This week I’m celebrating 2 anniversaries: Total Estimated Number of Twitter Users 2009 popularity explosion Celebrating 1 year of @dgold on Twitter, and 9 years hosting Honest Tunes on KXUA. I joined Twitter when it was an offshoot of the podcast site Odeo in April 2008, getting established @dgold before the absolute explosion in popularity of this social network (see Twitter Users chart at left). I joined the KXUA development team, actually, before the station went on the air (circa 1999), and my first episode of Honest Tunes Radio Show was the first Tuesday after the station went live on the air at the beginning of April 2000. Thanks to everyone who has helped, participated, posted requests & listened to the show in this great decade. Here’s an early-early hint, I’m already working on something extra cool for the 10th anniversary of Honest FM , in April 2010. A show. It will be in Fayetteville. I hope you can make it. I hope you can also tune in KXUA next Tuesday April 7th at 8PM for a pre-show Railroad Earth feature show that may include members of the band appearing live on the air to talk and play some Honest Tunes . Members of RRE have appeared twice before on Honest Tunes . I’m in touch with @theRealGrubb bassist Johnny Grubb on Twitter @railroadearth and we’re planning some music and a social media conversation on Honest.FM next week before the Railroad Earth concert at George’s Majestic Lounge. Also follow @RREsetlist for setlist tweets. Here is a recent review of Railroad Earth live from Honest Tune magazine, the music website descended from the original An Honest Tune that I co-founded in 1997 before starting Honest Tunes radio show in 1999. Here’s a new YouTube I just posted in 2009, based on radio audio and video recordings from 4-20-2007 with Blueground Undergrass on Honest Tunes at KXUA with David Blackmon on fiddle, Rev. Jeff Mosier on banjo, El Buho on trumpet, playing an elegant cover of “Black Muddy River” in tribute to Jerry Garcia… Also on Vimeo under Jerry Garcia Black Muddy River banjo cover by Blueground.. If you like the videos, please post a comment or Rating on YouTube, and I’ll be psyched to keep making more music vids. Jerry Joseph and the Jackmormons with special guest Mike Houser Also stay tuned after the Michael Houser hour, for a live in-studio performance from Joey Farr and Fuggins Wheat Band, on Honest FM !! Michael Houser January 6, 1962 – August 10, 2002 Tune in for a birthday celebration of the music of Michael Houser. The show will be both a marathon of music (jam packing as much music into the time slot as possible), and will feature some jams that could be called Marathon Mike because he solos so relentlessly. The broadcast is on Tuesday, January 6, 2009, at 8PM Central Time on KXUA Fayetteville and Honest.FM Mikey's Lightnin' old school drawing by Dgold There will be a mix of pretty instrumental songs (like A of D, Happy Child and West Virginia), and a few classic Widespread Panic live centerpieces (Airplane > Jam, Impossible > Jam, Pigeons). It’s not all jams though, this show is focused on song-writing and the meanings behind Mike’s songs, which are often about his family, or the life of the everyman (Song In My Heart, Postcard, Porch Song). Many of the songs will have Houser singing, some feature vocalists Danny Hutchens (Bloodkin), Vic Chesnutt (Brute), John Bell (Widespread Panic), Jerry Joseph (Jackmormons). Houser plays on the majority of the tracks, but a couple tracks are songs that he cited as his influences (Yes, and Black Sabbath) The highlight of the program is a rare, never-before-heard remix of 2 studio demos: Mike Houser singing “Humpy Galumpy” in the studio matched up with an earlier instrumental version of Humpy Galumpy, that only came to light on January 1st of this year (and I remixed the tracks together for continuity myself last night, for the radio show listeners). CleanPunch Brothers 11-22-2008 Honest FM Podcast Radio | Honest FM 11-22-2008 “Punch Brothers live acoustic 3 songs and interview, Special Saturday Episode of Honest Tunes ” PODCAST CONTENTS: SET ONE: Punch Brothers Introduction*, The Eleventh Reel*, The Blind Leaving The Blind: First Movement*, Interview*, Dead Leaves And The Dirty Ground (cover of the White Stripes)*, Bonus Audio including part of the aftershow Daisy Daisy (instrumental)* and preshow soundcheck Wayside (Back In Time)* and banter THE BANDS : Punch Brothers – Live Acoustic at KXUA Honest FM studios* (that’s what the * means) Punch Brothers record Honest Tunes podcast The Punch Brothers are in town to play a show tonight at The Walton Arts Center on Dickson Street in Fayetteville. They were happy to stop by the studio and play 3 songs for you first, for free. The Punch Brothers Blog posted an announcement about this podcast. “Fayetteville radio session, Tuesday, 25 November 2008. Thanks to the webcast provided by the Honest Tunes program hosted on KXUA – Fayetteville, you can hear Punch Brothers’ interview and on air performances archived here” The Punch Brothers excellent CD is like a classical string quintet times folk They’re like a classical string quintet with bluegrass instrumentation, original