Mat Latos Padres/Reds Trade Reaction with Jeff Erickson | Say this for Josh Byrnes: the man is not afraid to make a big move. There's a new sheriff in town, folks. Byrnes just flipped Mat Latos, the young, four-year controllable ace of the San Diego Padres' starting rotation, to the Cincinnati Reds. Latos has an All-Star build, million dollar arm, and a varied but overall solid two-year track record in the big leagues. But was he worth a big bet as the current and future ace of the Padres' staff? Byrnes said no and decided to cash in right now, while the market was vulnerable. Enter Cincinnati, a team frustrated by repeated failed attempts to acquire James Shields from Tampa Bay. The stars aligned, as the Reds are a team that knows it can't lure top-flight free agent pitching to their ballpark, much like the Padres can't expect hitters to come play at Petco. The trade marriage was perfect and now Latos is the man upon whom the Reds will pin their hopes, while Byrnes quietly racks up a huge haul and takes it to the cashier's window. [caption id="attachment_11952" align="alignleft" width="229" caption="Yonder Alonso could be the Padres\' Opening Day first baseman"][/caption]Joining me to discuss this blockbuster winter deal is Jeff Erickson, the senior editor at RotoWire and host of RotoWire Fantasy Sports Today on Sirius/XM Satellite radio (Sirius 211/XM 147). Jeff is also a long-time and passionate Reds fan who knows his team's system inside and out, and was the first man I thought of to turn to for insight on the package of Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, Edinson Volquez and Brad Boxberger. As expected, Jeff was surprised to see Reds GM Walt Jocketty empty the storefront with top (albeit blocked) prospects at first base and catcher, as well as an up-and-coming young reliever and a MLB-ready starting pitcher, all for the next four years of Mat Latos' career. Padres fans, get the low-down on the new additions to what is suddenly a very deep and balanced Padres system in this brand new Mat Latos Trade Reaction podcast from 619Sports.Net: [audio:http://www.619sports.net/audio/121711-padres-podcast.mp3] [caption id="attachment_11953" align="aligncenter" width="298" caption="Edinson Volquez will become the latest pitcher to hope for a career renaissance under Darren Balsley and inside Petco Park"][/caption] | 12/17/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Kicking It With The Sockers, Episode Five: Eduardo Velez | A trip to Tijuana on Friday night left the Sockers battered and weary yet victorious. A 6-5 overtime win elevated the Sockers to a 4-0 record and the top of the PASL Western Division table. Wild penalties, vicious hits, a tense finish and a comeback win led to one of the most exciting games in two-plus years. On this special post-Tijuana edition of Kicking It With The Sockers we bring you exclusive interviews with Sockers stars Brian Farber, Dan Antoniuk and Eric Wunderle, recorded as the boys crossed the border after the game. Kicking It With The Sockers, Episode Four: Brian Farber at Belly Up Tavern | It's time to get in depth and personal with your San Diego Sockers once again on the weekly Sockers podcast, Kicking It With The Sockers. This week's episode took us to Solana Beach and the Belly Up Tavern, where 2008-2009 PASL MVP Brian Farber and team captain Aaron Susi came out to enjoy lunch and a fun conversation. From the northern tip of Idaho, Brian Farber has come as far south as you can go in California to make his winter home and continue his domination of the indoor soccer pitch. We find out about Farber's life growing up in the tourist town of Sandpoint, how Brian makes the transition from excelling in the outdoor game to the frenetic pace of indoor, and how he almost became a Socker two years before making his move to San Diego. Plus, we're joined by Meryl from the Belly Up to take a look at the historic and still incredibly relevant concert locale in Solana Beach. What's the secret behind the poster art the Belly Up has made famous? Plus, Meryl announces a new Sockers ticket giveaway through Belly Up's Facebook page on the podcast. It's the only place for indoor soccer fans to get the inside scoop on their twelve-time champion San Diego Sockers. Chargers Recap Podcast: Over To The Dark Side | All season long, there has been a dark cloud lurking over Chargers Nation. Even on the opening kickoff of the season, fans were ready to boo, hiss, and tweet #fireNorv to anyone who would listen or follow. As the Bolts lurched their way to a 4-1 record, the split in this town and this team's fan base became more pronounced. For every fan who was excited about a possible playoff run there was another who was sure that under Norv Turner, success could only be a mirage. Six weeks and five losses later, the Chargers are tied for last in the AFC West with a 