Podcast Description
We like to think of "Crossing the 180" as the "Fresh Air" of filmmaking (referring to the popular NPR show starring Terry Gross). Unlike other podcasts about filmmaking, we don't get too caught up on all the gear and tech talk (although we DO cover that too). But most importantly, we get into long and deep conversations about WHO the filmmakers are. We interview filmakers who run the whole gamut. From big names in Hollywood, to YouTuber and Vimeo superstars blowing up social media, to DSLR and wedding filmmaking trailblazers. As long as they do great work, have an interesting story, and can actually carry on a great conversation, they're fair game.

#70 - Shawn Reeder | Three years ago I mentored a photographer friend of mine in the art of filmmaking. He has "purchased" my time as part of an auction to raise money for Thirst Relief. Little did I know that three years later my filmmaking mentee would be a guest on my show sharing his filmmaking experience with my audience. That photographer was Shawn Reeder. Shawn is somewhat of a Renaissance man. Photographer. Filmmaker. Musician. Poet. Mountain climber. I knew he "made it" as a filmmaker when his beautiful timelapse film "Yosemite: Range of Light" was blogged by Philip Bloom as "one of the most beautiful timelapses he's ever seen." Now, in just over three weeks, this personal project of Shawn's has garnered over 680,000 views on Vimeo. Let's find out how Shawn's journey in filmmaking began, and where it's going to take him. As we continue our series on the power of personal work. Tips, Tricks and Education for Filmmakers This week Mike Duval is back from LensProToGo talking about Lensbaby lenses? Don't forget to check out Letus, makers of DP Shane Hurlbut's Master Cinema Series. Triple Scoop Music CEO Roy Ashen talking about using music in short films. #68 - Brett Culp and His Batman Documentary | Be sure to visit this week's episode blog post at daredreamermag.com We continue our series on personal work with an interview of a man who's been a role model of mine for ten years: Brett Culp of Brett Culp Films. When I first hit the event video scene ten years ago, Brett and his company were the cat's meow of the wedding and event video world. They won multiple WEVA Creative Excellence Awards each year, had standing room only audiences for their presentations, and Brett always had a crowd 3-5 people deep surrounding him whenever he gave a talk. He still does a few event films each year for a very elite clientele, but much of his work nowadays is commercial work for corporations and non-profits. Oh, and he's making a documentary about Batman! Yeah, Batman. The documentary is called "Legends of the Knight" and it will look at the stories of people whose lives have been touched by the story of Batman. This is what my co-producer Dan Rollins, had to tell me about this episode as he was editing it: Holy crap. 3/4 of the way thru now and I think every filmmaker MUST listen to this one! His talk about finding what you love and letting that drive you, then doing the personal work to keep the passion alive... this will hit the noob like me as a warning to avoid burnout and to the vets who may have dug a rut and just collect paychecks. Man is this good! So there you have it! Bio While his portfolio of work is diverse, his mission is consistent: helping people create connections through the power of storytelling. He works from concept-to-completion on each film, developing the ideas, assembling the creative team, & delivering a finished production to the client. In every project, he is part filmmaker/part consultant/part therapist. His distinctive approach to filmmaking has attracted a client list that includes Fortune 500 companies, celebrities, royalty, professional athletes, best-selling authors, and rock stars. Brett’s work has been featured in national programs on NBC, CBS, Lifetime, Food Network, and WEtv. He has been a celebrity expert on Entertainment Tonight and US Weekly. He has been included in EventDV magazine’s “Top 25″ two years in a row. The newest edition of the college textbook “Documentary Storytelling” devotes an entire chapter to Brett’s unique production style. #66 - Eliot Rausch, Dir. of "Last Minutes with Oden" | I'm jazzed to start a new series on the podcast this week: "The Power of Personal Work." We have at least three guests over the next few weeks whose personal projects will inspire you. In many cases, their personal work has led to world-wide fame. First up is Eliot Rausch. Eliot is the director of "Last Minutes with Oden," a powerful documentary short that took the "best in show" award at the inaugural Vimeo Film Festival two years ago (Eliot returns this year as a judge). This is one of the most powerful interviews I've ever had. His passion and commentary about his craft and what drives him as an artist nearly moved me to tears. It's interviews like this that make this show special to me. I hope you find it as encouraging as I did. Bio Director Eliot Rausch is leading the charge in a new generation of young filmmakers with his compelling documentary style that pries at the heartstrings and reveals the humanity in each of his subjects. With his work being shown in a variety of platforms, Rausch is also completely hands-on, both directing and editing his work. As a filmmaker, he has a rapidly growing fan base, with critical recognition coming from both the advertising industry and the online film community. Tips, Tricks and Education for Filmmakers This week Mike Duval is back from LensProToGo talking about renting equipment vs. buying. I think you will find his answer refreshingly UN-biased