunder-stick' that shoots birds. The first sighting of Captain James Cook and his crew is told through the eyes of a young Maori boy. These strange European people were seen as tupua (foreign demons) by the Maori because of their colouring. And this fear was reinforced by their strange behaviour — sitting backwards in a rowboat must surely mean they could see through the back of their heads! CleanKPE Episode 88 | "The Three-Legged Cat" by Margaret Mahy. Lanivia from Room 17 presents his first podcast in this episode with Sam acting as his DJ. The boys really enjoyed this quirky story and the tale of the adventure seeking cat. The widow Daisy Gimble is glad that she has a gimpy cat, as his three-leggedness prevents him from wandering, and she approves of staying put. Tom, however, wants nothing more than to see the wide world. Respectable Daisy can't help but dread the visits of her drifter brother, Danny, who always wears a "revolting, molting Russian hat" on top of his bald head. One day he comes for tea, and when he leaves, he mistakes her sleeping cat for his hat. Tom finally gets to see the world, Danny finds that a cat is warmer and better company than a hat, and Daisy is satisfied as can be with her inanimate pet. Readers will laugh at the woman's proper and peevish opinion of the way Tom comes "running, all hobbledy-bobbledy" every time she opens the fridge, and will relish the inevitable conclusion. Allen's large, humorous, full-color illustrations, with their clever compositions and expressive, crescent-mouthed faces, pick up the jokes in the story perfectly. Once again Mahy reveals her empathy for slightly loopy, fun-loving underdogs. | 1 7 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode 83 | "Portable Ghosts" by Margaret Mahy. KeeVin from Room 18 has read this book and he is interviewed by his classmate Lorenz. They are both in Year 6. Another delightfully original story from Margaret Mahy, one of the world’s best-loved authors. In Portable Ghosts, Margaret Mahy skilfully blends modern technology, humour, suspense human values, sibling relationships, boy-girl friendship, and mystery, into a fast-paced adventure story. The notion of ghosts existing has always been a staple part of children’s literature but in Portable Ghosts, this is given a novel twist. The idea that ghosts can be carried around and actually become portable is a novel, very clever, and slightly zany addition to the ghost story genre. Although not a story to give students nightmares, the use of modern computer technology as a major component of the plot will give it a high degree of believability amongst readers. Story synopsis Ditta is a twelve-year-old girl who likes to get things sorted out in her mind. She is curious, logical and believes that sitting down in front of a computer forces you to apply logic to a problem. She has, in fact, the best characteristics of a detective and just loves a good mystery. Ditta has a mystery on her hands. Recently, every time she visits the school library she sees a flickering image of a boy reading a book in the corner of the room but no one else can see him. She confronts the ghost and to her surprise it answers her question before disappearing. Ditta is determined to get to the bottom of this. Her research determines that the school library is a converted old house where many years ago, a young boy – Hilly Saffron – slipped and fell to his death while reading a book on the roof. Further conversations with the ghost reveal that he haunts the book he was reading at the time of his death. With the ghost’s help, Ditta locates the book in an old library cupboard and by slipping the book into her backpack, she is able to carry the ghost around with her – a portable ghost. Ditta is worried about the uncharacteristic brooding behaviour of her friend Max and discovers that he is absolutely terrified by twisting floorboards in his bedroom and an angry ghost who tries to escape from his computer screen whenever he turns it on. Ditta immediately sees that this is another ghost needing to come to terms with its past. She enlists the help of her portable ghost to help solve the mystery of this ghost’s violent behaviour. Her young computer geek sister, Mirabel, manages to capture the ghost on a floppy disk and with both Portable Ghosts in tow, they enlist the help of an eccentric local identity to research the history of the angry ghost. It transpires the ghost was a harsh and cruel ship’s officer called Blake who was killed by some of his shipmates and buried with a tree planted over him. Over the years he became part of the tree, which generations later was cut down and used for the floorboards in Max’s bedroom. Both ghosts exchange stories and realise they are part of history. Max and Ditta tell their stories as part of a homework project, which allows the ghosts to rest more easily. Hilly and Blake even agree to help Ditta, Max and Mirabel with a new detective agency venture to help people who are haunted by ghosts, and help ghosts come to terms with history. | 10 6 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

