| 1 | VideoMatt Chat 150: Piracy, DRM, and Digital Media with Shane R. Monroe | Episode 150! Even I'm amazed that I've produced so many episodes. So many reviews! So many interviews! So many bad jokes! Yes, it's time to celebrate. Besides a great interview with Shane R. Monroe--who I assume most of you are familiar with here, I offer up a special "thank you" in the form of an old school demo! You can download the video here. Below are some thoughts on the show and reflections on 150. read more | 5/27/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 2 | VideoMatt Chat 149: Diablo | With all the attention of the CRPG community focused on Diablo III, I thought it only fitting to give a retrospective on the 1996 game that launched the franchise--the original Diablo! Reducing the complex CRPG gameplay mechanics to utter simplicity, Blizzard offered up a mesmerizing clickfest that's enjoyed by thousands today. It also introduced "Battle.net," a value-add that allowed groups of players to co-op or compete online--for free! Download the mp4 here. read more | 5/21/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 3 | VideoMatt Chat 148: The Fat Man Answers Your Questions | Here's the last installment of my interview with The Fat Man, aka George Sanger. In this section, Fat Man answers your questions concerning game audio, careers in the industry, and even a bit of philosophy. If you think I did a good job on this interview series, please send a few dollars my way! Download the mp4 here. read more | 5/14/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 4 | VideoMatt Chat 147: The Fat Man Returns | This week, I'm back with The Fat Man (George Sanger) to talk about some of his most famous game scores. Yes, that means Wing Commander, Ultima Underworld, and The 7th Guest. As always, Fat Man has great behind-the-scenes stories about all this stuff, so you go ahead and kickback with a fine cigar and a horn of Dragon's Milk. I also do a bit of clowning around at the end, giving you a glimpse of what it's really like making these Matt Chat episodes (hint: take after take after take...) I'm back with a little podcast here addressing some of the popular threads raised right here at Armchair Arcade. After a special announcement and some talk about my Unity game project, I talk about smelly game environments, three games that made me want to own a system, and backward compatibility. I even briefly kvetch about Tera! Thanks to Mark, Rob D., and Clok for those fun topics! Download the podcast here. read more | 5/4/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 6 | VideoMatt Chat 146: Matt Reviews Legend of Grimrock | I'm back this week with a review of my pick for "Game of the Year," Legend of Grimrock! An awesome game for so many reasons, Grimrock has the added advantage of being independently produced and available for only $15! Get it direct from the developer and you'll still get a Steam key for sharing achievements. *Warning.* My video contains a few minor spoilers. Nothing that should ruin your fun, but if you're worried about it, just listen to the audio or watch it after you've completed the game. | 7 | VideoMatt Chat 145: The Skinny on The Fat Man | In the third installment of what's being called "my best interview ever," Mr. George "The Fat Man" Sanger continues his discussion of the industry, covering such topics as the dangers of establishing a nickname and why gaming has never had its Woodstock (we can still hope.) He also shows off his exotic instrument collection and explains why a proper musician never blames his tools. Download the mp4 here. As you know, Matt Chat is 100% funded by people like you. Matt's Podcast 12: Kickstart me Up! | Legend of Grimrock: Oh, hellz yeah!Hi, guys, it's been awhile since we had a new podcast up, so here's one I recorded today about the epic Legend of Grimrock and some of the latest Kickstarter news. Are we experiencing a fad--a brief phase--or on the cusp of a gaming revolution? I also chat a bit about Grimrock, though I stick to basic points since I plan to do a Matt Chat on it soon. As always, feel free to comment, ask questions, or do whatever it is you do below. Download the podcast here. read more | 4/18/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 9 | VideoMatt Chat 144: The Fat Man Talks Business | Here's part 2, and this is one video you do not want to miss if you want to know what's wrong with the industry today. The Fat Man lays it all out with his trademark wit and elegance. BTW, YouTube misidentified another video as "Matching 3rd Party Content." The Wu-Tang Clan??? Uh, whatever. Thankfully, you can download the video here. read more | 4/16/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 10 | VideoMatt Chat 143: The Fat Man Part I | Here's the interview with The Fat Man himself, George Sanger. George is indeed "The Man" when it comes to PC game audio, particularly back in the pivotal early 90s when we moved from the PC buzzer/speakers to Soundblasters. George helped standardize the industry and did all kinds of fantastic productions, including The 7th Guest and Wing Commander soundtracks. Lots of great stuff in this interview about how he got his start and much more. Download the viddy here. read more | 4/10/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 11 | VideoMatt Chat 142: Wasteland | Wasteland! By now, everybody who has ever been a fan of this game knows about Brian Fargo's Kickstarter project to make the sequel. So, naturally, I decided this week to take a look at the hallowed original. While not everything has aged gracefully, I must say it still holds up rather well today, with a particularly gritty