considering he works for an equipment rental company. :) I'm thrilled to welcome new sponsors to the show, Letus, makers of DP Shane Hurlbut's Master Cinema Series. This we finally get Triple Scoop Music CEO Roy Ashen to come on the show and give us the "scoop" (pun intended) on how to legally license music for your films and videos. #63 - Khen Shalem, Director of "On the Road to Tel Aviv" | I had the pleasure to meet this week's guest last year around this time when I was filming the promo video for the Windrider Forum. His award-winning film "On the Road to Tel Aviv" was playing there and he was one of the filmmakers we interviewed for that video. I knew at that point I'd want to have him on the show. Khen talks about the making of his film which explores what happens on a bus ride to Tel Aviv when a Muslim woman, suspected of being a suicide bomber, gets on the bus. A very powerful film and an intriguing look at prejudice and grace. Bio Khen Shalem grew up in Kibbutz Nir-David in the Beit-Shean Valley. Like all young Israelis he joined the Israeli Defense Forces and served as a lieutenant in a bomb squad patrol unit. His army career was ended when he was badly wounded in a battle in Southern Lebanon. He then turned to science and completed a Bachelor of Science in Physics at Bar-Ilan University and a Master of Physics at the Weizmann Institute of Science. During his scientific research he gradually became aware of his wish to further develop his interest in human feelings and artistic creation. He completed a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production at Florida State University and completed “Road to Tel-Aviv” film just before graduating. Many thanks to my podcast co-producer, Dan Rollins. Dan is a terrific filmmaker in his own right, an audio guru, and even a voiceover talent. Check him out at LiveWireFilms.com. #62 - Nooma Writer/Director Santino Stoner | A few times a year I have themed series on the podcast. Past series have included The Business of Hollywood, Foreign Filmmakers and YouTubers. The latest series I've recored, but I've been sitting on for months now, is Faith in Filmmaking. I wanted to explore how a person's personal convictions affect their creativity. Although most of the filmmakers in the series would classify themselves as Christian, I think regardless of your personal convictions, you will find these interviews compelling and informative. We don't "talk religion". We talk about their experiences as filmmakers and how and why they do what they do. And given the level of talent these guys have, trust me, you'll want to tune in. Over the next four weeks we'll have: Santino Stoner, writer/director of the world-famous Nooma films series starring controversial pastor, speaker and best-selling author Rob Bell. Khen Shalem, a Jewish filmmaker who made a powerful, award-winning short film that looks at prejudice towards Muslims. Bjorn Ahmudson, the first motion graphics filmmaker I've had on the show. He works for Willow Creek, one of the largest churches in the country. Nathan Corrona, the Atlanta-based filmmaker behind music videos for some of the biggest names in Christian rock and R&B, including Chris Tomlin, Sanctus Real, Jeremy Camp, Kutless and TobyMac. Today we have Santino Stoner talking about among many other things, how Nooma got started and eventually reached over 50 million people worldwide in the past ten years. I particularly like his take on how stories and films break down when the format is used as a soap box. Bio Santino Stoner brings over a decade of experience in media development to Dot&Cross, a company that creates and produces creative story experiences that impact audiences across film, broadcast, print and interactive platforms. As Principal and Co-Founder, Santino oversees the creative vision and strategy for the company, as well as all project development. Previously, Santino Stoner was the head of production and development at Flannel, a content development and distribution firm. At Flannel, Santino co-created and developed Nooma, a short-film series that has sold several million copies worldwide. Santino is also credited as the writer/director for the 24 films of the series. Many thanks to my podcast co-producer, Dan Rollins. Dan is a terrific filmmaker in his own right, an audio guru, and even a voiceover talent. Check him out at LiveWireFilms.com. #56 - Jonathan Yi and Making His Canon C300 Review | A couple of months ago commercial director Jonathan Yi posted his review of the Canon C300. It was the most entertaining and informative review I've ever seen. Apparently others felt that same because it racked up 250,000 views in just a week. But despite how terrific the video was, and considering that many people in the industry believe that this video single-handedly turned around the growing negative word of mouth regarding the camera (specifically related to it being 8bit yet will probably cost $15-$20,000), Canon USA was not too crazy about the video and disavowed it. In today's episode you'll find out how that all went down, why Jonathan was still able to post it online even though Canon USA didn't like it, and why the sales division of Canon LOVES him. You'll also learn... How he got into commercial directing What it's like having an agent Tips on how to make a demo reel that will get noticed by agencies What kind of videos you should post online The benefit of selling yourself as a director vs. DP Whether it's worth going to film school Insight into his half Japanese and half Korean background and its impact on his life and work And much, much more. I don't care how many other interviews of Jonathan you might have