But in the light of his abysmal performance at school his father, King William, decides that Timothy is only fit to work in the royal library. He must use all of the other skills that he possesses to outwit the dragon. Will Timothy defeat dragon Fire-Snorter in single combat, or will he meet the same grisly fate of those who have come before him? The story deals light-heartedly with issues such as living up to expectations, taking risks, keeping promises and good triumphing over evil. CleanKPE Episode 57 | "Finding Pounamu" by Bronwyn Tainui. This episode of KPE was created by a group of Year 6 students after they read this story in a School Journal (Part 1 No4 2005) published by Learning Media. Tiana and Sean were chosen by the group to present Episode 57. This is their first podcast and we know you will enjoy what they have to share - including an excerpt from their Culture Group. As we experiment with different ways of producing podcasts at Pt England School, we are coming to the conclusion that for first-timers, creating a group script is a great way to get started. then we have all the members of the group record it and the group decides which version they want to have published. We are finding that this is a very supportive method for getting students confident to podcast, and after creating a group one they are happy to work in pairs. As you may have read we are using podcasting as a lure to engage our students in core literacies - and in the case of KPE this is reading- and we are finding it is highly motivating for previously reluctant readers. | 21 5 07 | Free | View In iTunes |

They can’t help so Angus consults rocket scientist Dr Von Brawn, who even rings up NASA to no avail. An Italian chef and a worm farmer are also visited. We wonder what those first readers would have thought of this podcast? KPE has a special focus on New Zealand fiction and our students convey some gems about life in New Zealand in each podcast. McMillan lives along the rocky shore of the Thames Coast and many of her books have a focus on animals and evoke New Zealand's natural environment. CleanKPE Episode 41 | Annie and Victor present KPE Episode 41. Annie has been reading 'Eating Plums in Bed' by Joy Cowley and Jenna Packer and Victor is DJ for this session. They are both Year 6 students in Room 17 at Pt England School. Your mother says, "Do not eat plums in bed or something will happen." But, of course, you ignore her. A wildly imaginative tale of "what if..." While a disobedient boy languishs in a plum tree of his own making, Mum and Dad dance the light fantastic until they decide to get him down and admonish him, again, not to eat plums in bed. Jenna Packer - Illustrator: What would you do if your parents left you stuck up a plum tree for months and months? This was an unusual book to illustrate as the main character spends most of his time alone and in one place; coping with living in a tree – he does not even get a change of pyjamas. The tree changes though, as do the child’s feelings about being there, and so that was the focus of Jenna’s pictures. Although she used drawings of real plum trees, she made the branches very thin, so you could see how far up and away the boy feels by winter-time. | 13 9 06 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanKPE Episode Thirty four | 'Caesar the ANZAC Dog' by Patricia Stroud is the poignant story of Caesar a Red Cross dog in active service in the First World War. Victor and Montell discuss this story in their first published podcast. Written by Patricia Stroud and illustrated by Bruce Potter, this new book tells the proud story of Caesar a redcross trained bulldog and his handler ‘Uncle Tom’. Caesar’s job was to rescue wounded soldiers from ‘No- Man’s- Land at the Battle of the Somme during the 1st World War. Patricia Stroud recalls this poignant and true story told to her by her Mother Ida who was present when the New Zealand Rifle Brigade boarded their troop ship to transport them to Egypt and the Western Front. The troops were led by their mascot, Caesar, who wore a blue ribbon on his collar given to him by Ida. Perfect for student Anzac Day awareness, general reading and social studies, this is a true story highlighting courage and loyalty of a dog and his handler in war time. CleanKPE Episode Thirtythree | This episode of KPE is a little different because we have the author of 'My Dad, the All Black' reviewing her own book under Alosina's expert guidance. This is Sandy McKay's first podcast ever and KPE is proud to be sponsoring her debut! Alosina greatly enjoyed reading this book and it was an added bonus to find that Sandy McKay was visiting Pt England School as part of the Storylines tour. The producers of KPE were quick to ask Sandy if she would participate in a podcast, and once she found out what a podcast is (!) she was great to work with. We think you will agree that Alosina shows her the ropes with a great deal of assurance. In 'My Dad, the All Black', Will McCann, 12 years old, is a top notch rugby player. Everybody says he gets his talent from his famous All Black father, but Will never knew his dad. After a game goes wrong, Will wonders if he plays rugby because he loves the game, or because