One of Swords Podcast 122: Dead End Central | This week, I was able to pull Infinity Ward's Mark Rubin away from the noise and fun of the Modern Warfare 3 Grudge Match so I could grill him about Collection 2's new Face Off mode, why those maps are the way they are, and what to do about boosters. Kat and Hugh join in for the rest of the show to discuss Moonraker, NASCAR, passing gas, Activision's new UK studio, Yellow Submarine, Hugh's bad back, Tony Hawk soundtracks, Men in Black, Silver Surfer on NES, failed napping, and, perhaps inevitably, vasectomies. One of Swords Podcast 120: Draw Some Charts | Now that the big reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops II is complete, I got a chance to talk with Treyarch studio head Mark Lamia about horses, failing missions, branching storylines, and Vahn's secret past. We even tackled that fan-favorite "what engine is this game using" question. We talk for a good 40 minutes, so it's worth hearing. And it's a thrill to be able to post this show due to the nasty tech problems we endured, but Kat and Hugh do appear as well, to discuss MW3 PC DLC, Bond villains, MW3 PS3 DLC, Jack Black, MW3 360 DLC, The Avengers, Prototype 2 DLC, Skylanders updates, Family Guy, and a Spidey preorder perk that Hugh actually likes. Plus, a monster truck rally breaks out at a dance concert. One of Swords Podcast 118: Venereal Cocktail | So whatever happened to that lady who won the MW3 Jeep at Call of Duty XP? I caught up with her in person for a six-month tuneup, and we talked about life with the new car, what it was like to be a contestant on Friday Night Fights, and of course, the ugly side of Call of Duty fandom. The rest of the time is wasted with Kat and Hugh as we discuss Prototype 2's big launch, Call of Duty's big secret (which is NOT "Space Jam"), teenage parties, the free MW3 PC weekend, Warren Zevon, a Reddit threat, cheap iOS games, the green flu, and -- most importantly -- Hugh's werewolf origin story. One of Swords Podcast 117: Very Few Tankadins | Skylanders: Cloud Patrol is officially a hit on iOS -- and Ben Throop from developer Vicarious Visions tells me how the team put it together and -- most importantly -- how to rock the score leaderboards. Hugh and Kat and I then chat about the new James Bond game, Hugh's new movie, celebrity WoW groups, MW3 DLC on PS3, Dan's signature song, V, arcade machines, Marvel movies, light-up keyboards that will not work with your console regardless of what was said on the show (see links below), and, uh, stiffness. One of Swords Podcast 116: A Smidge Alive | Pete Angstadt won $175,000 in the Activision Independent Game Competition last year...so now what? I catch up with Pete to find out what he's used the money for and when we can expect to play his winning game for ourselves. Might want to make sure your anti-virus software is up to date, though -- I've got PAX pox for this show. Hugh returns as well, just in time to discuss new Elite MW3 DLC, sweaty hands, slightly-used Skylanders, Mass Effect 3 multiplayer, the awkwardness of self-promotion, Elite's 100K Day, why Dan wants to play NFS: The Run, furry beasts, Kickstarter, the best show on television, and who Hugh feels is the Simon Cowell of videogames. One of Swords Podcast 115: Mr. Overdrive | Canada's second greatest drummer Dave Fracchia -- who moonlights as the studio VP for Prototype 2 developers Radical Entertainment -- joins me this week to discuss the last days of P2, what the studio plans to do if the game is a hit, and even what they plan to do if it isn't. Then we talk about music for, like, half an hour. Also, Hollywood called for Hugh again this week, and while we miss him, hey, that's awesome for his career! While he's taking care of business, Kat and I bring clanmate and comedian WillyFresh992 into the fray to discuss the impending PAX East convention, the new Skylanders iOS game, the paranoia and hatred of April Fool's Day, what you might find in your next bag of Fritos, internal strife on Clan [1oS], cheap copies of Blur, Activision's founding fathers, and how Toys For Bob has your back on your Skylanders' secret codes. One of Swords Podcast 114: More Estrogen | While Hugh is off doing important Hollywood stuff, Kat and I draft Blythe Renay of the world-famous Damsels of Dorkington to sit in this week, tilting the scales in the gender balance on the show. We riff on your letters, Robert Bowling's departure, expired milk, the Skylanders conspiracy theory, the lowest form of nerdity, Elite PS3 content, wireless headsets, the decline of GAME in the UK, Clan Operations, old DLC, Dan's detective skills, how Blythe survived being in the Xbox Gamer Spotlight, and the one short