songs and varied covers, and they’re very interesting, unique and talented. Chris Thile (prounounced: THEE-LEE rhymes with stealy) originally from Nickel Creek is the band leader and mandolinist. Noam Pikelny plays banjo. Noam has played live on Honest Tunes before with Leftover Salmon. Chris Eldridge from The Infamous Stringdusters, whom we have also played on the radio show, is on acoustic guitar with Punch Brothers. Now, Honest Tunes ‘ good friend Greg Garrison is not out with the band on bass this tour (but he is on their album Punch). Paul Kowert is the bassist for Punch Brothers here. Gabe on violin, you might call it fiddle in the vernacular of our times. They’re a nice bunch of guys, all serious about their study and technique of music. Punch Brothers – The Blind Leaving The Blind video I recorded a video clip of the band playing live on the radio, all around a single mic. Here is the clip on YouTube, On this video Chris Thile (mandolin), Noam Pikelny in the foreground (banjo), Gabe Witcher (violin), Chris Eldridge (guitar), and Paul Kowert (stand up bass) play an acoustic single-mic version of The Blind Leaving The Blind for the Honest Tunes radio audience. It is an excerpt of the radio show podcast. For the complete 12-minutes of The Blind Leaving The Blind Movement One, check for my podcast mp3 audio above (click Play In Pop Up) on Honest.FM or search for Honest Tunes in iTunes, Yahoo podcasts, Odeo, Podcast Alley, Podcast Pickle, and other mp3 blog hosting sites that syndicate this show. Excerpt from the band’s biographies Chris Thile… mandolin… songwriter…. has solo albums and a long career with Nickel Creek, then the How To Grow A Woman From The Ground album, then Punch Brothers emerged Guitarist Chris Eldridge was a founding member of the Infamous Stringdusters and occasionally sits in with his dad Bens band, The Seldom Scene; bassist Paul Kowert, who joined the group this fall (just recently!), is from Madison, Wisconsin and studied at The Curtis Institute of Music with Edgar Meyer; and banjo player Noam Pikelny who has performed and recorded as a solo artist and has collaborated with acoustic music heavyweights John Cowan and Tony Trischka. Violinist Gabe Witcher, a life-long friend of Thiles, is a sought-after session man whose fiddle playing has been featured on the soundtrack of films ranging from Toy Story to Brokeback Mountain. Witcher also has recorded with a range of artists from Willie Nelson to Beck to Randy Newman and played in dobro master Jerry Douglas band for six years. Wow!) Introducing: a new band from Fayetteville called “3 Penny Acre”. The new rootsy string band from fayetteville called 3 Penny Acre is coming to play live on the radio tonite for yall. Members of Three Penny Acre will perform a live acoustic set on-the-air tonight from the studios of KXUA 88.3 FM Fayetteville. If the recording comes out nicely we’ll produce a podcast mp3 episode of 3 Penny Acre! The band features newgrass and folk instrumentation, singer-songwriters, two women in the band, and a barn-full of voices singing songs and pickin’ tunes for y’all. Members of 3Penny are well known players from the Northwest Arkansas acoustic and roots music community. 3 Penny Acre band members are Shannon Wurst-Guitar and Vocals, Cody Russell-Dobro and Banjo, Bayard Blain-Mandolin, and Guitar, Bernice Hembree-Up-right Bass and Vocals, Bryan Hembree- Guitar, Mandolin and Vocals. They have played several shows in the region and around Dickson Street, as 3 Penny Acre. All of the band members are regulars of the stage for the past quite a few years, with outfits like the alt-country powerhouse Charliehorse, the bluegrass of Wildwood, the duo of Bryan and Bernice, and Shannon Wurst’s solo work, full band CD, and collaborations with Sisters In The Round (other female singer-songwriter musicians from the Fayetteville area). On the radio history…. Cody Russell has performed on Honest Tunes episodes in the past with his band Charliehorse, with Shannon Wurst, and with Sarah Hughes. Shannon Wurst has appeared solo and as part of Sisters In the Round on Honest Tunes before. I’m happy to welcome them back on the radio show again and thrilled to present this new Fayetteville string-music combo. This is my first time to visit with 3 Penny Acre as a new band. I’ll ask them some interview questions, warm up the bio and instrumentation, find out about the 3 Penny Acre website Myspace address, and then invite the band to perform some live acoustic songs on the air for you. | 4/8/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Happy Thanksgiving! 2007 Proving Jack Proving 2001 | Happy Thanksgiving! Listen to the musical sandwich of “Proving Ground > Jack > Proving Ground” from Michael Houser’s last Thanksgiving run with Widespread Panic, 11-23-2001 Memphis Tennessee, all on one track (15 minutes). Illustration for Proving Ground into Jack back into Proving from Widespread Panic Memphis 2001 Proving Jack Proving in mp3 format (23MB hi-fi VBR mp3 – right-click to Download or click Play in Pop Up at the top of this post) Proving Jack Proving in FLAC lossless audio format (81MB – right click, Save As flac) JB goes into a brief rap on The Guess Who song “Do You Miss Me Darlin’?” during Jack when he quotes from the lines, “What good is it if I can’t even sing it to you? What good is it if I can’t even come out and sing it to you right now? ‘Cause talkin’ won’t do it and walkin’ won’t rush it along” The 6-year anniversary of this show is coming up on Friday this week. This is from the “Tubes” source on Grandpuba, the fan-favorite Widespread Panic live archive. I stitched the 3 tracks together to make 1 seamless track, as requested by Panic freak friend CaPino. | 11/22/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