seen, read or heard, this one will take you to places you've never been before. This is one of the longest single episodes ever. I considered splitting it in two, but I think you'll find everything he's saying so fascinating, the time will fly by. Post Credits Fun As usual, you want to stay past the end credits. Today we have a treat as I call a local camera store to find out the difference between 8bit and 10bit. The ensuing conversation is high-larious. Enter Drawing for Free Music Each week we will also give away a free song from Triple Scoop Music (a $60 value). #55 - Jesse Rosten and Fotoshop by Adobé | YouTube superstars aside, very few filmmakers get the opportunity to create a video that goes viral once, let alone twice. Today's guest has done just that. His first viral claim to fame was creating the iPad + Velcro video that Apple loved so much they actually added it to their site (that's huge. Having done work for Apple and having a wife who used to be employed by them, I know first hand how amazing that is. To have them include User Generated Content on their site is unheard of. Truly a remarkable feat). Now he's done it again. The "he" I'm talking about Jesse Rosten, a commercial film director living in Redlands, CA who last week uploaded "Fotoshop by Adobé," a hilarious and satirical look at the fashion and beauty industry and the role that computer technology plays in perpetuating false images of beauty. In one week it has gotten over 2.7 million views on Vimeo and over 1.5 million on YouTube. Jesse was on Crossing the 180 last March to talk about that iPad video and his career. Definitely make sure you check that out if you get a chance. Today he tells us how he came up with the idea, the behind the scenes making of it, how (and if) these videos have helped his career, and what he's up to next. As usual, you want to stay past the end credits. Today we have a treat that had me in stitches! :) Featured Artist, More Lens Tips and Zacuto's Shows Also today we're honored to have the Steve Weiss himself on the show to talk about all the amazing shows they're producing at Zacuto and what you can expect next. We also have Mike Duval back from LensProToGo. Today Mike talks some more about using Zeiss compact primes. Consider this a part 2 to last week's segment. Lastly we have the first in a series of featured artists from Triple Scoop Music. I'm really excited about this segment because it'll be fun to share some amazing bands I've found on their site and give you some ideas on how to incorporate them into your productions. Because he gives great info about how to be a filmmaker. 2. He's an extremely talented filmmaker in his own right. 3. He's very funny. and 4. He's a really nice and down to earth guy to boot. In this episode we cover: How he got into filmmaking The job he had before starting FilmRiot Whether or not it's important to attend film school His experience at Full Sail His future And much, more more. Lastly, you want to make sure you listen past the end credits. It's a riot. Today we have Rachel Kenton from Zacuto talking about their cool new DSLR rig "The Scorpion." There's also some cool savings on Zacuto gear. Gotta listen to get the code. We also have Mike Duval back from LensProToGo. Today Mike talks about the benefits of using a Zeiss CP.2 prime lens. Ep. #53: Mesh Flinders - co-creator of LonelyGirl15 | In June of 2006, a teen-age home-schooled girl took to the YouTube "airwaves" to talk about life, boys, parents, and the trial and tribulations of life online. Millions of viewers tuned in regularly to have a peek into this young lady's life. The only thing is. This "teen" wasn't a teen. And her life wasn't real. This was LonelyGirl15, a scripted show with lights, producer, director and the whole nine yards. Today we have the writer co-creator of the show, Mesh Flinders. Today Mesh talks about his life growing up on an Ashram and the irony of the fact that despite growing up sheltered from a lot of pop-culture, he ended up co-creating one of the biggest pop-culture sensations of the decade. We also talk about social media and how online distribution has affected movie making today. This is a jam-packed episode that will educate and entertain. Commercials as Good as the Super Bowl We're excited to have three terrific companies to help support the show with sponsorships: LensProToGo.com, Zacuto and Triple Scoop MusicBut don't worry. If you know me, I always strive to think outside the box. So the sponsorship segments during the show will not be your traditional fair. Expect them to be educational and/or entertaining! #52 - PressPausePlay Directors Victor Köhler & David Dworsky | A few weeks ago I watched a documentary that I believe every visual artist and musician needs to see. Today! It is called PressPausePlay and it's a look at the digital revolution through the eyes of some amazing artists and marketers, not the least of which Moby and Seth Godin. Today I'm honored to have on the show, all the way from Sweden, the co-directors of the film Victor Köhler and David Dworsky. David and Victor share with us how they, with no formal film school training, and at the tender ages of just 24 and 26 and in just five years have grown their company to take on clients like Ericsson and Kraft and have been able to travel the world to make this documentary. (And guess what. They used to shoot weddings too.) A very inspirational episode. An even more inspirational film. Episode #51 - Matt Jeppsen | Today's guest is a man who knows his stuff. To sit and listen to him prattle off filmmaking tech jargon is like listening to "klingon." I've poked fun over the past couple weeks at