film Kat wishes she could unsee. One of Swords Podcast 113: Weresomething | World-famous Xbox Live superstar Major Nelson -- the Larry Hryb! -- joins me this week to talk about MW3's new DLC, what's next for the Blur developers, and how to survive Iraq. That's nicer to hear than the shouty ME3 argument Kat, Hugh, and I get into, but we also cover fun stuff like the new iPad, Prototype 2's merch store, geek souvenirs, Black Ops Zombies, the voice of dissent, bad drawings, old Sega games, a new Transformers game, and characters made of felt. One of Swords Podcast 112: Naked Catastrophe | With Prototype 2 just weeks away from release, developer Radical Entertainment has added a community manager to their ranks -- and I'm happy to have that person, Adam Badke, on the show this week to talk about life in Canada. Hugh is back on the show as well, this time in person -- he records the show from my office here at Activision for the first time ever. By the time we add Kat to the mix, we're off to the races about upcoming MW3 DLC, hibernating bears, Tony Hawk's DLC tease, Clash of the Titans, the ME3 controversy, Spider-Man's swinging, the new iPad (and how Hugh says it should be used), Battleship: The Game Based on the Movie Based on the Game, Latin, leashes, and love. And while Hollywood Hugh had to pass this week due to an important meeting, we get to meet two people whose names sound fairly familiar -- 1oS clanmates Rare Bishop and Pantless Steve help Kat and I fill the empty space with MW3 advice for newbies, the new iPad vs PS Vita, Alex Mercer's surprise appearance in Prototype 2, how to win a snowmobile, a Blur playdate, bad microphones, one of the weirdest 2600 games in existence, new Skylanders, Call of Duty trivia, and the color blue. Otherwise, your letters are the star of this show, but they get mixed in with a lot of other topics. For instance, we tackle the upcoming 360 MW3 content, southern accents, FPS gaming on iPads, Activision's plans for the PS Vita, Ghostbusters references, bad news at Blizzard, how to autograph a digital book, unused codes inside used games, and Hugh's relationship with the blind. Kat and Hugh are also on hand to discuss the arrival of clan operations, the books of Skylanders, the extra prestige of MW3, the murky history of Activision's licensed non-gaming PC titles, the proto-culture of Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and yes, the critical path of Dan Amrich. One of Swords Podcast 108: Rock Fight | The Prototype 2 digital comic series, The Anchor, debuts today -- and last week I got to meet the writer Dan Jolley and the editor Dave Marshall. We talk a bit about bridging the narrative gap between the two games, but we don't talk long because there's so much news! Eric Hirshberg's comments about creativity and CEOs, the free MW3 weekend, the next WoW expansion, the return of Legendary Skylanders, Fall of Cybertron's Bruticus, True Crime Hong Kong's new name...it's huge. And that's to say nothing about the random chatter about the Angry Birds board game, Smashing Pumpkins, why different is wrong, Hugh's old WoW gear, being presumptuous when releasing a game, Kevin vs. Devon, and Tattooine Idol. One of Swords Podcast 107: Hugging Paper | So much news, so many listener letters, so many distractions -- how we got this week's show done in an hour, I'll never know. But we packed that hour full to bursting with talk of the new Skylanders game, naive morons, the next MW3 Elite content drop, sword fighters, pwning n00bs, the disappearance of Drop Zone, time management, Dan's first girlfriend, extra Transformers, earnings calls, double XP in Black Ops, and something called the "Qii." One of Swords Podcast 106: Lick Your Face | "Here's something I probably shouldn't say" is becoming a Hugh trademark phrase -- and he says it again as we tackle listener letters and the week's news. Among the topics this time: The RADNET edition of Prototype 2, the PS Vita, the ubiquity of Watchmen, surviving NYC on NYE, Spyro history, used games and digital distribution (but not too much, don't worry), a PC delay, Skylanders merchandise, large women in comic books, and our most anticipated games of 2012. One of Swords Podcast 105: Bizarre Effervescence | Time to catch up with our old pal Bernard Abellada -- @ATVIBernard to his Twitter fans -- to talk about 2011's best games and what's going on at Activision Customer Support. Aside from that, Kat and Hugh kick around costume dramas, MW3 DLC, bad habits, Ferris Bueller, dogs with Alzheimer's, the Fastball Special, a Mactastrophe, the creation of the word "fontastic," and one of the most unintentionally difficult Stick It to the Dan questions we've ever