everyone says he should. He eventually unlocks a secret that helps him to decide things for himself. Sandy McKAY(1959 - ) is a fiction writer for junior readers. McKay was born and raised in Dunedin. Although McKay knew she wanted to write, she chose instead to try her hand at fruit picking, waitressing, and various office jobs. After attending University of Otago McKay opened a fruit shop, which she ran until 1987 when she became a free-lance writer. As a free-lance writer McKay’s wrote features for Next, More and the NZ Women’s Weekly. She also writes a regular humorous column for Kiwi Parent Magazine. CleanKPE Episode TwentyEight | Annie and Moli discuss "Down in the Forest" by Yvonne Morrison & Jenny Cooper in KPE Episode 28. This book is a retelling of Olive Wadsworth‛s traditional counting rhyme ‘Over in the meadow‛. It has been a favourite with children since the late 19th century, and now New Zealand children can enjoy a uniquely Kiwi version. It features New Zealand birds and plants such as the tui living in an old kowhai tree, kauri snails, huhu grubs and a rimu tree. It has been brought to life by the beautiful, vivid illustrations of Jenny Cooper. Inspiration for Down in the Forest came from Yvonne’s love of animals and her fondness for native New Zealand birds, insects and reptiles. She thought she would enjoy writing about them. CleanKPE Episode TwentySeven | The picture book, The Bantam and the Soldier (1996), illustrated by Robyn Belton, and written by Jennifer Beck, won the Picture Book Category and the Book of the Year Award in the 1997 New Zealand Post Children's Book Awards. The Bantam and the Soldier is a great story with amazing illustrations. It takes place in the midst of the fighting in France during World War I. In the midst of the fighting and devastation a soldier named Arthur forms a special friendship with a bantam he calls Bertha. This is a wonderful story of friendship and survival. The Bantam and the Soldier is based on the author and the illustrator's memories and memorabilia collected by their families. As you read on the inside cover, the book is dedicated to their grandfathers and great uncles. Alosina and Wilmenna find this book especially interesting in the "Year of the Veteran'. They, along with other Year 5 and 6 students at Pt England School, are involved in a project investigating the YOTV and have had some interesting guest speakers to share their wartime memories with them. CleanKPE Episode Thirteen | Korero Pt England : Episode 13 features 'The Whale Rider' by Witi Ihimaera. This book is very well known as it has been made into a major motion picture. In this episode Miriam interviews Miss Erick, one of the Year 6 teachers. As the school year draws to a close in New Zealand our Year 6 students are preparing to leave Pt England and move on to an Intermediate school in 2006. The students decided it was time that the teachers experience what it is really like to sit in front of the microphone and present a podcast. Miss Erick chose to read ' Whale Rider', and Miriam, as the most experienced podcaster, guides her through. It seems like it is not as easy to record a podcast that makes sense as the teachers had thought! CleanKPE Episode Twelve | Korero Pt England: Episode 12 is presented by Latham and Alosina, Year 5 students at Pt England School. They have produced this episode as part of their reading programme. Latham has been reading 'Knitwits' by William Taylor. This weeks episode is presented by Year 5 students as the regular podcasters from Year 6 are all away at camp. They have gone to Kawau Island for a week in the Hauraki Gulf. There was no shortage of younger students eager to take their place, and Latham and Alosina have stepped up with a very polished podcast for first-timers! The students write their own scripts and record their podcast in the corridor outside the classroom. They record the podcast in Garage Band and from there export it to iTunes. This week we had some technical complications with a buzz in the microphone, so we switched to video recording. We recorded the podcast on the video camera, imported the footage into iMovie, exported it as an .aiff file and from there to Garage Band for editing. A bit of a convoluted process, but the children are all confident with using video and iMovie, so it was quicker doing this than waiting for technical help with the microphone buzz! Fantastic podcast kids
I am a grade 4 teacher in Singapore and I have just listened to the fantastic podcasts put together by these talented students from Pt England School. I was so impressed to hear how professional they are and it is brilliant to hear they are all performed and created by the students. I will definitely be showing these to my students and will also be trying this in my own classroom. Congratulations kids, keep it up!
Four years and still going strong!
We have just heard that KPE has reached its 4th birthday. Tino pai KPE. Who would have thought 4 years ago that a technology that seemed so 'geeky' would have become part of school life in such a short space of time AND helped so many kids become better at reading, writing, speaking and listening.