this "geek talk," most openly in a recent episode of The Flip Side. I'm speaking of none other than Matt Jeppsen of FreshDV.com. We have a great conversation about the terms we filmmakers call ourselves, Matt's journey from IT to filmmaker, the start of FreshDV.com, the importance of differentiating yourself as a creative, and so much more. (NOTE: at one point in this interview I say Russel Crowe when I meant to say Russell Carpenter. Aggh! Sorry. Total slip!) Matt is such an eloquent guest. You will thoroughly enjoy this one! Episode #50: Vincent Laforet | November 3, 2011 was quite a whirlwind of a day for filmmakers all across the world. The stills camera manufacturer that unintentionally launched a new era in filmmaking with the 5D Mark II-Canon-made an announcement of a new camera body: the EOS C300. Today on the show we have one of the few filmmakers allowed to make a pre-production short film on the camera; the man who is largely responsible for the aforementioned digital filmmaking evolution-Mr. Vincent Laforet himself. As is customary, we cover topics in this podcast that go beyond just the gear. We talk about Vincent's use of the camera for sure. But also his journey from photographer to DP to Director. He gives us an insightful look at what it's like for Hollywood directors that makes some of them so volatile to work with. He also gives some behind the scenes 411 on the making of his C300 film, "Mobius" (We also learn what legenday filmmaker Martin Scorcese said about the film). You will not want to miss this, the 50th episode of the show. Today we have the head coach of wedding filmmaking, Matt Davis of Life Stage Films. You may remember Matt as the guy behind my post "the best wedding video promo on the planet." He's only been in the business for about five years, but in that time he as grown to become a 3-time EventDV Top 25 videographer, and has a very successful studio in Wilmington, NC. Today we learn about how he went from shooting a video for the non-profit Samaritan's Purse, to diving head first into the wild, weird world of weddings. Episode #48: Kris Simmons | Today we start a 2-part mini series on running a successful video business. We have two of the countries top video business coaches coming on the show. This week we have commercial video producer and the coach behind Mind Your Video Business, Kris Simmons. Kris started out in this business shooting for other studios. It wasn't long before he was making more money than he was at his full time job. So he started his own studio. In the past 11 years he has seen the whole gamut, from shooting weddings to shooting for Fortune 500 companies. At one point his business was generating about $1 million in revenue. This man knows his stuff! I know you all love to hear about gear and gadgets, but this episode and next week's with Matt Davis are two you need to listen to very carefully...over...and over...and over. Episode 47: Jared Abrams | No, this is not a title for a groundbreaking Supreme Court ruling. It's a reference to today's guest guest and the documentary film he's shooting. Jared is a seasoned filmmaker and cinematographer (and he can really call himself that as he's worked extensively with actual 35mm films). He's co-founder of Wide Open Camera in Los Angeles, CA and has been a major contributor of knowledge and gear to the burgeoning DSLR filmmaking crowd, reporting for the popular site Cinema5D, and selling various gear though his company. Today we learn about his amazing career. Did you know he started working on Levar Burton's "Reading Rainbow?" I bet you didn't. (See what amazing information this show brings you? :) Or that he originally studied forestry. He went on to camera assist for the likes of such documentary filmmakers as Albert Maisel and even Errol Morris. Now Jared is getting into the director's chair for his own documentary film, "The Board of Education," a look at capital punishment in the U.S. school system. He is hip deep into his Kickstarter campaign and will talk about crowd-funding as well as filmmaking. This is an episode chock full of great info! Episode #46: Steve and Laura Moses | Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, greetings and salutations. Today I have for you royalty in the flesh. The Duke and Duchess of wedding filmmaking (or, are they the king and queen, not quite sure) - Steve and Laura Moses of Vantage Point Custom Films. If you work with your spouse in your business, this is a must listen to episode. Steve and Laura have been named to the EventDV Top 25 Event Videographers in the industry for five consecutive years. They've won who knows how many other awards. They speak at conventions and teach on everything from beautiful cinematography to how to run a successful business. And they should know. Steve's been doing this since 1982 (no, that is not a typo) and Laura's been part of the team since their nuptials in '84. So they've seen just about everything. When you've been in business that long, you have ton of wisdom to share, and I'm so honored to have them on the show to share it. To top it all off, they're a hoot! Episode #45: Robin Schmidt aka El Skid | Today my series on YouTube/Online filmmakers comes to a close with UK filmmaker Robin Schmidt (aka "El Skid"). Robin is an very talented, award-winning filmmaker who has a ton of experience with music videos and producing high quality commercial and broadcast work (although he still doesn't think he's good enough to enter into film festivals). He also has quite a bit of experience dealing with YouTube and playing the game. Today on the show we discuss how a whole lot of stuff. Does it make sense to go