Graduation, Staying Connected, and Starting New: Episode 61 | To mark the close of the Spring semester of year two of the EMSEduCast we asked Chris Le Baudour to lead the conversation about saying goodbye to a finishing EMT or paramedic class and to discuss using the summer to reflect and recharge. Chris is a long-time EMS educator, author of six EMT textbooks, frequent presenter at EMS conferences, and a board member of the National Association of EMS Educators. Chris talked about his strategies to wrap-up an EMT class, stay connected with his students through email and class groups, and how he relates to different types of students. Central to Chris' techniques is a strong commitment to teaching and leading in the affective domain. We also discussed the importance of schools having a connection with alumni for student recruitment, instructor assistants, and for the pride that comes from knowing the great things former students are accomplishing as EMS professionals. We discussed how a learning management system, a Facebook group, or even an email group could be used as the foundation of a paramedic program alumni association. Our conversation concluded with recommendations for using the summer to recharge for the coming school year. Chris and each of the hosts shared recommendations for books to read during the summer. Teaching Technology: Episode 51 | EMS educators have the dual responsibility of teaching technology and teaching with technology. The conversation on Episode 51 of the EMSEduCast begins with a discussion about using e-readers like the Kindle and the iPad. Then Greg, Bill, and Rob with comments and questions from the live audience talked about the need for educators to teach computer skills, educator comfort and anxiety with teaching and technology, student access to computers and information, and the growing presence of social media as a teaching opportunity, but also a distraction. We are interested in your answers to some of these questions: * Would you use a textbook that was available as an ebook for the Kindle or iPad? * Should students be allowed to use a smartphone or laptop during lectures? * What technology do you want to incorporate into your EMS classroom but don't know where to start? Great resource!
This is the very first podcast I ever downloaded, now I'm following 5 different EMS ones every week, following Twitter constantly, and reading or listening for probably 2 hours every day! Your podcast is so casual and easy to follow, there's no excuse not to listen to it. Thanks for a quality program that has encouraged me to step up and become better educated in this field.
