One Two, One Two, One One | What is it like to drive 1400 MPH? I used an HD Flip Video Camera and recorded a video of a full length drive from Chesapeake to Hampton Virginia, including a traffic jam, going through the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel, stopping for an iced tea at Sonic drive thru – and getting lost in residential Hampton. Originally I included the audio from the sped up driving clip – but after my first upload I discovered YouTube processing did not pick it up so the whole clip was mostly silent. I decided to use an edited version of a song I did around the 2011 Christmas Holidays. Being short on creativity the day I did the master edit I called the song “One Two, One Two, One One”. You may have already guessed that the original recording was made on December 12, 2011. Hopefully you will enjoy the track despite the silly title. The driving video is available on YouTube. Amy’s Song | My Daughter is away on a mission trip in Canada and I have been missing her a lot. Usually I include the individual mix tracks on the Open Source Music Project – but this time the mixdown is pretty much exactly the content of the individual tracks – I’s a slow soulful song I hope you enjoy. Music Studio App | I have been on an extended visit to my Brother Steve’s place near Atlanta as he recuperates from some surgery. He is getting along fine, and I am heading back to Virginia in a couple of days. Meanwhile I just had to do some kind of music while I was here. I mean two weeks away from my studio is a long, long time! Music Studio app for iPad I decided to see if I could do something nifty on my new iPad and sure enough two programs really jump out at me… Music Studio by xewton.com which I will give a mini review of next… and AmpliTube by IK Multimedia which I will review next time. Music Studio pretty much blows me away. I am not one to do a lot of sequencing – mainly I just play my music and record it – then do additional tracks and mix it. (See http://music.tomanthony.com/about/what-i-use/) And while I have messed around with cakewalk in the past, I have not even had the program I own installed for some time. That being the case I would still say that if you are familiar at all with midi sequencing you should be comfortable in Music Studio. Spending just a few minutes at a time I put together a surprisingly high quality music bed and several loops. Because this is also a pod cast I will only post one example of the music I created on my iPad as an MP3 file – see the link below. In case you also have the Music Studio app I have zipped and posted the native XMS files. You may import these into the app and mess around with the stuff I did… it’s not much but you are welcome to check it out. I have also included a zip file of the midi files from the loops and song… if you do use cakewalk or any kind of midi editor you may do the same. Music Studio Instrument and Effects tabs The Music Studio app starts with a keyboard screen that you can adjust for width of the keys and position of the keyboard – you can also make it a dual keyboard and assign two different voices. The instrument tab features 40 voice settings and of those three are drums and one is reserved for various sound effects. The voices sound surprisingly good – especially the synth leads and guitar power chords. The tracks tab features a 128 track sequencer – but it might get a little clumsy managing more than a dozen tracks owing to the size of the iPad screen. There are decent effects, and it is easy to export the files. All in all I am glad I installed it. MIDI files Music Studio XMS files Share | 2/24/11 | Free | View In iTunes |

Steve’s Buddy | I believe the Holidays are about faith and family and not necessarily about the dollar value of the gift. So I wanted to give some very personalized gifts for the holidays this year for many reasons – mostly because I did not want to fall into the trap of buying some generic piece of crap at Wal*Mart and calling it a Christmas present. I decided to give My brother Steve a song. In the many years I have been recording I had never done that before, and it seemed like a cool thing to do. So here is a tune I call Steve’s Buddy. I especially like the big bass line. This is one I turn the volume up on. The Long Walkabout | According to Wikipedia, Walkabout refers to a rite of passage during which male Australian Aborigines would undergo a journey during adolescence and live in the wilderness for a period as long as six months. In this practice they would trace the paths, or “songlines”, that their people’s ceremonials ancestors took, and imitate, in a fashion, their heroic deeds. I love that concept – but I really named this song The Long Walkabout becuase the Sax voice in the begining and to some lesser extent the breathy flute sound just reminded me of the Austrailian didjeridu. I had to tweak this one several times becuase the bass frequency would rattle my speakers. It’s not the kind of bass you hear as the back beat in Hip Hop – just a weird tone from the lower register of the Sax voice on my keyboard. By the way I just added a page called “What I Use” to answer the question for a friend of mine who asked how I play all the parts at one time. I don’t – but you knew that right? Sailing East | I wrote this song for a friend of mine who likes my acoustic leaning mixes. It was really a quick thing that came out better than I thought it would. At first I fooled around with a simple chord progression on my guitar and got the tempo from a setting on my digital piano. On the recorder I first played just a drum track – then added the guitar on a different track. Next I added a kind of angel choir sound – and that’s pretty much it. At first I did not care for the very ending because it sounded to me like I hit a sour note. If you are a musician then you will probably know I did in fact play a single note out of the scale. I have been told by several people who do not play music they just can’t hear it – well you be the judge. Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Share | 9/11/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Second Chances | I worked on this one a good long time –so the finished recording is somewhat dense compared to “Still In The Night” – but I still left most of the tracks I recorded out of the mix. And the title… well If I were writing lyrics to this melody there would be the phrase “Second Chances” in there – mainly because when I hear the chorus I hear those words in my head. I’m not sure it’s a love song or an affirmation of life – but I hope you like it. Play it twice – after all (pretty much) everyone deserves a second chance. I’m not too sure about a fourteen or fifteenth chance – but definitely a second one. Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Track 6 Share | 9/10/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Still In The Night | This is really a great melody. Although I tried to keep this clean with simple instrumentation it ended up getting a little complicated. There is a bass line track in there I played manually and another one generated by the automated accompaniment track in my Technics Digital Piano. When I took out the accompaniment track and replaced it with just the drum track it sounded flat so I put it back two separate base guitar tracks and all. It is intended to be a romantic ballad, and I think it sort of has an anthem feel to it. Hope you enjoy it too! Dotin Dah | I am sure there will be a post detailing this further – but all my personal and professional web sites are in one master directory inside my Rackspace server account. Several weeks ago the sites were hacked by a program called a SQL Injection Trojan – which is a sort of attack dog on the internet searching for weaknesses in websites. At the time there was just such a weakness in the WordPress content management platform, the software I mainly use to build web sites. While that issue has now been corrected I found myself re-building all of my websites about a month ago. Then it happened again two weeks ago – only this time an old forum software platform was the culprit and the results were just as catastrophic. Today I am finishing up the re-launch of the Open Source Music Project site with a cleaner and corrected set of files. Some of the songs here had been originally listed in such a way as to allow iTunes to randomly select which track was the final mix – other tracks were uploaded to the server but for various reasons never posted. Dotin Dah falls into that category. It is up tempo and features a lot of the Sax voice from my keyboard. enjoy! Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Share | 8/10/10 | Free | View In iTunes |

Sunday Morning | From November 2008 this song was at least inspired in part by the song “Mornin’ “by Al Jarreau. It has a sort of atmospheric opening which reminded me of bird song and it breaks into a kind of Jazz Swing arrangement. I am not sure why I never got this posted to the Open Source Music Project site – but I have been listening to this track for a long while. I hope you enjoy it! Superman Sings | Years ago when I lived in Central Florida I would love to stand on Main Street USA in the Magic Kingdom and listen to the Main Street Electrical Parade. I was always fascinated by the way the music was presented. I believe there was a master recording of individual tracks that would be sent to each individual float. So float one would be playing track one, float two would be playing track two and so on. It all blended in the open air. This recording is from October 2008, and I’m not sure why it never got posted. As I rebuild my sites in response to being hacked off the internet I wanted to include it here. The first part of the song – especially the “moog” sound at the begining was inspired by those warm nights in Orlando standing on Main Street. Sweet Meet Re-post | Back in October of 2008 I posted this fun little ditty called Sweet Meet Blues – thanks to some hacker two years later I find myself re-posting the entire Open Source Music Project site files. I noticed I never uploaded the track stubs – the individual music tracks used to mix this song in the first place. Since that is the whole purpose of the Open Source Music Project – I thought that qualified this song for a re-post. I know my music has evolved a lot over the past two years – I think for the better – but I wanted to stay true to the mission of this site… so hear we go again with Sweet Meet Blues! Child of the Universe | The song Child of the Universe goes back a long way, this is a 2009 version I really like. The chord progression has remained the same since I first played it 35 years ago on the streets of Manhattan. Back then I played it on a 12-string Epiphone with my guitar case open and a sign that read “Please Help”. Street Music The original lyrics were really goofy except for the one phrase “Child of the Universe”. I later wrote some very meaningful lyrics and always loved the song. A lot of my later music dips into the same chord progression, but this version tries to capture the original essence of warm summer days in Florida with my six-string in hand. I really don’t sing much anymore, but if I did, this song would always remain. Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Track 6 Share | 9/14/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

34 Fingers | This was one that came very quickly – in fact essentially this is a live performance with not much editing at all. If you want to download the individual tracks below you’ll see what I mean. The main track was created using an arpeggio effect on a string guitar voice on my keyboard – mainly because I had intended to record using my (real) guitar but the battery was gone. So here is 34 fingers.. or should that be here ARE 34 fingers? either way I hope you enjoy listening! Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Share | 8/31/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Dyckman Valley | Pronounced ˆdike-man, the Dyckman Valley is where I grew up in New York City. It is the oldest inhabited part of the island, originally the home of the Weekquaeskeek Indians. They are the ones who “sold” Manhattan Island to Dutch governor Peter Minuit In 1626. Indian Caves in Inwood Hill Park I happened to be mixing the tracks to this song when a documentary called “Super City: New York” was playing on The History Channel. What caught my attention was a shot with an archeologist taken in Inwood Hill Park. He was standing in a place I had been many times as a boy. The neighborhood kids called them “the Indian caves”. Well it turns out they actually were. It was the winter home of the Weekquaeskeek Indians. Really. I don’t know how I connected the musical theme with that vision – but there you have it. New All Along parts I and II | It seems like it gets longer and longer in between uploading new cuts. I don’t know if it is because I am getting too picky or what! I have kind of mixed feelings about this song, called “New All Along part I and II”. It is inspired from the old Bob Dylan song “All Along The Watch Tower” in that it has a similar chord progression. In this song the melody line is different and especially different in the second part. I really like the way this came out except for one thing: No matter how I mixed it the first half sounds so different from the second half that it’s pretty much a different song. After dozens of master mixes I finally gave up and made it obviously two songs – hence the “New All Along parts I and II” title. Pretty clever huh? I would really welcome your mix on this. The original unedited cuts are contained in zip files (links below) because iTunes (or the WordPress plug-in called Podpress) apparently sees posted mp3 files somewhat randomly. In fact I will go back and re-post the earlier stuff in that format to clean up the podcast tracks. As always you are free to use under the Creative Commons License. Translation – use it any way you want for free but give me credit as the song writer and performer. Oh – and I would really appreciate it if you just let me know you used it – send me a link! Long Ago and Far Away | Long Ago and Far Away is the second version of the same song in the podcast series – although they surprisingly have little to do with one another beside the chord progression. Smokey Robinson While watching a 2009 top ten American Idol show the comment was made about Smokey Robinson doing five hundred some-odd different mixes of a song only to use the second track he mixed… well this mix did not happen for me like that. This was the umpteenth time I’ve recorded it, and this was mix eight or nine. Still not perfect – but I really like the way it turned out. As always the individual tracks are available below and I would welcome your comments. Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Track 5 Track 6 Share | 3/31/09 | Free | View In iTunes |

Prairie Dog | Prairie Dog This mix is one of my best I think. The track started from an unusually strong rock drum beat sampled from my synthesizer. After hearing the whole set of tracks it was hard to choose what to focus on. The sax track is really smooth. The two lead guitar tracks are frequently in an interesting harmony – but not necessarily in tune with the sax track all the time. I think you will want to turn this up. Skyline Drive | Over the Christmas Holiday I drive with a friend to New York and enjoyed a weekend in the city. The song “Skyline Drive” was written for that trip, and we played it (really, really loud) on the way up and back. I hope you enjoy it ! I’ve also included each raw track below in case you want to fool around with a remix yourself – or in the event you are just curious as to how one of my recordings goes together. First