to film festivals (you may be surprised at his answer). The dynamics of the Vimeo and YouTube community. His take on the quality of work in the field right now. And why he refuses to call himself a Director of Photography. This is one of those rich conversations that just couldn't stop. Over 75 minutes of inspiration and education. He also has a very funny answer to my signature question at the end of the interview. | 9/29/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #44: Matt Koval | YouTube has become so much more than just a site filled with viral videos of cute kittens or toddlers stoned on laughing gas. It's a place where some amazing filmmakers go post work that is highly entertaining and inspirational. Today I continue my series on online filmmakers with Matt Koval, one of the winners of YouTube's NextUp contest. Matt has garnered quite a following and name for himself, particularly because of his comedy series "The Fuplers" (see an episode on the blog post for this episode). In this episode we learn about how Matt got his start in the biz working for Gracie Films (makers of "The Simpsons"). He goes on to talk about making the decision from working in Hollywood to becoming a school teacher to doing his own thing, making "The Fuplers," his advice about film school, and much more. Episode #43: The Bui Brothers | Unless you've been living under a social media rock, chances are, if you're in the film or photography industry, you've heard of my guests today. They are Lan and Vu, the brothers Bui. Today we have a jam-packed show that continues my online filmmakers series. The Bui Brothers have made a huge impact on the industry offering education about DSLR filmmaking and social media marketing specifically as it relates to photography and video. Today we get the 4-1-1 on their pre-photography/filmmaker lives, how they got into professional visual artistry, tips on using social media video distribution channels, and so much more. This is one of the last few episodes where my last "signature" question was still about the movie Inception. You'll get a kick out of our discussion about it. 9-11 Tenth Anniversary Special - F-Stop Beyond with Jason Groupp | Today's podcast is a special upload to commemorate the tenth anniversary of 9/11. This is actually an old episode of my previous podcast, F-Stop Beyond (essentially, the photographers version of Crossing the 180; or rather, Crossing the 180 is the filmmakers' version of that podcast). At the time of this recording, it was the 7th anniversary of that fateful day. In this episode, I interview NY photographer and lifetime New Yorker, Jason Groupp. This is a truncated episode from the original as we discuss how the event of Sept 11, 2001 affected Jason, his family, friends, and his photography. In loving memory of all who lost or gave their lives that day. | 9/9/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #42: Koo of NoFilmSchool.com | Koos is a filmmaker after my own heart. He shares great content every day on his popular blog NoFilmSchool.com. He's passionate about the craft. He's created a Webby Award-winning film series. He has one of the best resources for beginning DSLR filmmakers I've seen...and it's FREE. And he has a great radio voice! All of these things make for an excellent podcast interview. Today we learn about how he cleverly got a job with MTV (despite having no experience for the job), how he was "homeless" for up to ten months in order to pursue the creation of his blog, and we'll learn about everthing he's putting into the creation of his first feature film "Man Child." He's conducting one of the most aggressive, yet potentially most effective Kickstarter campaigns for a film that I've seen. In fact, Koo's work with online video content and marketing plays great into the series I started before my social media sabbatical - online video distribution. (Go to koo.co/manchild if you want to learn more about his film and possibly support it). If after hearing this interview you don't get up on go make a film, well, you're a lost cause. Next week on the show, we continue my online video distribution filmmaker series with those silly cinematic siblings, The Bui Brothers. | 9/8/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #41: Patrick Moreau, Kevin Shahinian and Joe Simon Pt. 2 | You've waited patiently for a whole month. Now it's the moment you've all been waiting for. The gripping conclusion to my provocative, educational and inspirational interview with the DSLR Three Amigos: Patrick Moreau of StillMotion, Kevin Shahinian of Pacific Pictures and Joe Simon of Joe Simon Films. This episode is a doozy! When we last left our heroes in part 1, I had just asked Kevin his opinion of WEVA (the Wedding and Event Videographers Association). In this episode we discuss WEVA, the use of copyrighted music in event cinema, company sponsorships and if they represent a conflict of interest, what makes a filmmaker a true "professional," working with spouses, and we learn once and for all if Kevin is an eligible bachelor. These three will be teaching at their Event Cinema workshop this fall starting in early October. If you've done even a modicum of research in the field of DSLR filmmaking, you know who these guys are. Patrick Moreau, Kevin Shahinian and Joe Simon are names practically synonymous with the craft. And today on Crossing the 180 we have all three of them at once. They are the DSLR 3 Amigos and in anticipation of their Event Cinema Workshop coming this fall, they have agreed to come under fire (so to speak) and answer a wide variety of questions about the business. Yesterday we collected questions from the