storyline and great writing (printed in the manual, of course). It's also a remarkably violent game, going so far as to have the player slaughtering "cute little animals" and even babies! This game would definitely get an M rating today and probably arouse the ire of our good friend Hillary Clinton. At any rate here's the video! Enjoy, and please, lemme know what you think of the game and book ideas. Download the MP3. read more | 3/28/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 13 | VideoMatt Chat 141: David Fox on Cadillacs and Dinosaurs | This week's episode is focused mostly on David's later career, which includes the FMV game Cadillacs and Dinosaurs: The Second Cataclysm, which he'd probably rather people forgot about. ;) Still, the story of its creation is definitely worth listening to. David also talks about his news and iOS projects with Electric Eggplant. Finally, the ale of the week is perhaps the ultimate vintage gamer's ale: 8-Bit Pale Ale! Matt's Podcast 9: Massive Effect or Affect? | Mass Effect 3I was having such a good time this morning WRITING about Mass Effect 3 that I decided to do a 40 minute podcast about it, too. In addition to elucidating why I like the ending, I also jabber on about why gaming NEEDS this sort of thing--indeed, why sheltering kids from unpleasant realities may do them more harm than good in the long run. I also nitpick about the game and why it needs a lot more variety in its gameplay. (Note: I don't address the internal logical inconsistencies of the story here; I admittedly don't pay enough attention to this kind of thing to care if plot point A in the first game doesn't jive with plot point B in the second and makes utter nonsense of plot point C in the third. I'll leave that kind of thing for the alpha nerds.) Download the mp3 here. read more | 3/14/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 16 | VideoMatt Chat 140: David Fox on Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders | I'm back this week with David Fox round III, this time focusing on his epic adventure game, Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders. David has plenty of great stories about the game's development, as well as Lucasfilm Games development strategies in general. It's really fun hearing him talk about the competition between his company and Sierra On-Line--and speculate why Zak was so much more popular in Germany than elsewhere. The ale this week hales from the Netherlands, so naturally I had to offer a toast to our very own Mark Vergeer. ;) Download the mp4 here. read more | 3/11/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 17 | VideoMatt Chat 139: Labyrinth, Koronis Rift & More with David Fox | I'm back this week with part 2 of my interview with Lucasfilm designer David Fox. In this part, we talk about a lot of issues David faced in the 80s, such as why he disliked working on conversions (ports) and the steps they took to combat piracy. We also talk about Koronis Rift and Eidolon, as well as Maniac Mansion. We start talking about Zak here as well. Lots of good stuff for fans of Lucasfilm games. | 18 | VideoMatt Chat 138: Matt Interviews David Fox of LucasFilm Games | Here's a Matt Chat for all fans of Zak McKracken, Rescue on Fractalus!, and all the other great Lucasfilm Games classics. In this first bit, David and I chat about his early days and what was going on behind the scenes during the development of Fractalus. Did you know that it was George Lucas who proposed the alien imposters and that any mention of them be kept out of the manual? Classic stuff. | 19 | VideoMatt Chat 137: Kingdoms of Amalur, Reckoning | Hi, folks! I'm back this week with another retrospective--or rather, a review of a new action-RPG called Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning. I usually don't like this genre, but this time the developers have done a good job uniting action with strategy. Above all, else, I like the speed of this game and the excellent control you have over the character. R.A. Salvatore, Todd McFarlane, and Ken Rolston have done some good work here. Download the mp4. read more | 2/19/12 | Free | View In iTunes |
| 20 | VideoMatt Chat 136: Peter Oliphant on Stonekeep, Interplay, and Brian Fargo | In this part of my interview with Peter Oliphant, we finally get the dirt on Stonekeep's storied development cycle. What was going on behind the scenes of this monumental game? Peter gives us the lowdown in an emotional rant about the frustrations he suffered as control was wrested for him in a series of executive decisions by Interplay's Brian Fargo. Even with all of his experience working in Hollywood, his feedback was not even considered during the making of the FMV sequences--to disastrous effect. Great Show
If you are tired of "me too" podcasts that follow the leader with each other and only cover things that are the flavor of the week then you will definitely enjoy Armchair Arcade Radio. AAR is not your typical podcast, each member of Armchair Arcade has their own segment (with very little overlap) and they discuss what they want to discuss, this is a great format that serves the show really well. If you want to hear about gaming from the point of view of people that were there when it happened, and survived, listen to Armchair Arcade Radio.
Worth the Wait
Easily one of my favorite podcasts, gaming related or otherwise. Other podcasts claim to be 'geeky' or 'nerdy' but none compair to the hosts of Armchair (In a good way). Interesting topics, fun and lighthearted the hosts never take themselves too serious. It is so worth the month wait between episodes. Love the show and I think I have crush on Chris Kennedy's voice!