fielded. Also, it should be noted that Hugh chooses the ultimate incarnation of mankind in this show, but One of Swords does not condone smoking dope or playing bongos. Then Hugh has a big reveal to cap off a conversation that includes Prototype 2 comics, a lost score, MW3's NPD dominance, schoolyard rules, Deadpool, Conker's Bad Fur Day, the Black Eyed Peas, and how to pronounce "lycanthropy." One of Swords Podcast 103: Bedward and Lacob | MW3 DLC is coming soon, and both Infinity Ward's Robert Bowling and Raven Software's Eric Biessman are on the show this week to talk about what you can expect. What you probably didn't expect was chatter from Hugh and Kat about man dolls, Disneyland, the Elite iOS app, double strollers, the biggest Xbox Live games for 2011, the history of Jim Levy, Skyrim, a really good charity, a guy who can talk to plants, and finding a Dremel in the strangest places. This show is a mix of post-holiday wrap-up and reader questions, featuring Justin Bieber, where Hugh likes to buy toys, how publishers make money with online games, Skylanders shortages, Hugh's MMO addiction, digital comics, the future of James Bond, day-of-release digital downloads, PC car combat games that aren't Interstate 76, phat beatz, and you know, dragons. ExplicitOne of Swords Podcast 101: Outtakes of 2011 | We made it through another year, and I cannot thank you enough for all the support you've shown One of Swords. Our podcast audience tripled in 2011, and that's all from you telling your friends that what we're saying is worth hearing! As a reward for your loyalty, here is a collection of our failures, ramblings, and anecdotes with no point from the last year -- and some of them are explicit, so be warned. Adult language and adult situations lurk within the discussions of prunes, the alleged existence of Santa Claus, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, the worst games we've ever played, ChatRoulette, Aaron Sorkin, keyboards, Joey Fatone, robotic voices, NASCAR hate mail, someone named "Donkey Lips," hiding porn on your iPad, bad British accents, a formal apology for one of Activision's games, family photos, a Google adventure, people Kat does not want to be friends with, the lost discussion about the death of Osama bin Laden, Darren Gladstone on PC mods, and a lengthy chat with Hugh's wife, Lisa, about how and why to raise a family. Plus, Dan says "no" a lot and basically loses it on an ex-listener. Enjoy this full-length clip show while we enjoy our vacation! ExplicitOne of Swords Podcast 100: Oh, Hi There | A major milestone calls for a major celebrity guest -- and Tony Hawk was nice enough to call in on his day off to talk about what you can expect from Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD this summer. We talk about choosing pros, choosing music, and most importantly, he runs the Gauntlet of Swords! Hugh and Kat and I then convene for the usual stuff -- you know, the first news on MW3 DLC, Skyrim addiction, baby vomit, Spyro's Universe, Headshotmas, Mazes and Monsters, sneaking into Star Trek, and Hugh openly attacks a holiday. Plus, we get Kat to run her own trivia gauntlet, thanks to you listeners. And really...100 shows? That's thanks to you listeners, too. UPDATE 12/21: I'd like to apologize to anyone who is offended by Hugh's remarks in this episode. I thought it was clear that we are all independent voices on the show expressing independent opinions, and I will always let someone speak even if I disagree with their position (which is exactly what happened on this show). However, some people didn't find Hugh's jokes funny and didn't feel they should have been included in the show, and I respect that outlook too. There's no way to make everybody happy, but I did not realize anyone would be deeply offended by his statements. I am sorry for including Hugh's comments. UPDATE FROM HUGH 12/22: "My comments on the commercialization of Hanukkah were misinterpreted as an attack on Hanukkah itself -- and that's not the case. As I said on the show, I am Jewish myself; Hanukkah is special to me and my family, and I respect everyone’s right to religious freedom. Regular listeners of the show know I'm given to comic exaggeration, especially when I'm ranting about personal pet peeves, and this was one of those times. I did not mean to offend anyone with my views on the commercialization of Hanukkah, and I apologize to anyone who thought I was talking about Hanukkah itself." One of Swords Podcast 099: Be the Beaver | The announcement of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD was a nice surprise this weekend -- and Robomodo lead designer Patrick Dwyer is on hand to talk a little bit