We the People: The 2008 AIA National Convention | "We the People," the 2008 AIA National Convention theme, calls architects to realize, and demonstrate, their essential role in solving the most pressing issues of our time?where we live, where we work, how we come together, our place on the land, our place in the world, and how we leave it for the generations to come. The convention program was designed to inspire the profession to address the needs of all people for good design, livable communities, and public policies that support those aims. It also sought to address how the average citizen perceives the architecture profession - as outside the resolution of critical issues rather than as essential to their solution. Finally, the exploration of all these issues and challenges in the context of case studies, technologies, integrated practice, and professional development has, we hope, moved the profession forward in important ways. 3% Withholding on Government Contracts: What does it mean and what is AIA doing. | Last year, Congress passed a measure - tucked into a larger bill in the middle of the night - that would require federal, state and many local governments to withhold three percent of payments from all government contractors. This means that architects who design public buildings, from courthouses to schools, would have their payments reduced by three percent - regardless of the size of your firm or the size of the project. | 8/15/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

A Global History of Architecture | Francis D.K. Ching talks about his new book, A Global History of Architecture, a work unabashedly huge in its proportions and refreshingly unique in its perspective. In an attempt to minimize Eurocentric biases, he and his co-authors organized the work chronologically rather than geographically. Beginning in 3500 BCE, they span the globe within each time period, occasionally taking time to discuss certain styles and major historical periods, but devoting most of its space to specific architectural works. He discusses architecture in timecuts, time spans growing shorter and denser as we reach the present, and the richness and diversity of human history through every "modern" period of architecture. | 7/20/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

Antoine Predock, FAIA on Choreography of Architecture | The 62nd AIA Gold Medalist, Predock has been described as designing buildings that grow out of their unique landscapes, creating symbols that are fearlessly expressive and sincere, simultaneously complex and guileless. It has been said by many that Predock's work joins the "mind" of architecture with the "body," and embeds both with a sense of spirituality that connects the land, the space, the client, and society together seamlessly. The scale of Predock's work ranges from the famed Turtle Creek house, built in 1993 for bird enthusiasts along a prehistoric trail in Texas, to a $285 million ballpark for the San Diego Padres that reinvents the concept of a stadium as a "garden" rather than a sports complex. His masterful integration of contemporary work in historical context, a skill for which he is well-known, is apparent in his buildings at Stanford and Rice Universities. Predock's influence also reaches international sites, namely the new National Palace Museum in Taiwan.
