Podcast Description
Kingdom by the Sea explores the history, reviews the debate and considers the future of Fort Monroe as the U.S. Army plans to vacate in 2011. Since the early 1600’s, a series of fortifications has guarded the Hampton Roads waterways, but none lasted long until the impregnable Fort Monroe was built between 1819 and 1834. Referred to as the “Gibraltar of the Chesapeake” and “Freedom’s Fortress,” Fort Monroe has long stood as a symbol of American freedom and fortitude.
