| 65 | VideoSuper Smash Bros Melee Video Review | Here is GamersCast's written (well, typed) review of Super Smash Brothers Melee: ____________________________________________ A mere 3 years after the original and just after the Gamecube launch, Nintendo released the sequel to their immensely popular Super Smash Brothers, with Super Smash Brothers Melee. So, what has changed since the original? Well, the feel of the overall gameplay stays true to the original, but has also become much quicker in pace and and even more hectic. In fact, after you've played this game, playing the original again, makes if feel slow and lagging. It's that crazy! However, the feel isn't entirely original, as each character has their own weight and feeling in the game. Yes, some characters do feel almost exactly like the others, but for the most part the characters have their own individual attributes. And speaking of the characters, there's over two dozen of them, more than twice as many as the previous title. But as in the last title each character has the same number of moves as before, with the exception of new evasive manuevers that each character has. So, now in addition to the basic shield, you also have a standard sidestep and rolling dodge. But even the shield itslef has been upgraded, by having the strength and size of your shield depend upon how hard you press the shoulder button. This adds a surprisingly large amount of variety and strategy to the gameplay. The single player mode also contains the arcade-like mode seen in the original, along with a new adventure mode. This doesn't add much to the game, and doesn't follow any sort of set story, but is amusing and a nice addition all the same. The adventure mode has single battles, sidescrolling levels, and even certain missions like "Escape from Brinstar" or "Find the Triforce", but the adventure mode is the exact same everytime. But the classic mode is randomized, though it too follows the same general scheme every time you play. But single player goes further beyond the solo camaigns (if you can call them that), there's also loads of new single player content to enjoy in the Stadium. In the Stadium, there's loads of mini-games to choose from. Gone is the days of "Board the Platforms", since it essentially was the same as Break the Targets (which is still here), but now we also have Event Matches, Homerun Contest, and Multi-Man Melee. Event Matches you can consider a "mission mode", you have to complete a certain objective within the given constraints. This can be very fun, and the game keeps a record of your best runs. There are 51 event matches in all. Also new is the homerun contest. In the homerun contest, you have to beat the living hell out of a sandbag and smash it as far as you can, within 10 seconds (they give you a homerun bat to use). This can be very exciting and challenging all the same, and is yet another welcomed edition to Smash Brothers. And last is Multi-Man Melee, which you can choose 6 different subcategories to choose from. But ultimately, the object of all these is to either see how quickly you can beat a set number of enemies, see how long you can survive, or see how many enemies you can beat within the time limit. All of these options have you fighting against the fighting polygon team (upto 5 can be on-screen at once), and are very fun with loads of replay value. But of course, Smash Brothers is always known for one thing: the multiplayer. And this game doesn't disappoint. Unlike the limited options you had in the original, in this game there are dozens upon dozens of multiplayer options. All of them work beautifully, except for the very less than intuitive camera mode, which the camera is controlled entirely by the fourth player, and screen shots can only be taken when you are in the special mode, when support easily could have been integrated into the pause menu. GamersCast Gaming Update: Brawl News | Sorry I wasn't able to do the gaming update last week, I had a bit of a cold. And even though I sound a bit stuffy still here, here's your latest gaming updates from the past two weeks! Surprisingly, almost all of it had to do with Super Smash Brothers Brawl.... - Site Updates - Episode 27 this weekend - Brawl tournament opens March 7th - Rockstar loses lawsuit A while back ago Rockstar Games lost a lawsuit because of the infamous Hot Coffee mod. And now depending upon what you have left from the purchase of this game you can get as much as $35 in cash, or as little as a replacement disc. Check their official website for details. GTAsettlement.com - According to Engaget.con (usually reliable) Sony is soon planning on ridding themselves of the 80 GB PS3 and replacing it with a 120 or possibly 160GB model instead with DualShock 3 controller. All is unconfirmed yet convincing. However, this may cause the PS3 to lose its semi-affordable pricing. Nice one Kaz! - Sony has released firmware version 3.90 for their PSP. This is available to all PSP owners via network download and comes bundled with the VOIP program, Skype. Of course, you'll need a $20 PSP headset to use it. Oh wait, did I say "all PSP owners"? I meant to say PSP Slim owners get Skype and you also need a memory stick to use it. (Kaz sure is on a roll...) But the update also gives everyone expanded PSN support! Oh yeah, one more thing its only out in Japan right now, since Sony's having some sort of problem, but by the time you see this, it should be out in Europe and the US....should. - An official RockBand Microphone has been released to store shelves for $50, but what's interesting about this "higher quality" mic is that the packaging says it's compatible with Wii. Virtual Console Update: - 1080 Snowboarding (N64: 1000 Wii Points) Smash Bros. Update: - Ask Iwata Concludes 30x more music than normal games Each character has been given hundreds upon hundreds of unique attributes designed just for them, so every character is unique, unlike the "clone characters" seen in Melee. - Complete List of "out of the box" available music tracks (only 4 original tracks) - Screen shots of menu, character selection screen, and Brawl Option screen - Super Smash Brothers Brawl released in Japan on Thursday (technically mid-Wednesday from the time difference) - It was announced that the Smash Bros. Dojo will now become more of a game guide for the game, rather than a place for information, and as updates will now contain spoilers, we will no longer be reporting on news from the Smash Bros. Dojo So if you don't mind being spoiled, check out SmashBros.com on weekdays. Updates will continue for only two more months. - Intro Trailer revealed for Brawl, now downloadable on podcast feed - In the Japanese release, Brawl broke the 24 hour sales record at over 500,000 copies! Now this may not sound like much compared to the US record set by Halo 3, but also keep in mind Japan is over 26 times smaller than the US! Not to mention, it was reported most gamers couldn't even find the game, as it was virtually sold out everywhere, with people having camped out for days. Also sold out were Gamecube Controllers, so you might wanna pick up one of them now. - Many images and videos from Japan confirm Brawl's roster is 35 characters (technically 39) - Japan has dirty Wiis! Many Japanese gamers have reported they were unable to play Brawl, and Nintendo says the issue is dirty Wiis! However, if you want Nintendo to wipe your dirty Wii clean, you can find details on the Nintendo of Japan homepage. - Brawl is quickly becoming one of the hardest games to find of all- time. A quick search on eBay shows that some copies are going for over $300! And people are actually bidding that much: for a $50 game. However half of these bidders were found to be Americans.... PDF file of the schedule is now available for download on the podcast feed. - No more downloadable Gears of War content (rumors of Epic starting new project are spreading as the reason) It has been over 6 months since last Gears download - Grand Theft Auto IV dated for an April 29, 2008 release for both the PS3 and the 360, though exclusive downloads for the game will be available on the 360 shortly after release. - Smash Brothers Dojo Manaphy causes you to switch bodies with your opponent Ask Iwata Interview on Wii.com told the origins of Braw Mushroomy Kingdom was revealed. This stage shows the modern day world 1-1 from SMB in ruins. Also World 1-2 may occassionally load instead. Mushroom Kingdom Grand Theme was revealed, written by none other than Koji Kondo! Although, podcast had its problems at first, it seems to be quite the growing podcast, and I can tell that soon we will be able to expect something great to come of it!