world wide web. With your questions, combined with a few selected questions of my own, we cover the gamut. Stealing/copying work. Inspiration. Education. Film school. No film school. Their toughest challenges. And so much more. Two whole hours in total. Today is part 1. Part 2 is coming...well, you'll just have to listen to the podcast to find out. Episode #39 - Tom Antos | We've come to the end of our international excursion of interviewing foreign filmmakers. It's been quite a ride. Today's guest brings us back to North America to Toronto, ONT. In fact, our guest today is the perfect bridge between the foreign filmmaker series and the next series I'm doing on YouTubers. Today we have Tom Antos. Tom has a popular YouTube show where he goes behind the scenes of his amazing music videos and other films to educate viewers. In fact, that's how he got started. People just started asking him on YouTube how he did things and he started making videos to show them. Now his channel gests tens of thousands of views each week. He's also been able to hook up with some big names in the YouTuber-verse, like DeStorm. Be sure you check out the DeStorm video "Famous Movies in One Take" on the blog. It is crazy! He talks about how he made it, as well as how he got into filmmaking. Tom also offers some value insight into the Vimeo vs. YouTube discussion that I've honestly never considered before. I think you'll find this whole conversation intriguing and inspiring. | 7/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode #38 - Patryk Kizny | Where in the world is Crossing the 180 today? Poland. Today we have on the show, timelapse guru and HDR video expert Patryk Kizny of Looky Creative. His collection of work has been viewed millions of times on Vimeo and once you see it, you'll know why. When I first saw his film "The Chapel," (see on the blog post) I could swear it was a computer generation. I say that in a good way. Not because it looks "fake," but because the HDR textures were so intriguing, they kind of had the "Lord of the Rings" look. He is that rare breed of patient filmmaker that can sit and wait for frames to tick off, one by one, all night long, to create amazing art. Patryk will share a little bit about the making of "The Chapel," how he got into timelapse in the first place, and some insight into shooting HDR video. If timelapse and HDR video is something you're interested in, you want to listen to this episode. Episode #37 - Adad Warda | Where in the world is Crossing the 180 today? Well, today we head to the capital of the Czech Republic, Prague. As we continue our series on foreign filmmakers, Adad Warda. Adad is actually a transplant to Prague by way of the San Francisco Bay Area. After re-locating there with a business partner in 2008, he never looked back. I have him on the show today because he's working on a magnificent project that I think holds so much promise for the future of online content creation. It's an interactive book and video series called "Sky City Haya," an eclectic mix of film noir intrigue, and sci-fi wonder. You won't want to miss this episode. In addition to learning about the making of this fascinating project, Adad shares his career path, his inspiration, and some ins and outs of working with crowd-sourcing site Kickstarter. Also on the show is Adad's conceptual designer for "Sky City Haya," Clementine Amiraux sharing her thoughts on the interactive e-book series. Lastly, Adad makes an astute observation about the movie "Inception" that has never been made before on the show. Episode #36 - Den Lennie of F-Stop Academy | Today I'm continuing my mini series on foreign filmmakers. Today our "plane" lands in the UK with Scottish filmmaker Den Lennie, founder of ;F-Stop Academy . Den is a man after my own heart. A 20+ year veteran in the business, Den's career dates back to the time when cameras weighed hundreds of kilos (I'm speaking foreign talk. ;) (BTW, his first paid gig was shooting a wedding for about 100 pounds.) I like Den so much because despite being a talented artist, like me, he knows and values the importance of having a keen business mind if you want to make a living in this business. He started F-Stop Academy with DSLR guru Philip Bloom (who has since had to leave the partnership due to time constraints). Through F-Stop Academy, Den teaches filmmakers not only the creative aspects of filmmaking, but his periodic emails also include great business advice for professional videographers and filmmakers. You're going to love this episode.Den gets down and dirty and opens up about how he always wanted to be a television camera man. Not a filmmaker, but a TV cameraman. From there he's traveled the world, worked for the BBC, is a leading instructor and a highly sought after filmmaker. He worked closely with Sony on designing the NEX FS100. The work he did creating the first public video shot with the camera (see below) led to some awesome gigs, including filming the current Duran Duran concert. (Yes, THAT Duran Duran.) He shares with us his thoughts on whether or not a formal film school education is important, and he gives some great inspiration and education for you filmmakers and videographers who want to make a living at this. Episode #35 - Nino Leitner - Austrian Filmmaker Extraordinaire | Today I start a mini-series on foreign filmmakers (i.e. filmmakers working outside the U.S.) When it comes to the world of filmmaking, the beautiful country of Austria has given us a wonderful artist. No, I'm not talking about the ex-Govenator of California. Of couse, I'm talking about none other than Mr. Nino Leitner. The son of creative artists (his parents owned