I been up all night with Widespread panic | Widespread Panic Up All Night cover art for the single free mp3 download On 10-13 click Play In Pop-Up or Download to hear Panic’s new song “Up All Night” here from Honest Tunes or on the band’s homepage audio player. The high-res mp3 was released for free download from livewidespreadpanic on Oct. 15 and is shared here by permission. The single is a preview of WSP’s upcoming new album. Jojo originated the songwriting of “Up All Night” but JB sings it. There are horns and back-up singers, kind of a Muscle Shoals sound. WSP recorded it in the Bahamas with producer Terry Manning (who has also produced for Al Green – and it shows on this track). This is basically Panic’s first new original song released with Jimmy Herring on lead guitar. It sounds promising for the next album. They decided to release the mp3 for free on any/all websites by permission of the band – that’s pretty cool, and it allows me to include the mp3 with this week’s Honest Tunes Radio Podcast. According to the press release, “The bands intention is to offer the track free for download on all music sites permitting, with no strings attached.” Panic satisfied their recording contract with Sanctuary Records & now they are an independent band again, with their own Widespread Records. Widespread Panic back-cover art shows the best thing about New Years is the Christmas lights There’s not a lot of guitar solo here, but you can bet they’ll add that part in concert. Jimmy’s all over the articulation of the melody, with some pretty catchy and comfortable licks, to my ear; I guess he’ll be called on to cover the horn parts later live. There’s some chunky/clunky rhythm guitar from JB that underpins and synchs-up with the horns, keys, and Jimmy’s parts — I like the sound of 2 guitars. I like to hear Jimmy playing like this, more of a Little Feat kind of style instead of a fusion shredder or psychedlic drip. It’s good for the Gulf Coast swagger of this tune. Confidence in laziness, making an art of laid-back assertion. Another reviewer thought it called Van Morrison to mind. -DG | 10/13/07 | Free | View In iTunes |

LEAFERS: If you have a question for the band (or a response to the radio show) you can Post a Comment here… looking for interesting fan-questions, anything you want to know about the music. (We ended up asking 2 of the fan-questions: about Can You Guess It?, The Garden sequence, and the “last chance gas station” lyric that appears in Forgiven, Incandescent Devil, and is related to Gasaholic by Trevor and Tea Leaf Green.) Trevor Garrod from Tea Leaf Green plays acoustic guitar and sings You’ll hear the exact configuration of musicians on the broadcast. This could be one of the most unique acoustic appearances we’ve had on Honest Tunes . I’ll try to record it but it would be great if a Listener could try to capture the webcast as well (Thanks crazyed). After the radio show, on Tuesday June 12, 2007, Railroad Earth headlines with very special guests Tea Leaf Green returning to George’s Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street in Fayetteville, Arkansas, for what promises to be an amazing long night of music. The 2 bands collaborated recently on JamCruise, and at Wakarusa this past weekend (Andy and Tim both jammed with TLG). They are good friends and admirers of one another’s music, despite drawing on different aspects of live rock and roots to craft their unique sounds. RRE is a more acoustic and bluegrass oriented band, while Tea Leaf Green is a louder electric rock band with folk underpinnings. The mixture of the 2 is something to behold, something new and breakthrough. By the way, Railroad Earth has joined us for an interview on KXUA a couple years ago (watch the Slideshow in the sidebar for pictures of that!). TLG hasn’t been up there yet before 6-12-07, although we spin their CD’s all the time on the radio show and they’ve played at the legendary Chester’s Place and at George’s before. From crazyed, who recorded the webcast remotely and did a great favor circulating this while I was at Bonnaroo: “Same show just 2 different links if one gives you problems.” (The links are probably cashed out by now, and the same show is available on dgold.info/radio as a podcast mp3, and coming soon to Archive.org in FLAC hopefully -DG) http://www.sendspace.com/file/uhd16n http://www.sendspace.com/file/95fz9o Tea Leaf Green KXUA 88.3 – University of Arkansas College Radio – Fayetteville, AR Honest Tunes Radio Show June 12, 2007 Webcast > Streamripper > mp3 01.
