Funny!
If you like podcasts like The Nerdist, Comedy Death Ray Radio, or Comedy and Everything Else where comedians talk about different things; you'll enjoy this podcast. This podcast works because the comedians seems to have a great dynamic and really work well together.
I've been a big fan of stand-up comedy for years and have gone to many many shows. But some of the funniest things I've ever heard come from overhearing the comics talk to each other off-stage. This podcast captures that situation really well!
I'm going to be in Seattle next month and listening to this podcast makes me want to watch their stand-up!
Insightful
As of this writing there have been 43 Delicious Mediocrity podcasts, the last 24 of which star co-hosts Derek Sheen and Douglas Gale, plus a weekly guest.
If you are new to this podcast you should do yourself a favor and start with episode 12 and work your way up. The hosts have been known to tell listeners that the show really didn't become easily listenable until around episode 12, because mostly what occurs up until that point is a bunch of guys sitting around yelling, and trying to talk over one another. Because the hosts themselves have repeatedly tried to steer new listeners away from these first few episodes there really isn't much more for me to say about them.
Although the show is maturing, the guys aren't settling down. Things may not get as completely out of control as they did early on, but the content of the show is far from predictable (aside for the fact that a conversation will be taking place). Informality is a strength for Delicious Mediocrity. You never get the feeling that the hosts are sitting down with a comedian they've never heard of, asking prepared questions which they've scribbled down on a 3x5 card, asking for by-the-numbers factoids that might have been drudged up from Wikipedia. This informality allows the guests to really open up and talk about the real day to day life of a comedian, it also allows them to kick back and be themselves. For the most part this is a really great thing, because most of the guests are immeasurably fun to listen to.
Other comedy podcasts out there feature hosts or guests that will spend sixty straight minutes talking less about themselves and their craft than they do simply tearing apart other comedians they don't like (comedy can be very competitive, and elitist, by its very nature), but because of the location of this podcast there's isn't nearly as much of that here. This is a Seattle based podcast, and as such the ambiance is one of comedians that stick together and have eachother's backs. That isn't to say that some hack won't be called out for what he is, but this show doesn't dwell on it the whole hour.
Production values for the show vary depending on the era you're listening too, with later episodes becoming much tighter and clearer than when the show first hit the net. The only exception to this is when the guys take their show on the road and speak to various comedians back stage in the green room of a show, or even down in LA for several episodes. Sound quality may occasionally suffer for it, because of what might be going on in the background, but never does the show become unlistenable. What you're getting instead is a huge reward in the form of an interview with folks in their element, either right before or after their sets. This is a great time to catch many of these folks, before they have a chance to wind down and decompress, you're catching them at their peak performance.
The only real downside to the show is that occasionally things will revert to 30-60 straight minutes of riffing and sing-song, with no actual insight or conversation being had on comedy itself. This can often be a fun diversion, because let's face it, most comedians are funny people on or off the stage – but occasionally things start to sound like nothing more than three guys sitting around getting drunk. Instances like this are rare, but on the rare occasion where it happens you can either skip forward or move on to the next installment.
There are too many good episodes to list, so I will stick to three of my favorites:
Episode 29 with Gabriel Rutledge
Episode 36 with Eddie Brill
Episode 42 with Jaqi Furback
I'm sleeping with Delicious Mediocrity
Best podcast in the universe. Every night I curl up in my $4,000 blanket and listen to the podcast. And since I am not much of a "reader", this works out just fine. If you wanna hear true stories how painful and dangerous stand up comedy can be, listen to Delicious Mediocrity.
If you only listen to ONE podcast this year, well...listen to the one that I am on. Man I am funny.
