Podcast Description
The seven-year old quartet– vocalist Sally Ellyson, pianist Dan Messé, guitarists Gary Maurer and Steve Curtis – hails from Brooklyn, New York. However, they conjure up such vivid, often pastoral settings and restless, lonesome characters in their songs, you may suspect that they long ago discovered some fantastic, secret portal in an old borough building that instantly transports them from their urban environs to a wide open prairie far, far away. Although Messé, Maurer and Curtis individually and jointly contribute material to Hem’s repertoire, their vision is remarkably unified. As Ellyson, who channels all their imagery, explains, “Each song is its own world. They really show an amazing ability, that I don’t think everyone has, to create a world in song after song that you can become so connected to, that brings you such deep feelings -- pain, joy, sorrow.” Hem has developed a large and loyal international audience, playing shows with artists such as Elvis Costello, Beth Orton and Wilco.

Beautiful Music
I found this band years ago by complete accident while searching aimlessly around the internet for something good because I had lost all my faith in new music. There were only two songs available on whatever site I found them, but I listened over and over again and then went right out and bought Rabbit Songs. The songwriting is eloquent and transcendent and is accompanied by equally skilled and articulate music. To hear the thoughts that go into the songs through this podcast is very exciting. Thanks Hem for making new music and connecting with the people who love your music.
Hem - Intimate & Expansive
Hem is an amazing band with a breathtaking sound that is both intimate and expansive all at once. Their lush orchestrations only add to their ability to transport the listener with each and every song that they produce. I’ve been lucky enough to see them once in person, and their live act is no less stellar than their recorded work. In fact it is even more immediate and vibrant. Their mastery of their instruments and love of their genre is apparent. If only they’d come to my home town!
Funnel Cloud is the best new album I've heard this year.
Funnel Cloud is beautiful. Every song is different, but they contain familiar elements - like something you suddenly remember from childhood. If you want a beautiful (but not sappy) album to listen to over and over - get Funnel Cloud.