an ad agency), he grew up with a love and appreciation for the arts. He realized early that filmmaking was the direction he wanted, and after graduating from high school in 2001 (ugh, I feel old) he pursued the craft in college. Right out of college he started freelancing and since then he's been a filmmaker for hire. Then about a year or so ago he got the opportunity to do the first online review of Canon's T2i/550D. The video he made was picked up by Engadget, Gizmodo, and others, and his blog became an instant hit. Since then his blog has become a wonderful resource for gear reviews and filmmaking inspiration. And Nino's star has risen tremendously (he has about 20,000 Twitter followers.) In this engaging interview, we cover everything from how he works with his clients (you'll love my Brady Bunch flashback), how we quotes a job, how he picks his equipment (he's shot with everything from a T2i to the RED One), his views on sponsorship, gear-lust, what inspires him as a filmmaker, how he got where he is today, and of course he chimes in on my "Inception" question. (Hear why that movie was so annoying to him. Here's a link to the College Humor video he referenced). I could've talked with Nino forever. The time will fly as you listen to this great interview. Episode 031: Jennifer Moon & Reagan Zugelter | What do you get when you take about 30 women visual artists (give or take) on a cruise to the Bahamas? Well, today we're going to find out as my guests are Jennifer Moon of Northernlights Fillmworks and Regan Zugelter of Studio Z Films. They are the co-founders of The POSH Retreat, an exotic and inspirational journey for the female filmmaker (try saying female filmmaker ten times fast!). Today marks our second episode in a series on women filmmakers. Jen and Reagan will share how they got into this biz, how they balance work and family, and their take on the state of women in this industry. Regardless of whether you have two X-chromosomes or an X and a Y, I am confident you will be inspired by their story.Bumper music for this show is "Tater City" by Glenn Shambroom, part of the TRUE ROMANCE collection, courtesy of ;Triple Scoop Music . | 4/29/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 030: Kristen Souders of Bliss Productions | The first time I ever met Kristen* it was like meeting a celebrity. It was around 2003 or so. Kristen* was the owner/operator and creative muscle behind Bliss Video Productions (now just Bliss Productions), perhaps the premier wedding and event film studio in the San Francisco Bay Area at the time. When I had started in the biz a year earlier, hers was only one of two wedding studios in the Bay Area that impressed me. I wanted to be like K*.Now 11 years later we're friends and fellow speakers on the video circuit. Today I have the honor having her a guest on my podcast (and you have the extreme pleasure of hearing her. This marks my first in a series on women filmmakers. In this episode, 4-time EventDV Top 25 inductee Kristen* shares how she went from a student of photography to set dresser to wedding filmmaker to the stars. Kristen is eloquent, funny, passionate, and knows her stuff. She gives us her take on the state of the industry, the importance of design and brand, and she gives great advice on how to deal with managing contractors for your studio. I won't be surprised if you mark this as one of your favorite episodes.Bumper music for this show is "Tater City" by Glenn Shambroom, part of the TRUE ROMANCE collection, courtesy of ; . | 4/22/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 029: Kirby Ferguson - Everything is a Remix | In light of the past two days' topics related to style, it seems only fitting that today's guest on Crossing the 180 is a filmmaker who has created a film series specifically about how there's nothing new under the sun. Kirby Ferguson's " " is a 4-part documentary exploring how much of today's art is in many ways a mish-mash of what's come before it. Part 1 was about the music industry. Part 2 the film industry. Parts 3 and 4 will come out later this year, but with over 750,000 combined views on Vimeo already, EIAR is already a huge hit. And it's all just a personal project of this NY based filmmaker. In this candid interview we learn how this English major turned graphic designer with no formal film education got to wear he is today. We learn about the process he goes through creating EIAR and his take on how one can (or cannot) make a living at creating work like this. A very insightful interview. And of course he answers my signature "Inception" question: does the top fall or not? Episode 028: Drea Cooper of California is a Place | One of the hottest film series on Vimeo is a set of short documentaries about interesting people in California. California is a Place looks at the lives of a wide variety of characters: from a washed up used car salesman, to a couple of die-hard patriots risking life and limb to protect our borders from drug smugglers, to a guy who makes high-end sex dolls for a living. Their latest film, "Uppercut," is about a real-life gentleman's fight club in Silicon Valley. Collectively the films have over 1.6 million views on Vimeo. The brain children behind it are photographer Zackary Canepari, and today's guest, filmmaker Drea (pronounced "dray") Cooper . If I may quote that rhythmical orator, "I'm going back to Cali, to Cali, to Cali. I'm going back to Cali...I don't think so." (Actually, I do think so.) Today Drea talks about how we went from shooting videos at high school to his progression as successful commercial filmmaker shooting videos for such companies as K-Swiss and Ray Ban. You'll