about it, as well as Big League Sports for Kinect and the fan-funded Bodoink. Apart from that, we chat about the VGAs, monkeys, MW3's latest monetary milestone, Hugh's life as an AOL troll, the Fall of Cybertron trailer, Diablo III, pinball, C-sections, card games online, bullrings, Seth Green in Paris, and an epic Spider-Man rant. One of Swords Podcast 098: Something About Cherries | This time around, Ken Rosman from the Prototype 2 team up at Radical Entertainment (now on Twitter!) runs the infamous Gauntlet of Swords, but also reveals his military service record and listens to my apology. Will he also make Gauntlet of Swords history? Since the rest of this podcast (with Kat and Hugh) was recorded late at night, things get kinda strange as we cover Black Ops Zombies for iOS, the really-last-chance for Founder's status, Ben Stiller, MW3 Avatars helping the Call of Duty Endowment, the VGAs, John Carter from Mars, another bad analogy, MW3 patch notes, the "official" Amazing Spider-Man, Infinity Blade II, where to buy holiday gifts, Umloud, Beenox history, Hugh's unusual advice for 17-year-olds, and of course, Headshotmas. One of Swords Podcast 096: Hello, Rational People | What are you thankful for? I'm thankful that I finally landed an inteview with Alex Ness, Chief of Staff for Toys For Bob, to talk about the successful launch of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure. We talk about how the studio pitched Activision on its original IP, lava burps, Japanese 3DO games, plastic versus chocolate, and the characters with the best voices in the game. When Kat and Hugh jump in, we're off on new tangents, including MW3's sales milestone, Hugh's secret project, Skylanders Black Friday deals, in-laws, Magic: the Gathering (of course), the Elite groups for OneOfSwords, killing whales, blood types, those stupid clan-tag controller symbols in MW3, The Muppets, microtransactions, Hugh's prom, 41% of something, Call of Duty's inevitable peak, and gewgaws. One of Swords Podcast 095: Pornographic Vegetables | What's an Australian doing in Vancouver? That's just one of many questions I ask Chris Ansell, Radical Entertainment's director of marketing, as he tells us about his involvement in Prototype 2 and then runs the infamous Gauntlet of Swords. The rest is the usual nonsense with Kat and Hugh, where we tackle new Skylanders, missing Transformers, Elite's current status, Spidey freebies, appeasing the queen, crazy day-one sales data for MW3, fishing with your hands, Latin, British theater, and Hugh's twin disappointments of not winning Kill Confirmed games and his lack of moneymaking aptitude. One of Swords Podcast 094: Randolph Metaphors | I know why you're interested in this week's show. Has the pressure of the twin launches of MW3 and Call of Duty Elite finally turned Dan's brain to Marmite? You be the judge, because in addition to talking about both those very important things, this week's conversation with Kat and Hugh includes heartfelt thanks, ProtoSlice, toy dogs, a disturbing scene from Psycho, self-indulgence, Saving Private Ryan, a 2600 game Hugh's never heard of, Army vs. Navy, Skylanders figures, females in military shooters, gaming IP ownership, China, Mark Turmell, Hugh's book, a risky 12-hour idea, "Rage Quitter," and 13,000 stores nationwide. ExplicitOne of Swords Podcast 093: Cheesesteak Hat | Wanna hear a Canadian swear -- a lot? It's my pleasure to welcome Radical Entertainment studio VP David Fracchia to the show, as he talks about Prototype 2 and runs the full Gauntlet of Swords -- including the Atari 2600 Skiing challenge! But be warned: There is strong adult language in this episode, as I did not bleep Dave's comments. Plus, Kat and Hugh and I discuss the crazy amount of games coming out this week (including the ones you had no idea existed), goofy shoes, NBA Jam, Robot Chicken, more PC chatter that will probably infuriate people, Dora the Explorer, and of course, Dan's adventures in jury duty...as a Ghostbuster. An ambitious idea from Activision
Dan Amrich has been involved in the game industry for a over a decade, reviewing video games as a journalist before they were anywhere near as popular as they are now. Now he has a PR role with Activision, building up attention to the many projects that the giant publisher has in the works. OneOfSwords podcast is in its early stages right now, but so far it seems promising. Dan Amrich remains professional and states that he considers himself a gamer first, and will remain objective on all matters that may come out of Activision. With his experience as a journalist he is able to present his show effectively, and I am looking forward to his upcoming podcasts.
