Clean#12 Gangstagrass | Lightning on the strings, thunder on the mic It's called Gangstagrass (http://www.gangstagrass.com/). Bluegrass & Hip/Hop's answer to the Reese's peanut butter cup. A sweet mix that led to an Emmy nomination for best theme song, "Long Hard Times to Come" heard Wednesday nights on the FX hit TV series Justified (http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/justified/). The genius behind this hip/hop mashup is a Brooklyn-based producer, singer and songwriter- a man called Rench. Shake up this hybrid box of rap vocals (T.O.N.E-z, an NYC emcee is featured on some tracks), beats and bluegrass samples and what pours out is something indescribably delicious. Wait! Epilepsy (since age eight), brain surgery and a horrific run-in with a fork lift would stop most of us cold. All they do for Jim is spur his enormous talent and immense heart to churn out eerily touching tunes. CleanShow #10 Melina Gerges | If you love pop, but hate the indiscernible lyrics and three chord banality of today's pop, you will flat out adore Melina Gerges (http://melinagerges.com/). She's a rare combination of high musical intellect (as you'd expect of a classically trained Italian opera diva), great range and perfect pitch, with the ability to write modern songs that pour from her soul into yours. Born in the US of Egyptian parents, Melina and her husband live in Houston where she helps support the Texas Children's Hospital (http://melinagerges.texaschildrens.org/) and their Heal Sick Children campaign with benefit concerts. The couple are expecting their first child in February. Gary Saint Germain joined the crew this year, the high-energy Boston drummer instantly altering Ironwood Rain's course to a more dynamic, percussive sound. But that, Matto says, "would only be half right." Since 1989, Boston-based All Mod Cons (http://www.allmodcons.net) (named after The JAM's breakout album) has been paying tribute to and recreating the excitement, passion and raw energy of the British punk-pop legends. One of three original tribute groups to hit the shores of the UK nearly two decades ago, All Mod Cons scored big with young fans of The JAM. Several European tours later, the Americans are still at it. Lead-singer, guitarist and co-founder, Barry Pugatch, AMC's current drummer, A.J. Beaulieu, and Matto (Bruce Foxton on stage) continue to remind stateside audiences of just how bloody good The JAM were, along with their important place in music history. CleanShow #5 Crazy Mary | Commercialization be damned... Their art firmly rooted in the 60s, Crazy Mary (http://www.crazymary.com) has been around the NYC music scene for a dozen years. You will find their genre somewhere in the rock/ progressive rock/ Alternative/ Underground spectrum. What you won't find is a band that produces sounds to get "discovered" by a major label. They write, perform and record music they're passionate about. Formed by veteran Lower East Side guitarist and songwriter Charles Kibel and drummer Nick Raisz, Crazy Mary has been conjuring its refreshingly oddball avant-garage rock since 1998. A bubbling cauldron of chiming and scraping guitars, creepy organ, spacey, experimental sounds, Dada-ish pranksterism, and absurdly danceable rhythms, the band distills it all into a surreal cocktail of post-punk/psychedelic weirdness. And now, with the recent additions of legendary underground violinist Walter Steding and expatriate Australian vocalist Em Z, things have gotten even weirder. In a good way, of course. We sat down with Charles, Nick and Walter to talk tunes-- and came away with a finer understanding of the music theory, intellect and artistic juices that fuel this impossible-to-button hole band. CleanShow #4 Maree McRae | Urgency... It is the title of her new album and for Maree McRae (http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/mareemcrae/from/podprince) the music contained therein is deeply personal. Begun as an Americana / Country studio project, something delightfully odd happened on its way to radio stations across the land. One of the tracks, "Breeze" became the #1 most added single in the country making it’s mark nationally at #7, alongside TAYLOR SWIFT, on Adult Contemporary Radio. But, as you will hear, the real story is how "Urgency" came to be. Maree wrote the title track in her car after exiting a Denver hospital where her 18-year old son had just been diagnosed with a serious immune system disorder. Something he had suffered with since birth. Maree has been compared to Jewel, Mary Chapin Carpentar and Michelle Branch, a distinction she richly deserves. We think you will agree. He grew up in Maine and Vermont, taught high school English for years (yes, waited tables & tended bar) and wrote ad copy. Along the way he's played and sung his tunes from NYC to Atlanta to LA, and in countless other cities and towns in between. Oops, sorry Nick, nobody questions your masculinity (at least not while you're wielding those drum sticks)! They're taking NYC by storm, and taking no classic rock 'n roll prisoners. Spend some time this St. Paddy's day getting to know Niamh (pronounced: Neev in her native Ireland), KG (owns more guitars than most anyone you know) and Nikki (don't let all those tats fool you, she studied music and recording engineering at Berkley). But especially so if you're a child. Which is what Heather and Norman Jones set out to do in 2003 when they conceived of the Rhythm Child Network (http://rhythmchild.net). Big people vibes, soul, R & B, reggae... for children. As you will hear, the couple's two boys, Bailey (9) and Andre (4) contribute mightily to the cause, on stage and off. Rhythm Child’s mission is to encourage children to create soulful music and percussion, while also building their self confidence. “Eat a Bowl of Cherries” the group’s latest release, proves that not all children’s music needs to be hyperactive and saccharin sweet. Style-wise, Rhythm Child sounds more like Otis Redding than Alvin and the Chipmunks, an innovation that will delight children and parents alike. Enjoy the show, folks!