be inspired by his "Freedom Writers" style story teaching urban kids in Hunter's Point in the San Fran Bay Area. And the amazing success with the CIAP series is sure to make you get up off your butt and make that opus you've been putting off for so long. And of course, he answers the "Inception" question. | 3/31/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 027: Jesse Rosten of iPad+Velcro Fame | Have you ever wondered about all the amazing things you could do with your iPad if you just put your mind to it? Well, so did today's guest, and that wonderment garnered him online video fame, as well as, as far as I know, the only non-commissioned personal video on Apple's website touting one of their products (since the release of iPad 2, Apple has taken down the video from their website. But it's still on Vimeo and you can see it below). Today we have Jesse Rosten , creator of the famous iPad+Velcro video. Jesse is a photographer and filmmaker out of Redding, CA doing the kind of work that just makes your mouth drool. In addition to the iPad+Velcro video, a couple of my favorites of his are "Growing is Forever "-an very meta look at CA redwoods set to a hauntingly beautiful poem-and "Cart "-a touching story about a shopping cart and the boy he's trying to find. Those three videos alone have over 1.75 million views among them. I have no doubt you'll be inspired after hearing this riveting interview. Oh, and of course, he share his take on the end of "Inception."*Show note: At one point in the episode I say "I had a wife that worked at Apple." That was a total slip. I meant I have a wife who used to work at Apple. I've only been married once and I'm still happily married to her. :)Bumper music for this show is "Tater City" by Glenn Shambroom, part of the TRUE ROMANCE collection, courtesy of ;Triple Scoop Music . | 3/25/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Episode 026: Ryan Booth | I continue my series of interviews with Vimeo/Canon "Beyond the Still " filmmakers with today's interview of Chapter 5 winner Ryan Booth . That's right, today I have on someone who was actually one of the winners . Ryan is somewhat of a Renaissance man. He started out as a history major, then became an audio engineer, then picked up photography, all before becoming the amazing filmmaker he is today. He was even an actor for a while. However, he primarily considers himself a storyteller. In this engaging interview, Ryan talks about his path to filmmaker, the importance of doing personal work (like his one-take music video film series "Serial Box Presents "), the making of his "Beyond the Still" entry, and what it was like working on the final chapter with Vincent Laforet . With regards to my now signature closing question, Ryan has one of the most interesting theories about the end of "Inception" I've yet heard. Episode 025: Kenny Mosher | The Canon/Vimeo Beyond the Still film contest was a groundbreaking experiment in group storytelling. One of the contestants from the first round of finalists was my guest for today, Kenny Mosher of Showdown Visuals. The film he submitted was "Alderwood" and for the longest time it was a favorite to win. Unfortunately, in the 11th hour, another film took the prize. But I was so impressed with the storytelling and cinematography of "Alderwood" I just had to bring the filmmaker on the show. Today Kenny shares how his German class got him into filmmaking. We also have a deep and poignant conversation about how we as artists make decisions regarding the work we take when a paying gig may go against our sensibilities. He tells us about the making of his Vimeo contest entry and he shares how he balances his faith with work. And of course, we get his profound answer to my "Inception" question: does the top fall? Episode 024: Scott Brignac | This week on the show I'm starting a mini-series on filmmakers who have had success creating personal film projects. Over the next few weeks I'll have some of the contestants of Vimeo and Canon's "Beyond the Still " film contest.First up is Scott Brignac . Scott was the only filmmaker who actually made it into the final film TWICE during the series run. In this episode Scott talks about how, with no film school or filmmaking experience, he broke into the business and how films like the ones he did for "Beyond the Still" have paid off for his business. He also talks about his current project to create a visual film series to accompany Derek Webb 's new instrumental album "Feedback." We also get his answer to my Inception question: at the end, does the top fall or not. Episode 023: Brandon McCormick | I'm happy to bring back to the show fellow Atlanta filmmaker Brandon McCormick or Whitestone Motion Pictures . (You can hear my first interview with Brandon on episode #4 ). I've asked Brandon back to talk about his latest film, "The Candy Shop: A Fairytale About the Sexual Exploitation of Children." It's a dark subject that is covered in a unique way. You might see such a topic covered more traditionally in a documentary format. But Brandon doesn't do documentaries (although he loves them). He tells fictional stories. Today we get to hear the real life amazing story of the three year journey to bring this film to fruition. It was recently one of the four finalists in the Doorpost Film Festival. As always, Brandon's passion and eloquence is sure to inspire you. This is more than a film, it's a movement. In this episode, Bradley talk about his career, the making of the film, his success as a filmmaker even though he admittedly doesn't know any of the tech stuff, and why there seems to be so much amazing filmmaking talent in Texas.
