CleanLDP Episode #54: Striking a Balance | The latest and greatest episode of the LDP Podcast is now live and available for download! This week not one but two guests…special guest Jason Cate from the listening audience, and an established photographer in his own right, and Nicole Young returns to the show. Here’s the show notes (and show for download)! Enjoy the show, and thanks to everyone for their continued support and interest: 1. Personal Work versus Client Work – What brings clients in is your own creative vision yet at the same time you also have to be able to recognize the client vision too…striking a balance there can be demanding and challenging. There are several strategies to cope: 2. Shooting versus Promotion/Marketing – We have to produce work to survive, but by the same token if we don’t tell others about the work we are producing, how can one even begin to survive without some measure of success. Balancing the creative and business ends of photography is equally demanding and can take a pretty heavy toll if you’re not careful. There are several approaches to take here as well: 3. Capturing and creating photos and projects versus down time – With the internet, Twitter, Facebook cell phones, email, and everything assaulting us literally 24/7 – there has to be a way to balance personal time with work time. In this case personal time means actually putting the camera down and spending time with family, friends, colleagues, and otherwise “unplugging” from the digital photography world. Can we even afford to take these periods of downtime anymore? Is it worth the risk of fading? Things to consider when balancing personal and professional growth and development, and strategies to cope: 4. Listener Q&AWhat’s the best way to deal with noise in photos? I’ve heard several options out there ranging from using plugins in Lightroom, to layer masks in photoshop, while others just avoid high ISO at all costs. – Karen in New York Just getting started in photography and wondering if I can build a business in this market. What are the pitfalls I should be wary of? On that same note, would it be better to begin solo and keep things small to avoid getting in over my head or should I work with other photogs to defray costs while making larger projects available to the business? – Phil in Las VegasFast Track Photographer by Dane SandersEveryone always talks a good game about lenses, but it’s tough to be taken seriously when people have better camera bodies than I do that have 1/10th the experience or knowledge. How do you deal with clients who have better gear than you? – Katherine in MilwaukeeCo-Hosts:Nicole Young,WebsiteJason Cate,WebsiteAnd, for those of you that listened, and are paying attention, you’ll know that Nicole has generously donated a copy of one of her latest books “Snapshots to Great Shots” for some lucky commenter. So, leave your comments, thoughts, and/or feedback on the show here, and you’ll be automatically entered to win either her 60D or 7D book! CleanThe Passion Principle: LDP Episode #53 | Editor Note: Episode #53 of the podcast is ready for your holiday listening enjoyment! This should have gone out last week, so my apologies. System problems with the post production delayed the publication, but better late than never is my motto! Anyway, enjoy! Many notable photographers have spoken and alluded to this idea of shooting photography with passion. The idea is to approach photography with your creative voice, and a vision of what it is you want to accomplish. So, what do you do when the voice is silent, or the vision is blinded? Re-igniting the passion for photography is something we all face, and while we can all agree that shooting with passion is always a good thing, the question really is how to achieve that intangible in your work. Tune in to the latest podcast here with Andie Smith as we broach the subject head on. We also tackle some really engaging listener questions, so be sure to listen in – yours may be answered! | 12/13/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

CleanPutting it all together…:LDP Episode #51 | A number of things have been in the hopper for a while now, and yesterday it all came to a boil with:Attending a Captured By The Light Seminar with David Ziser Launching a Drobo Giveaway Sweepstakes with Data Robotics Publishing the Photokina PodcastFirst up, the podcast… I had another great chat with Kerry Garrison about a week ago about when and why to upgrade your camera body. With the 60D now in the market, and Photokina just starting yesterday, there’s going to be lots of opportunities to buy. When looking at all the options of whether new features are worth the upgrade. Check it out! The show notes are more detailed, so will likely go out tomorrow separately, but wanted to let people catch it today because of a special sponsor… Drobo 3-Day Sweepstakes Giveaway For some time now I have been working on getting some preferred vendors in line for the monthly podcast series and the regular contest over on Flickr. One of those sponsors I have been working with is Data Robotics. I received word yesterday that some advertising dollars were still available for 3rd quarter, and if I could act fast, we could run a giveaway for Canon Blogger readers and podcast listeners. So, the blog post for the podcast got bumped so I could add an intro there about the giveaway, (you can get all the details about the 3-Day Giveaway here. David Ziser Denver Seminar The other news item of note was the David Ziser seminar I attended on Monday. This is his 2010 tour, titled Captured By The Light, and I had an opportunity to assist as a volunteer for the show…taking registrations, assisting with product sales, and setup/breakdown. The seminar was probably one of the best I have attended (and I’ve taken in a few…). The sheer quantity of material was amazing…and with the added door prizes, I can totally see the value behind this event. He had over $6000 in door prizes! In addition to the swag that was given to every attendee, including free months of memberships for things like Kelby Training, a free 1 year membership to WPPI, 20% off discounts for things like the Spyder3Pro, Animoto discounts, 4-month subscription to Professional Photographer. It was just a great time. It was an honor to participate, and I would like to take a moment here on the blog to