    A New Year’s Prayer

    A New Year’s Prayer

    Psalm 123 (ESV)

    Our Eyes Look to the Lord Our God

    A Song of Ascents.

    123 To you I lift up my eyes,

        O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

    2 Behold, as the eyes of servants

        look to the hand of their master,

    as the eyes of a maidservant

        to the hand of her mistress,

    so our eyes look to the Lord our God,

        till he has mercy upon us.

    3 Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,

        for we have had more than enough of contempt.

    4 Our soul has had more than enough

        of the scorn of those who are at ease,

        of the contempt of the proud.

    Hebrews 1:1-3 (ESV)

    The Supremacy of God's Son

    1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,

    Isaiah 45:14-25 (ESV)

    The Lord, the Only Savior

    14 Thus says the Lord:

    “The wealth of Egypt and the merchandise of Cush,

        and the Sabeans, men of stature,

    shall come over to you and be yours;

        they shall follow you;

        they shall come over in chains and bow down to you.

    They will plead with you, saying:

        ‘Surely God is in you, and there is no other,

        no god besides him.’”

    15 Truly, you are a God who hides himself,

        O God of Israel, the Savior.

    16 All of them are put to shame and confounded;

        the makers of idols go in confusion together.

    17 But Israel is saved by the Lord

        with everlasting salvation;

    you shall not be put to shame or confounded

        to all eternity.

    18 For thus says the Lord,

    who created the heavens

        (he is God!),

    who formed the earth and made it

        (he established it;

    he did not create it empty,

        he formed it to be inhabited!):

    “I am the Lord, and there is no other.

    19 I did not speak in secret,

        in a land of darkness;

    I did not say to the offspring of Jacob,

        ‘Seek me in vain.’[a]

    I the Lord speak the truth;

        I declare what is right.

    20 “Assemble yourselves and come;

        draw near together,

        you survivors of the nations!

    They have no knowledge

        who carry about their wooden idols,

    and keep on praying to a god

        that cannot save.

    21 Declare and present your case;

        let them take counsel together!

    Who told this long ago?

        Who declared it of old?

    Was it not I, the Lord?

        And there is no other god besides me,

    a righteous God and a Savior;

        there is none besides me.

    22 “Turn to me and be saved,

        all the ends of the earth!

        For I am God, and there is no other.

    23 By myself I have sworn;

        from my mouth has gone out in righteousness

        a word that shall not return:

    ‘To me every knee shall bow,

        every tongue shall swear allegiance.’[b]

    24 “Only in the Lord, it shall be said of me,

        are righteousness and strength;

    to him shall come and be ashamed

        all who were incensed against him.

    25 In the Lord all the offspring of Israel

        shall be justified and shall glory.”

    The Question and Answer for the Meaning of Life

    The Question and Answer for the Meaning of Life

    Ecclesiastes 1:1-11 (ESV)

    All Is Vanity

    1 The words of the Preacher,[a] the son of David, king in Jerusalem.

    2 Vanity[b] of vanities, says the Preacher,

    vanity of vanities! All is vanity.

    3 What does man gain by all the toil

    at which he toils under the sun?

    4 A generation goes, and a generation comes,

    but the earth remains forever.

    5 The sun rises, and the sun goes down,

    and hastens[c] to the place where it rises.

    6 The wind blows to the south

    and goes around to the north;

    around and around goes the wind,

    and on its circuits the wind returns.

    7 All streams run to the sea,

    but the sea is not full;

    to the place where the streams flow,

    there they flow again.

    8 All things are full of weariness;

    a man cannot utter it;

    the eye is not satisfied with seeing,

    nor the ear filled with hearing.

    9 What has been is what will be,

    and what has been done is what will be done,

    and there is nothing new under the sun.

    10 Is there a thing of which it is said,

    “See, this is new”?

    It has been already

    in the ages before us.

    11 There is no remembrance of former things,[d]

    nor will there be any remembrance

    of later things[e] yet to be

    among those who come after.

    Ecclesiastes 12:8-14 (ESV)

    8 Vanity[a] of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity.

    Fear God and Keep His Commandments

    9 Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging many proverbs with great care. 10 The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth.

    11 The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. 12 My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh.

    13 The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.[b] 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, with[c] every secret thing, whether good or evil.

    I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life

    14 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God;[a] believe also in me. 2 In my Father's house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you?[b] 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.”[c] 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

    Receiving the Word of God

    Receiving the Word of God

    1 Thessalonians 2:13-16 (ESV)

    13 And we also thank God constantly[a] for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men[b] but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. 14 For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Christ Jesus that are in Judea. For you suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they did from the Jews,[c] 15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and the prophets, and drove us out, and displease God and oppose all mankind 16 by hindering us from speaking to the Gentiles that they might be saved—so as always to fill up the measure of their sins. But wrath has come upon them at last![d]