Kiss | This one is pretty atmospheric in the beginning and a little fusion after that… I just don’t know where this stuff comes from sometimes. I hope you like this – I really do Additional Note: I first posted this in November 2008, and while I have posted a lot of stuff since then I still find myself listening to this track in the car frequently. It is haunting and sweet at the same time … well to me anyway… Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Share | 11/26/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Dubious by Nature | Some time ago I would spend time in a little Irish pub in NorthPort, Long Island, NY. It was a warm and accommodating place where most of the folks I hung out with were from County Cork, Ireland. I’m not sure why that was the case, but it was. I played darts and drank a ‘wee bit of Old Jamie’s and told stories with some of the coolest people I knew. My favorite memory was of playing guitar with the guys that hung out there. That’s actually the main reason I would go. Sometimes a flute would appear, and once someone whipped out an accordion. This song reminds me of some of the music we were playing in NorthPort. I Finished the mix just now – I hope this does not get tedious to listen to… it’s as long a recording as I have ever posted here. But I just wrote this and performed it in the last 90 minutes… it is still echoing sweetly in my ears. This is a straight up live recording. Sweet Meet Blues | Oct 24, 2008 What a great evening I’ve had. After a full week that went well, and at the end of a fun night, I found myself wanting to play. So I did. I was really inspired tonight, and it came out of my fingers as an upward spiral of good spirited blues. I think there is a better mix to be found in here somewhere, but good bad or indifferent here is my “Sweet Meet Blues“ August 7, 2010 My site were all compromised by hackers in July and as I finish the re-build I have reposted this tune with a different mix under the Re-post category. This mix sounds a little too raw and more like a circus than a song… Share | 10/24/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Storm of Love | This is a song I wrote about 20 years ago to and for the Mother of my Daughter. It has words, but I’m not ready to sing quite yet. I was so frustrated earlier this week trying to set up my studio so I can record music I had to buy myself an early birthday present. It’s a digital recorder made by Boss, which in turn is owned by Roland, the same company that makes the synthesizer I use. (It’s a Roland Fantom-S BTW… see more here ) What an unbelievable difference in sound quality. So here is the first recording on the Boss BR1200 created within four hours of opening the box, reading the instructions… O.K. reading a few of the instructions, hooking up the audio cables from the Roland to the piano and from there to the recorder. Plugged in my headset so as not to wake the neighbors – and came up with this version of Storm of Love. 8/8/2010 Note: I consider this a re-post since back in 2008 the individual track files were posted as MP3s . That messed up iTunes and a random work track would be posted to the podcast. Track 1 Track 2 Track 3 Track 4 Share | 10/3/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Friday Playday | I really wanted to record something new tonight, but the little black box which connects the keyboard to laptop has an unacceptable hum. Drat. Well, actually I got lucky. Moving some files around I noticed a set of three tracks which I had not produced yet called Friday Playday. I originally recorded these tracks on March 18, 2007. Sounds impossibly long ago against the backdrop of my current “new” life. I call this a track and not a song because as I poke around inside my existing recordings I notice that I have played a lot of very different variations on surprisingly few themes. In other words I hear the same melodies and counter melodies across many recordings, but they seem pretty different because of the musical arrangement. This is upbeat, all me – playing across three or four different tracks, and (I hope for your sake) not completely unpleasant. Share | 10/2/08 | Free | View In iTunes |

Ticker Tape | Album Cover 1979 Angel Station Here are two versions of a song called “Ticker Tape”. The first mix is a little rough and the second one is more produced – I like them both. We all get our inspiration from somewhere, and for me this song was inspired by a Manfred Mann Album - Angel Station – not a specific song – just the feel of the whole album. Angel Station is unique in featuring a six-note descending theme in most of the songs on the album, woven skillfully into the context of each song in a different way. You can read more about Angel Station here. August 9, 2010 Note: Originally (Sep 27, 2008) I posted both these cuts within the framework of the podPress plugin for WordPress. Either I did not understand how that software worked or it did not work – so iTunes posted a random version of this song. I have since discovered that if I post only one song to the blog for iTunes to see it works a lot better – so if you are interested here is that alternate version of “Tickertape” mentioned above, please feel free to download the cut labeled “Track 1″ below.