4-6 record, and even Turner's most ardent supporters have to say the writing is on the wall. This includes your 619 Sports reporters. Last week after the Raiders game, Dan McLellan reached his breaking point and said "it's time for a change". This week, a fourth quarter timeout snafu provided the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back for Craig Elsten as well. With six games remaining, would it really be better in the long run for the Chargers to muddle their way into a playoff appearance, or to save this village must the Bolts burn down their front office and coaching staff? Craig and Dan discuss (along with a dissection of what went wrong in the Windy City) in their latest Chargers podcast on 619Sports.Net: [audio:http://www.619sports.net/audio/112111-chargers-podcast.mp3] | 11/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Jay Cutler and the Chicago Bears are looking to dish out some pain to Philip Rivers and the Bolts, but could San Diego turn to their running game to pull off an upset? Craig and Dan are here for their weekly Chargers preview podcast on 619Sports.Net. The boys have been on the money all year in breaking down San Diego's chances, but they split this week, with one of our podcasters actually going nuts and predicting a Chargers upset win. Kicking It With The Sockers, Episode Two: Aaron Susi | The San Diego Sockers are getting ready for their home opener and the ring ceremony celebrating their twelfth indoor championship. On the eve of a great night in franchise history, who better to talk to than the captain of the team, and what better place to do it than the Sockers' postgame party destination? We're at the Paradise Grille and Bar this week, right off the I-5 at Via de La Valle and just down the street from the Del Mar Arena, for our second weekly edition of the San Diego Sockers podcast, Kicking It With The Sockers. Paradise Grille is the official postgame party spot of the Sockers, and the only place you'll find your favorite Sockers players kicking it after another win at home. Joining me for lunch and a tour of the Grille is Sockers captain Aaron Susi. On the mend from an ankle sprain in the opening game, Susi sits down to reflect on the Sockers' offseason, his work in the team's front office, and what the franchise and the league needs to do in the future. Then, we look back at some of the highlights of fifteen years on the professional indoor pitch. Later in the show, I'm joined by Shayna, the owner of the Paradise Grille, to give Sockers fans a preview of the postgame parties which are sure to be the envy of the PASL. With terrific Happy Hour specials, you could even double dip with a pregame nosh and postgame celebration! Last but not least, Dan McLellan joins me for our weekly news and notes segment. Raiders-Chargers Preview Podcast: Chargers’ Last Stand? | The San Diego Chargers take the field tonight for their third game in eleven days, in danger of dropping all three and in doing so, dropping out of the AFC West lead. For the turnover-prone and embattled Bolts, is this a circle-the-wagons game, or does it become Custer's Last Stand? Craig and Dan will both be at the Q tonight for complete coverage of the Raiders and Chargers. Before the game, the 619 Sports guys laid down their pregame podcast, in which Craig has accurately picked the winner of each San Diego game so far this year. Will he go 9-for-9? (Hint: Chargers fans would be happy if he did). Get the breakdown on what the Chargers need to do to take care of business on a short week and restore order in the AFC West: [audio:http://www.619sports.net/audio/111011-chargers-preview.mp3] | 11/10/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Packers-Chargers Preview Podcast: Can Bolts Bounce Perfect Pack? | The San Diego Chargers are injury ravaged, reeling from back-to-back road giveaways, and returning home with a crucial AFC West showdown looming just four days away. Standing in front of them this afternoon, however, is a more pressing issue: the best team in the NFL, the undefeated (7-0) Green Bay Packers. On paper this game is a mismatch. How can the Chargers possibly derail the Perfect Pack? Craig and Dan are back for another Chargers preview podcast. The 619 Sports boys look at both sides of the football and put their heads together to try and come up with a possible path to a San Diego victory. Sadly, they find most of the roads blocked either by key injuries to offensive personnel, or a Packers team which presents untenable matchup problems. The best hope for the Bolts might just be the SI cover jinx. Like it!
Very good analysis of the Chargers. On point with both positive and negative observations of the team.
Insight
Love the insight, analysis, and the lack of annoying, gimmicky sports radio nonsense.
Only four stars because sometimes the podcast recording quality is low