thank David and his staff for their down-to-earth and welcoming approach. For more information on the Captured By The Light Tour and to see if he’s coming to a city near you, check out the details here: www.capturedbythelight2010.com And if you’re not a reader of his blog, make sure you check that out too – probably one of the best resources I have in my daily feeds…you can pick that up here: Digital Pro Talk That’s it for the double-post Tuesday – not the norm, but definitely timely enough and worthy of the additional nugget. My apologies to Andie Smith as she was the guest for the show (I’m sure she has been wondering what the heck happened!). CleanKeep on Shootin’! | It’s been a while since an episode of LDP ran, but as we keep on shootin’ our way through life, so to does LDP continue on albeit not as frequently as any of us would like! Nevertheless, I get caught up somewhat on the photo news beat with some of the top stories over the past three weeks, have a great conversation with Tyler Stableford, a recent addition to the distinguished annals of the Canon Explorers of Light group. He’s been featured in photo magazines including Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, and many more. A recent series on the Colorado F-16 fighter pilots is what caught my eye about him and we recently had a chance to chew the fat…on this show! It was a great conversation, and I’d like to thank Tyler for taking the time to sit down and chat with me – here’s the show notes for everything that was covered on the latest episode: News:Eye-Fi expanding coverage Polaroid 300 bringing back instant film World’s Largest PhotoConversation With Tyler Stableford:Website: www.tylerstableford.comVideo:5 Point Film Festival Colorado F-16 FightersNews: www.tylerstableford.com/news Social Media: Twitter – www.twitter.com/tylerstableford Facebook – www.facebook.com/tylerstablefordListener QuestionsDigital Frame Resolution Problem Older Cameras and Newer Batteries Joint CopyrightThat’s it for the show – lots to listen to, and Tyler was super cool to chat with. CleanEpisode #36 – The End is Near! | Okay, the end isn’t near, but the end of the year is near, and it’s time to start doing wrap-ups all over the internet and other publications. Heck, even Time Magazine has a photos of the year, as did Rangefinder, and many blog authors are doing the same. So, in the interests of always “doing something different”, I am inviting everyone that listens to the podcast and reads the blog to share your own thoughts of 2009 in the comments. Here’s the questions that I always think about at the end of the year:What was my best photo? What was my biggest accomplishment? What software/hardware really stood out above the rest for me? What was my favorite book of the year that I read? What new blog became a staple in my reading? So, rather than me telling you, this year you have an opportunity to tell me what your favorites are! Feel free to sound off in the comments or via email…the address as always is jasoncanonbloggercom In the blog notes for the week – the latest podcast is up, and lots of blog/podcast news to share. I also took a more detailed look at photography and the law, and some of the resources I rely on. Lastly, as always were the listener questions and answers. CleanCreating Compelling Captures – the Podcast! | Last week we looked at 5 different ways to create compelling captures here on the blog. Well, today the latest podcast is available where we go into a little more granularity on the subject. A little dash of some photo news and tidbits are thrown in too, but more importantly, the previously hyped and promoted conversation with David DuChemin is now live and ready for your listening enjoyment. We look not only at how to create compelling captures, but also at how the idea of controversy fits into the picture. Can controversial pictures make for more compelling images? What defines controversy? Is it the photographer, the conditions, the viewer, or something else altogether? David and I also talk about his travels, share a few anecdotes, and look at the world of photography in new and exciting ways – coming at things creatively rather than technically. Lots of great stuff for your listening enjoyment. What are the benefits? Pros? Cons? There’s thoughts both ways and I’ll look into each and give a few answers on this weeks show. Also on this weeks show, I had the opportunity to talk with Matthew Bamberg, a well-known and respected photographer and author of digital photography books. CleanPhoto Framing Follow-up | After the blog post on Wednesday, and the number of comments received, I thought that the next podcast would be well served to discuss the idea behind matting and framing in more detail. As luck would have it, that podcast just went live earlier this afternoon! You can catch the podcast over at the Personal Life Media site here: Learning Digital Photography Here’s the Show Notes: In this latest episode of Learning Digital Photography, the Grand Prize winner from the September $500 giveaway is announced, and the October contest opens up – ready for your entries. The theme this time is Fall (open to interpretation). Specs, guidelines, and such are discussed including dimensions, dates for submission and more. Also in this episode, a primer on framing your photos: things to look for and avoid when matting and framing work. Fun and informative
It's fun learning Photoshop from Jason - as he gets better, so do his tutorials and he's easy to understand because he speaks in plain English.
T-t-t-today, Jr.
OK, he's done his homework, and it is informative. But here's my 2-cents:
I just listened to 20-minutes on framing pictures. Seriously, I could summarize that into about 3-minutes (with no loss of content). Make it more concise. Plan it out, don't just talk for 20 minutes.
Oh... Here's a good drinking game. Every time he says "and things of that nature", take a drink. You'll be drunk by the first 5 minutes.
I don't want to seem like I'm bashing this podcast. I want it to do well. But it won't do well unless you make it concise (stop wasting time) and things of that nature.
Pimp
This guy is a mac daddy. I've listen to two podcast and he only has women photographers and he flirts so much with these girls it's annoying and lame. He has some great info but his flirting makes the guests very uneasy.
