Episode 317: James Mooney from the Native American Church | James "Flaming Eagle" Mooney from the Native American Church; Ian Freeman's incarceration for civil disobedience; Ron Paul nearly places first in Iowa Straw Poll. -- James "Flaming Eagle" Mooney from the Oklevueha Native American Church talks about Indigenous American religious practices using peyote and how he and his wife were prosecuted by the State of Utah for practicing their religion. In 2004 the Utah Supreme Court dismissed their case by unanimous decision. This has paved the way for anyone to become a member of the Native American Church and have the absolute right to consume, transport, grow church Sacrament (According to the First Amendment and Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act of 2000 Section 3. (b) (2) the substantial burden affects, or removal of that substantial burden would affect, commerce with foreign nations, among the several States, or with Indian tribes) In 1918 the Native American Church was incorporated as a federally recognized church, the by-laws of this church was written by James Warren ‘Flaming Eagle’ Mooney’s famed Great Grand Father, James Mooney Smithsonian Institute Ethnologist. In 1999 the State of Utah raided the Church and arrested James and Linda Mooney in the most recent attempt to outlaw the Native American Church. The case was appealed to the Utah Supreme court saying in unanimous decision that a church may not be limited by race. This opened the door for all people to participate in the peyote ceremony. Peyote is grown in parts of Texas and Mexico. In Mexico the peyote is taken care of by the Huichol people. Peyote is a healing herb, it is non-neither addictive nor can one over dose with it. Harvard did a study and said that people "who use the hallucinogen peyote regularly in connection with religious ceremonies show no evidence of brain damage or psychological problems" http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2005/11/study-no-psychological-or-cognitive-deficits-from-peyote/ The study also found "the peyote users scored better on several measures of the Rand Mental Health Inventory (RMHI)" The major motivating person to advance the use of Peyote in the United States Quanah Parker is often quoted to saying, "The White man goes into their church to talk about God; we go into our tepee to talk to God!" Oklevueha Native American Church is presently the only Native American Church that State and Federal Courts recognize as having reached the sincerity level standing, worshiping off Federally Recognized Indian Reservations. The Native American Church is the only federally recognized earth-based healing religion and as such ALL plants are considered sacred and are to be honored. | 8/14/11 | Free | View In iTunes |
